Chapter 4 - The Viper's Web

The fluorescent lights of the hospital hallway reflected off the polished linoleum, highlighting the drying smear of blood on Ryan’s collar. He rose slowly from the floor, uncoiling his body with terrifying deliberation. Arthur Sterling, who had spent decades intimidating Wall Street tycoons and federal prosecutors, felt a sudden cold knot tighten in the pit of his stomach.
"Arthur," Ryan said, his voice eerily quiet. "Did you hear what I told my mother before I threw her into the rain?"
Sterling adjusted the lapel of his overcoat, attempting to reclaim his professional dominance. "Ryan, let’s be rational. What happened at the manor was an unfortunate domestic escalation. Margaret was under extreme emotional duress. The family lineage, the pressure of the board, the expectations—"
"She attacked a pregnant woman," Ryan interrupted, taking one slow step forward. "She beat my wife until her placenta detached. My daughter is being cut out of her mother’s body right now at thirty-one weeks, fighting for every single breath."
"The legal narrative does not care about your emotions, Ryan," Sterling replied coldly, tapping his leather briefcase. "What the public will see—what the NYPD already has on record—is a seventy-year-old matriarch brutally assaulted by her six-foot-two athletic son. You kicked her through an entrance door. She has documented fractures. In the eyes of the law, that is aggravated domestic battery and elder abuse."
A dark, humorless smirk played on the corner of Ryan’s lips. "Elder abuse? That’s Margaret’s play?"
"It’s not a play, Ryan. It’s checkmate," Sterling said smoothly, opening his briefcase and pulling out a heavy, cream-colored document bearing the official seal of the Vance Family Trust. "Margaret has already executed Clause 9 of your father’s revocable trust. On grounds of moral turpitude and violent misconduct against the head of the household, your voting proxies in Vance Global have been suspended. Your personal accounts through the family bank have been frozen pending a full psychiatric evaluation. If you want this nightmare to go away, there is only one path forward."
Sterling held out a pen. A Montblanc Meisterstück with a solid gold nib.
"Sign the non-disclosure agreement. Agree to a voluntary sixty-day stay at the Meadows Rehabilitation Clinic in Arizona. Emily will be awarded a quiet, generous settlement of five million dollars, provided she terminates all parental claims to the Vance estate and signs full custody of the child over to Margaret once the infant is discharged."
Ryan looked at the golden pen. Then he looked at the parchment.
"Margaret wants my daughter," Ryan whispered.
"Margaret wants the Vance bloodline raised according to tradition," Sterling corrected without a shred of shame. "A girl raised under Emily’s common background will weaken the family’s social and financial leverage. Under Margaret’s tutelage, the girl will be groomed for a proper dynastic alliance. Sign the papers, Ryan. Before the DA unseals an indictment."
Ryan slowly reached out his right hand. He didn't take the pen. Instead, he wrapped his fingers around Sterling’s pristine silk tie, bunching it into his fist, and violently slammed the sixty-year-old attorney against the wall.
The briefcase tumbled to the floor, spilling legal contracts across the tiles. Sterling gasped, clawing at Ryan’s grip, his face turning an alarmed shade of crimson.
"Listen to me very carefully, Arthur," Ryan growled, his face inches from the attorney’s nose. "You’ve spent thirty years covering up my mother’s crimes. You covered up the maids she beat. You covered up the hush money she paid to the contractors she ruined. You even covered up the forged codicil to my father’s final will."
Sterling’s eyes dilated with pure terror. His breath hitched in his throat. "You... you don't know what you're talking about..."
"I found the safety deposit box in Zurich three months ago, Arthur," Ryan whispered, tightening the chokehold just enough to restrict Sterling’s airflow. "I know my father left Vance Manor and eighty percent of the voting stock directly to *me*, unconditionally. I know Margaret paid you seven million dollars through an offshore shell company in Panama to hide the 2018 amendment. Did you really think I wouldn't check the forensic audit before I announced this pregnancy?"
Sterling began to tremble violently. The arrogant facade of Manhattan’s most untouchable lawyer dissolved into absolute panic.
"Ryan... please... we can negotiate..."
"There is no negotiation," Ryan said, releasing the tie with a sudden shove that left Sterling sliding down the wall. "Pick up your trash."
Sterling scrambled on his knees, desperately scooping up the scattered legal documents with trembling fingers.
"Go back to Lenox Hill," Ryan commanded, looking down at the groveling lawyer with utter disgust. "Tell Margaret that her trust clause is toilet paper. Tell her that the DA she thinks she owns is already being investigated by the Southern District. And tell her that if she ever mentions my daughter’s name again, I will release the Zurich files to the Wall Street Journal, the SEC, and the FBI simultaneously."
Before Sterling could stammer a reply, the red light above OR 3 flickered and turned off.
The heavy surgical doors swung open.
May you like
Ryan completely forgot Sterling’s existence. He spun around, his heart pounding in his throat like a war drum, as Dr. David Harrison walked out, pulling his bloody surgical mask down to his chin.
