Chapter 13 - Blood in the Water

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel hummed with the high-stakes murmur of New York’s ultra-wealthy.

It was the annual Vance Global Holdings Shareholder Gala—the crowning event of the corporate calendar. For twenty years, Margaret Vance had presided over this room like a queen holding court. Tonight, Ryan had intended to use this platform to announce a historic philanthropic initiative in Emily’s name, cementing their vision of a new, ethical future for the multi-billion-dollar conglomerate.

Instead, the atmosphere inside the ballroom felt like an abattoir.

Rumors had leaked to Bloomberg and the *Wall Street Journal* at dawn. The headlines were savage: *VANCE GLOBAL IN CRISIS: SECRET HEIR EMERGES WITH CONTROLLING TRUST; MARGARET VANCE BACKS CHALLENGER FROM PRISON.*

Ryan stood near the stage, dressed in a sharp black tuxedo, but the dark circles under his eyes betrayed forty-eight hours without sleep. Beside him, Emily looked radiant in an emerald-green gown, her chin lifted high, though Ryan could feel the tension vibrating through her fingers where she held his hand.

"They're circling like sharks, Ryan," Emily murmured under her breath, watching several board members huddled together near the bar, casting anxious, guarded glances in their direction.

"Let them circle," Ryan muttered through clenched teeth. "Marcus has filed three counter-motions. Julian cannot vote those shares until probate verifies his DNA against Arthur’s archived medical samples. We hold the operational veto."

"And if Arthur’s samples match?" Emily asked, her voice tight with terror.

Ryan didn't answer. Because deep down, looking at Julian’s face, Ryan knew the truth that his lawyers were desperately trying to stall: Arthur Vance had strayed. Arthur was Julian’s father.

Suddenly, the heavy bronze doors at the back of the ballroom swung wide open.

A hush swept through the five hundred guests, cutting off conversations mid-sentence like a blade through silk. Heads turned in unison.

Julian Sterling-Vance walked into the room.

He did not come alone. Walking at his side was Senator Jonathan Hayes—Arthur Vance’s oldest political ally—and, behind them, two federal marshals holding legal briefcases. Julian wore a midnight-blue tuxedo, his lapel adorned with a vintage gold signet ring pinned as a brooch. Ryan recognized that ring instantly; it was the Vance family crest, an heirloom Arthur had allegedly lost in Geneva a decade ago.

Julian didn't look at the crowd. His eyes locked straight onto Ryan.

With slow, theatrical confidence, Julian walked up the center aisle. Whispers exploded across the ballroom like wildfire. Camera flashes erupted from the press gallery as reporters pushed past the velvet ropes.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Julian’s voice rang out, clear and commanding, without needing a microphone. "I apologize for the interruption, but as Arthur Vance’s eldest son, I believe in transparency."

Ryan stepped forward, positioning himself directly between Julian and Emily. "This is a private corporate gala, Julian. You are not on the guest list. Escort yourself out before I have hotel security remove you."

Julian chuckled softly, reaching into his jacket. "Hotel security can't override a federal bench warrant, Ryan."

Julian turned to the lead federal marshal, who stepped forward and presented an official document stamped with the seal of the Southern District of New York.

"Mr. Ryan Vance," the marshal announced formally, his voice echoing across the silent ballroom. "As of 4:00 PM today, Judge Alistair Vance—your father's first cousin—has granted an emergency temporary restraining order and asset freeze. Pursuant to the primogeniture codicil and preliminary DNA confirmation filed under seal, Julian Arthur Vance has been designated interim executor of the Vance Controlling Trust."

The room erupted into gasps. Board members spilled their champagne.

Julian stepped onto the lower riser of the stage, leaning in until his breath grazed Ryan’s ear.

"Check your phone, brother," Julian murmured with venomous satisfaction. "Thirty seconds ago, the board’s audit committee received a dossier detailing twelve offshore wire transfers originating from your personal account, funneled to an untraceable shell corporation in Belize. The same shell corporation that bribed the state prison guards to place Margaret in solitary confinement."

Ryan’s eyes widened with fury. "That’s an outright lie! I never bribed anyone!"

"The forensic accounting trail says you did," Julian sneered, pulling out his own phone and showing the screen to Ryan. "Fabricated? Maybe. But by midnight, the SEC will suspend your trading privileges. Tomorrow morning at nine o’clock, the board will convene an emergency vote of no confidence. You won't be CEO by noon."

Julian turned toward Emily, his cold gaze raking over her with open malice.

"I told you, Emily," Julian said with a sickening smile. "Margaret sends her warmest regards. She told me to make sure you remember how it feels when everything you love gets crushed beneath your feet."

Emily stepped forward, not backing down an inch, her eyes blazing with raw fire. "Margaret is a cowardly monster who tried to murder an unborn child, Julian. And if you think you can intimidate me with forged papers and cheap boardroom tricks, you have severely underestimated the woman who survived her."

Julian’s smile tightened into a cruel sneer. "We’ll see how brave you are tomorrow, little sister-in-law. When the locks are changed on your doors."
