Chapter 78 - The Shattered Sanctuary

The impact of the avalanche felt like the world was splitting in two.

Thousands of tons of snow, ice, and shattered rock smashed through the primary ventilation shafts, blowing out the reinforced steel grates in a blinding whirlwind of freezing powder. The crystal chandeliers tore free from the ceiling, crashing onto the marble floor in explosive sprays of glass. The emergency power grid failed instantly, plunging the rotunda into pitch-black darkness, broken only by the flickering crimson glow of the vault's auxiliary hazard strobes.

"Ryan!" Claire’s voice pierced the chaos.

Ryan dragged himself across the shuddering floor, his hand trailing a smear of blood against the granite. Through the crimson haze of the emergency lights, he saw Arthur convulsing on the dais, paralyzed by the neuro-toxin, while Eleanor desperately tried to haul the massive Firstborn toward the opening of Vault Zero.

"No! No, it wasn't supposed to end like this!" Eleanor was screaming, her Chanel suit torn and covered in gray stone dust, her manicured fingers clawing at the heavy vault door. "The dynasty is eternal! I preserved the blood! I sacrificed everything!"

Ryan reached the Mercedes. Thorne had already swung the heavy armored door open, pulling Ryan inside by the collar of his jacket.

"The main tunnel is blocked!" Thorne shouted over the deafening roar of falling stone. "The blast doors sealed automatically when the avalanche hit the exterior monitoring station! We're trapped in the mountain!"

"There’s an auxiliary drainage flue," Ryan gasped, clutching his cracked ribs, his forehead resting against Claire’s trembling hand. She pulled him close, tears streaking her dust-covered cheeks, baby Leo safe beneath her jacket, whimpering against her chest. "The sanatorium was built over a thermal spring. The overflow flushes into the valley gorge through the lower bedrock."

"Can the Mercedes fit?" Thorne demanded, slamming the transmission into gear.

"No," Ryan coughed, wincing in agony. "Foot path only. We have to run."

Across the rotunda, Eleanor saw them moving.

Abandoning Arthur’s paralyzed body on the dais, she scrambled down the steps like an enraged animal, her eyes wild, brandishing an ivory-handled automatic pistol she had pulled from her dead mercenary’s holster. All the aristocratic elegance, the cold socialite poise, was completely gone. She was the matriarch of a dead empire, stripped of her wealth, her army, and her sanity.

"Give me the boy!" Eleanor shrieked, firing a shot.

The bullet struck the reinforced door pillar of the Mercedes, showering sparks over Thorne’s shoulder.

"You don't get to walk away, Ryan! You don't get to live a normal life while I rot in the cold! You owe this family your blood! You owe *me* your life!"

She raised the weapon again, aiming directly through the shattered rear window toward Claire and the baby.

Claire didn't flinch. She pushed Ryan behind her, shielding Leo with her entire torso, her green eyes burning with an unshakeable, terrifying resolve. "You will never touch him."

Before Eleanor could pull the trigger, the mountain delivered its final judgment.

Directly above the marble dais, the main structural keystone—weakened by the seismic charges and the weight of the shifting glacier—sheared in half. A five-ton slab of granite tore free from the ceiling, crashing down directly between the dais and the vehicle.

The shockwave threw Eleanor backward onto the floor, the gun spinning away into the darkness. The stone slab pulverized the vault interface, severing the hydraulic lines of Vault Zero in an eruption of pressurized oil and sparks.

The heavy steel door of Vault Zero began to slide shut, its mechanical counterweights pulling it closed forever.

Arthur, his black eyes rolling in his paralyzed skull, was dragged into the darkness of the closing vault as the floor collapsed beneath him, disappearing into the subterranean abyss of the mountain he had inhabited for eighty years.

"Arthur!" Eleanor screamed, scrambling on her hands and knees toward the closing steel fissure. "Arthur, take me with you!"

The steel door slammed shut with the finality of a tombstone.

The locks engaged. The hydraulics died. The vault was cold stone once more.

Eleanor fell against the sealed door, sobbing hysterically, her bloody fingers clawing at the impenetrable steel, completely broken.

Thorne grabbed Ryan’s arm, hauling him toward the service maintenance door on the eastern wall of the cavern. "Ryan, move! The entire ceiling is coming down!"

Ryan looked back once through the swirling smoke and falling snow. His mother was sitting in the rubble, muttering nursery rhymes to a sealed steel vault, her empire buried beneath the ice, completely and utterly alone.

"Let's go," Ryan whispered, turning his back on the Vance legacy for the last time. "Get our son out of the dark."
