Chapter 56 - The Mother's Return

The blast doors of the grand foyer groaned as the hydraulic overrides disengaged. The morning mist spilled into the reception hall, cold and clinging, carrying the sharp scent of burning diesel and expensive French perfume.
Victoria Vance walked through the shattered entrance of Vance Manor as though she were arriving at a winter gala.
She wore a charcoal cashmere overcoat with an ermine collar, her silver hair swept into an immaculate chignon. Her face, reconstructed with surgical precision following her escape from Danbury, showed no scars—only the taut, unnerving perfection of limitless wealth. Flanking her were four private security contractors wearing black tactical gear, their suppressed submachine guns held at low-ready.
Behind them, standing on the marble steps where Claire had once fallen, Ryan and Claire stood side by side.
Victoria stopped ten paces away, leaning lightly on an ebony walking cane with an antique ivory handle. She tilted her head, her eyes sweeping over Claire with dripping condescension.
"You really are remarkably durable, aren't you, Claire?" Victoria said, her voice smooth as polished obsidian. "Most women of your pedigree would have taken the twenty-million-dollar non-disclosure settlement and purchased a charming little bakery in Vermont. Yet here you are, haunting my house like an unwelcome stain on the carpet."
"This isn't your house, Victoria," Claire replied, her voice ringing clear through the cavernous foyer. "It stopped being your house the moment you put your hands on me."
Victoria laughed—a dry, brittle sound that echoed off the high ceilings. "My poor, delusional girl. Charles and I built this dynasty before your parents had even paid off their second mortgage. You think because Ryan put a gold ring on your finger that you own the air you breathe here? Look around you. The banks belong to me. The judges belong to me. Even the police cruisers currently sitting at the end of the road are under orders from the State Department to observe and not interfere."
"Where is she, Victoria?" Ryan interrupted, his tone flat, devoid of rage, chilling in its absolute finality.
Victoria turned her predatory gaze to her son. "Who, Ryan? The little abomination your father cooked up in a test tube while I was busy managing the Hong Kong portfolio? I must admit, I was deeply offended when I discovered Charles’s little secret. All those years, he preached about genetic purity, and then he goes and creates an artificial sibling for you out of frozen spare parts."
"She’s dying," Ryan said.
Victoria shrugged, adjusting the cuffs of her coat. "Then she’s saving me the cost of a disposal crew. Now, let’s dispense with the melodrama, Ryan. The Geneva vault requires two living signatures. Since Julian was inconveniently weak, and Charles is rotting in hell, you are going to accompany me to Logan Airport. We will fly to Switzerland. You will place your hand on the biometric terminal. And then... perhaps... I will allow you to return to this mausoleum and raise your bastard in peace."
"And if I refuse?" Ryan asked.
Victoria’s smile vanished. The mask of high-society elegance dissolved, leaving behind the feral, unhinged cruelty that had lived beneath her skin for decades.
"If you refuse," Victoria whispered, signaling to the lead contractor beside her, "my men will sweep this estate room by room. They will find the nursery. And I will personally ensure that Claire watches what happens when an asset of the Vance family is terminated for non-compliance."
Claire didn't flinch. In fact, she took a single, deliberate step forward, her eyes locking onto Victoria's with absolute contempt.
"You really haven't looked at your phone in the last three minutes, have you, Victoria?" Claire asked quietly.
Victoria frowned, a tiny wrinkle of doubt cracking her polished brow.

From the pocket of her cashmere coat, Victoria’s encrypted satellite phone began to vibrate with violent urgency. Once. Twice. Three times.
