Chapter 17 - The Hostile Takeover

The board room on the 50th floor of the Vance Global Tower was suffocating.
Twenty-four board members, representing the most powerful financial institutions in North America, sat around the fifty-foot glass conference table. At the head of the table sat Julian Sterling-Vance, flanked by three high-priced corporate defense attorneys and Senator Jonathan Hayes.
Julian checked his gold watch. It was 9:28 AM.
"Marcus," Julian said, his voice dripping with condescending pity. "You have stalled this meeting for twenty-eight minutes. Your motion to delay has expired. Where is Ryan? Did he run away to Europe with his tail between his legs?"
Senator Hayes cleared his throat. "Marcus, as senior board member, I move that we proceed with the vote of no confidence against Ryan Vance, pursuant to Section 4 of the bylaws regarding executive misconduct."
"Seconded," three board members echoed in unison.
Marcus stood at the far end of the table, his phone buzzing repeatedly in his palm. "Mr. Chairman, the trust shares are subject to an active dispute of heirship. If you vote those shares without biological certification, this board exposes itself to billions in personal liability!"
"The certification was filed yesterday by Judge Vance," Julian retorted sharply, slamming his palm against the glass table. "The time for debate is over. All in favor of removing Ryan Vance as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, raise your hands."
Eighteen of the twenty-four board members began lifting their hands.
Julian smiled—a wide, triumphant grin of absolute victory. "The motion passes. As interim executor, I hereby appoint myself—"
The heavy double doors of the boardroom flew open with a thunderous crash.
Ryan Vance walked into the room.
He wasn't wearing a tuxedo or a suit. He wore a dark wool coat, his hair windblown, his boots leaving damp prints on the plush designer carpet. But behind him walked three men who froze the blood of every billionaire in the room:
Special Agent David Vance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, two armed agents carrying evidence boxes, and Emily Vance—holding the leather-bound journal and a stack of certified legal briefs.
Julian’s smirk vanished. He shot to his feet. "What is the meaning of this?! Security! Have these trespassers removed!"
"Sit down, Julian," Ryan commanded, his voice cutting through the room with the force of an artillery shell.
The two private security guards at the door took one look at the FBI badges and stepped back, their hands raised.
Ryan walked down the center of the boardroom, his gaze fixed on Julian. "You called for a vote of no confidence based on primogeniture rights. But you forgot one tiny detail."
Ryan reached into his coat, pulled out the Johns Hopkins genetic report, and slammed it down onto the glass table directly in front of Senator Hayes.
"That document is a certified DNA test conducted on Arthur Vance’s tissue samples against Julian Laurent," Ryan announced to the room. "Arthur Vance is NOT Julian’s father."
Whispers exploded among the board members. Julian’s face flushed a deep, violent crimson.
"That's a lie!" Julian roared. "That document is a fake! Arthur signed the codicil! Arthur acknowledged me!"
"Arthur was blackmailed by Margaret," Emily spoke up, her voice ringing clear, powerful, and utterly fearless across the boardroom. "Because Julian isn't Arthur’s illegitimate child. Julian is Margaret Vance’s child from an affair she had before she married Arthur. Julian has zero genetic connection to the Vance family lineage!"
Emily walked forward and dropped the digital audio recorder onto the table, pressing play.
Margaret’s raspy, hateful voice filled the executive suite:
*Julian is my blood... A useless, worthless girl... He will sit on that throne, Ryan, and you will watch Vance Manor burn to the ground...*
The board members stared at Julian in absolute disgust. Several of them quickly lowered their hands, leaning back in their leather chairs as if Julian were contaminated with radioactive waste.
Senator Hayes looked at the DNA test, then looked at Julian, his face turning pale. "Julian... you told me Arthur gave you that signet ring personally."
"He did!" Julian snarled, his composure completely disintegrating. "This is a setup! Ryan fabricated the audio! You can't believe this garbage!"
Special Agent David Vance stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.
"Julian Laurent," the agent stated formally. "You are under arrest for interstate wire fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and corporate extortion. At 7:45 AM, FBI tactical units raided your safehouse in Jersey City. We recovered the communication logs between your burner phone and the woman who infiltrated Ryan Vance’s residence with a lethal dose of potassium chloride."
Julian’s eyes darted frantically around the room. He looked at the board members who had supported him; they looked away, staring at the floor. He looked at Senator Hayes, who pushed his chair back, distancing himself.

Julian was completely, irrevocably alone.
