Chapter 16 - The Visit to Purgatory

"NO!" Emily screamed, the sound tearing from her throat like an animal caught in a trap. She dropped to her knees on the marble floor of the vault, clawing at Ryan’s legs. "RYAN! GRACE! THEY'RE IN THE PENTHOUSE!"

Ryan didn't panic. The moment the threat materialized, a chilling, absolute coldness washed over his mind. He hit speed-dial on his private encrypted line.

"Bravo Team Leader," a voice answered instantly.

"Code Black at the safehouse," Ryan ordered, his voice flat, devoid of emotion. "Neutralize the intruder in the nursery. Secure my daughter. Do not call the police yet. Keep the intruder alive. I want to know who hired her."

"Understood, Mr. Vance. Breaching in ten seconds."

Through Emily’s phone screen, the video feed captured the bedroom door being kicked off its hinges. Two tactical operatives in black gear swarmed the nursery with suppressed rifles. The woman in the nurse’s uniform barely had time to turn before she was tackled to the carpet, the syringe flying across the room and shattering against the wall.

Grace let out a loud, frightened cry as an operative gently scooped her up into his armored arms.

Emily collapsed against Ryan, sobbing in violent, ragged gasps. "She's safe... oh God, she's safe..."

"She's safe, my love," Ryan whispered, kissing her forehead fiercely. "They will never touch our daughter. Never."

Ryan stood up, his jaw set like iron. He looked at the leather journal, the Johns Hopkins DNA test, and the clock on the wall. It was 7:15 AM.

"Marcus," Ryan said, turning to the attorney. "Take Emily and the Boston documents directly to the boardroom at Vance Global. Hold the meeting until 9:30 AM. Do whatever you have to do—cite procedural objections, challenge the quorum, burn the clock."

Emily looked up, wiping the tears from her face. "Where are you going, Ryan?"

"I have one stop to make," Ryan replied, his eyes dark with murderous resolve. "The serpent didn't plan this from a boardroom. She planned it from a cage."

Thirty minutes later, Ryan’s helicopter touched down on the private landing pad near the maximum-security perimeter of Bedford Hills Correctional Facility.

Because Ryan held high-level executive clearance and had funded the state prison’s rehabilitation wing, the warden granted his emergency visitation request without delay.

Ryan sat in the cold, windowless concrete interrogation room. The heavy steel door opened, accompanied by the metallic rattle of chains.

Margaret Vance walked in.

She had changed. Her once-flawless platinum hair was gray and unkempt, pulled back in a severe, coarse ponytail. Her aristocratic posture was warped by the humiliation of prison life, and her face was lined with deep, bitter grooves. Yet, when her eyes locked onto Ryan, that same venomous, aristocratic arrogance flared behind her pupils.

"Ryan," Margaret said, her voice raspy, sitting across the metal table while the guard shackled her waist to the floor ring. "Did you come to beg? Or did you come to watch Julian sign the eviction notice for your pathetic little wife?"

Ryan didn't raise his voice. He leaned across the table, his hands flat on the cold steel.

"Julian is your son, Margaret," Ryan said calmly.

Margaret’s smug expression froze. A microscopic twitch pulled at the corner of her thin lip.

"I have Arthur’s journal," Ryan continued, each word delivered like a scalpel slice. "I have the Johns Hopkins DNA report from 2012. Arthur knew Julian wasn't his. He knew you paid Claire Laurent to act as a surrogate front to torture him with manufactured guilt. You gave birth to Julian when you were nineteen in a back-alley clinic in Paris, abandoned him, and then pulled him out of the sewer to use him as an attack dog against your own legitimate family."

Margaret’s breathing turned shallow. The illusion of her maternal superiority began to crack, exposing the rancid malice underneath.

"Arthur was a weak, pathetic fool!" Margaret spat, leaning forward, her chains clinking against the table. "He built an empire with my family’s seed capital! He thought he could replace me? He thought you could replace me with that lower-class, gold-digging whore Emily?!"

"Julian tried to murder Grace an hour ago," Ryan said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, deadly hush. "He sent an assassin into my daughter’s nursery with potassium chloride."

Margaret didn't blink. A horrifying, triumphant grin spread across her ruined face. "A girl. A useless, worthless girl. Julian is my blood. Real blood. He has my ambition. He will sit on that throne, Ryan, and you will watch Vance Manor burn to the ground, just like you burned my life!"

Ryan slowly reached into his pocket and pulled out a digital audio recorder. The red recording light was glowing steadily.

"Thank you, Mother," Ryan said quietly, tapping the recorder against the metal table. "That was a direct confession of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, extortion, and interstate corporate fraud."

Margaret’s grin instantly vanished. Her eyes widened in sheer, paralyzing panic.

"The federal marshals are outside, Margaret," Ryan said, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "You won't be spending the rest of your life in a state facility with television privileges. By noon, you will be indicted under the federal RICO statute. You will spend the rest of your miserable life in ADX Florence, in a subterranean concrete box, twenty-three hours a day in total darkness."

Margaret lunged across the table, her fingernails clawing at the air, screaming like a banshee as the chains jerked her back violently.

"RYAN! YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO ME! I AM YOUR MOTHER! I GAVE YOU LIFE!"

May you like

Ryan walked to the heavy steel door, knocked twice for the guard, and didn't look back as Margaret’s hysterical screams echoed down the stone corridor.
