Chapter 37 - The Ghost of Whitehall

Ryan stepped forward and picked up the leather-bound journal from the cold concrete.

The handwriting was dated August 14, 1988—the summer before Charles Vance had returned to the United States to marry Margaret Delacroix. The ink was faded, but the sharp, decisive strokes of Charles’s fountain pen were unmistakable.

Ryan read the lines aloud, his voice steady, echoing off the stacks of gold bullion:

*“To whichever son opens this chamber: If you stand here together, then my design has failed, for a house divided against itself cannot stand. But if you stand here alone, having eliminated each other through greed, then you have inherited exactly what you deserve—nothing.”*

Ryan turned the page. Pasted inside was an official birth certificate issued by the General Register Office in London, bearing the seal of Her Majesty’s Government, alongside an official military intelligence dossier stamped with the classification mark of the British Secret Intelligence Service (MI6).

Ryan looked up at Julian, whose trembling hands were now clutching the edge of the granite pedestal.

“You’re not Charles Vance’s biological son, are you?” Ryan said softly.

The silence inside the vault was absolute, broken only by the low hum of the ventilation system.

“He... he told me I was his firstborn,” Julian whispered, his face ghastly pale in the tactical light. “He came to the school in Scotland every summer. He brought me watches. He brought me my first rifle. He signed the tuition checks!”

“Read the dossier, Julian,” Ryan said, holding the paper out toward him. “Charles didn't father you with an English lord’s daughter. You were the son of Major Alistair Sterling—Charles’s personal security chief during the London maritime contracts in the late eighties. Alistair died saving my father’s life when a car bomb detonated outside the Vance shipping offices on Leadenhall Street.”

Julian stepped backward until his shoulders slammed against a rack of gold bullion. “Shut up... shut up!”

“Father didn't raise you as an heir,” Ryan continued, the tragic cruelty of his father’s mind laying bare before him. “He felt indebted to your father for saving his life. But Charles Vance couldn't just adopt an orphan and show gratitude like a normal human being. Charles was a sociopath. He took an eight-year-old boy, put him in military contractor academies, and manipulated him into believing he was a secret prince—a loyal attack dog conditioned to hate Margaret and protect the Vance empire from the outside.”

“I share his blood!” Julian roared, ripping open his shirt collar, showing the identical jawline and aristocratic features that had terrified Ryan from the photograph. “Look at me! Look at my face! I am a Vance!”

“You had plastic surgery, Julian,” Ryan said, pointing to the medical annex attached to the MI6 file. “In 2004, at a private clinic in Geneva. Charles Vance paid eighty thousand Swiss francs to an elite facial reconstructive surgeon to alter your jaw and brow structure to match his own. He created a double. A phantom heir to keep Margaret looking over her shoulder for thirty years while he consolidated his domestic wealth.”

Julian stared at his own scarred hands, his breathing ragged, shallow, hysterical.

Thirty years of combat, thirty years of slaughter in the deserts of the Middle East and the ports of Africa, thirty years of burning with hatred for the legitimate family living in the grand American manor—all of it built upon the psychotic vanity of an American billionaire who had treated him like an expendable theatrical prop.

“And the vault?” Julian whispered, his voice cracking like dry glass as he looked around at the towering walls of gold and bearer bonds. “The digital hard drive... the offshore accounts...”

Ryan picked up the digital hard drive from the blue box. He pressed the display button.

The screen flickered to life. A single prompt appeared, requiring an administrative security passphrase.

Beneath the prompt was an automated legal codicil executed through the High Court of London upon the death of Charles Vance:

*“All bearer assets, sovereign gold reserves, and secondary debt instruments housed within the Bedford Hills repository are the sole and exclusive property of the biological offspring of Charles Vance and Margaret Delacroix Vance. In the event of a non-biological claimant attempting execution of the trust, all assets are permanently transferred to the United States Treasury under the foreign sovereign whistleblower provisions.”*

Julian fell to his knees on the concrete floor.

The terrifying, untouchable warlord of Aegis Trident was gone. In his place sat a broken, hollowed-out boy whose entire identity had just been incinerated in the span of five minutes.

From the doorway of the vault, the sound of slow, mocking applause echoed through the subterranean gloom.

Ryan spun around.

Standing in the vault entrance, flanked by four Aegis Trident operatives whose rifles were now leveled directly at Julian’s head, was not Thorne.

May you like

It was Margaret Vance.
