Chapter 22 - Bloodline of Versailles

The interrogation lights of the FBI Field Office in lower Manhattan hummed with a low, agonizing vibration that felt like a drill piercing Ryan Vance’s temples.
Across the metal table sat Special Agent Marcus Thorne, a man whose career had been built on taking down corporate titans who believed their billions placed them above federal law. Thorne threw a thick manila folder onto the steel surface, the slap echoing off the soundproofed walls.
“Ten minutes, Ryan,” Thorne said, leaning forward on his knuckles, his tie loosened, eyes bloodshot. “That’s how long you have before the United States Attorney stands in front of thirty news cameras and announces your indictment for conspiracy to murder federal marshals, aiding an escape, and treasonous handling of classified munitions.”
Ryan didn't flinch. He sat in his tailored charcoal suit, handcuffs shackling his wrists to the heavy iron bolt welded into the center of the table. Despite the bruising fatigue shadowing his eyes, his posture was immaculate, radiating the cold, aristocratic authority that had made him feared across Wall Street.
“You’re barking at the wrong tree, Thorne,” Ryan said calmly, his tone as sharp as surgical steel. “If I wanted my mother dead, she wouldn't have survived the ride to her initial arraignment. I spent twenty-four million dollars building the digital evidence that put Margaret in federal custody. Why would I dismantle my own victory?”
“Because Julian died in prison last week, and you knew Margaret’s appeal was gaining traction with the Second Circuit!” Thorne snapped, slamming a color photograph down on the table.
It was an aerial shot of Route 9. The federal transport van was nothing more than a blackened, twisted skeleton of metal resting in a crater of melted asphalt. Three body bags lay on the grass nearby.
“Julian’s death wasn’t an accident,” Ryan countered, his eyes narrowing as he stared at the carnage in the photograph. “Julian was poisoned with ricin while under twenty-four-hour suicide watch in a maximum-security ward. You told the press it was heart failure to avoid panic, but I have the private toxicology report Julian’s cellmate smuggled out. Julian was silenced because he was ready to testify about an offshore trust named *La Rose Blanche*.”
Thorne froze. His jaw hardened, his eyes darting toward the two-way mirror on the wall behind Ryan. “Where did you hear that name?”
“My mother didn't work alone,” Ryan said, leaning in as far as the steel chain permitted. “Twenty-six years ago, before my father married Margaret, she spent eighteen months living in Paris under an assumed identity—Margaret Delacroix. The official family history says she was studying art restoration at the Louvre. But that’s a lie my father paid ten million dollars to manufacture.”
Ryan’s voice dropped an octave, resonating with a dark certainty. “Margaret was pregnant. She gave birth to a daughter in a private clinic in Neuilly-sur-Seine. She abandoned the child with a French banking dynasty known for laundering black-market antiquities—the Moreau family. That daughter’s name is Genevieve.”
Thorne pulled out a chair, scraping the legs aggressively against the floor, and sat down. He pulled a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, stared at the no-smoking sign on the wall, and threw them down in frustration.
“Let’s say I entertain this ghost sister theory,” Thorne said coldly. “Who signed the clearance forms for the C-4 explosives that came through your Newark shipping hub, Ryan? The signature is biometric. It matched your thumbprint and your private twenty-eight-character cryptographic key. No one hacks that system. Not even the NSA.”
“Someone didn't hack it,” Ryan whispered, a sudden, horrifying realization blooming in his chest like an ink stain on silk. “Someone didn't need to.”
He thought back to the nursery. To the open French doors. To the smell that had lingered in the room—a faint, unmistakable trace of *Chypre 21*, a bespoke perfume created exclusively by a boutique perfumer in Paris.
It was the exact same fragrance his wife Emily had received as an anonymous baby shower gift three weeks ago from an alleged alumni association in Boston. Emily had worn it only once, complaining that it gave her a mild headache.
“Emily…” Ryan gasped aloud, the color instantly draining from his face.
“What about your wife?” Thorne demanded, instantly alert.
“The biometric key for my shipping terminal isn't kept on a server,” Ryan said, his chest heaving as he fought against the handcuffs, rattling the iron link against the table. “It’s embedded in a cryptographic titanium ring I gave to Emily for our anniversary. She wears it on her right ring finger. She never takes it off!”
Before Thorne could respond, the heavy steel door of the interrogation room flew open. A junior agent stood in the doorway, his face pale and drenched in sweat, clutching an urgent red priority dispatch.
“Agent Thorne,” the junior agent stammered, casting a terrified glance at Ryan. “You need to see this right now. It’s the safe house where Vance’s wife and daughter were transferred under US Marshals protection an hour ago.”
Ryan stood up so violently that the heavy metal table lifted two inches off the floor before crashing down. “What happened to Emily? *Where are my wife and daughter?!*”
The junior agent swallowed hard, his hands shaking as he held out an iPad. “The US Marshals convoy at the safe house in Westchester… they didn't make it inside. The marshals were found incapacitated by an airborne neurotoxin pumped through the vehicle’s ventilation system. Mrs. Vance and the baby are gone.”
Ryan’s vision narrowed to a pinprick of crimson fury.
“There was a message left on the dashboard of the marshals’ SUV,” the young agent whispered, his voice cracking. “Drawn on the windshield with lipstick.”
Thorne grabbed the iPad, his eyes widening in pure disbelief.
Displayed on the screen was a photograph of the shattered SUV windshield. Written across the glass in blood-red lipstick was a single sentence:
May you like
