Chapter 47 - The Neuro-Toxin Protocol

By dawn, the fog over Bar Harbor, Maine, had turned the color of bruised pewter. The private medical hangar belonging to the Vance estate was locked down under Class-One executive protocol: private security cordons around the perimeter, heavy blast gates closed, and a mobile intensive care unit flown in from Massachusetts General Hospital operating under strict non-disclosure orders.
Inside the glass-walled trauma suite, CJ lay hooked to a multi-channel dialysis rig, slowly filtering the synthetic neuro-preservatives from his bloodstream. His color was returning, the gray undertone of twenty years of stasis giving way to the natural warmth of Sinclair youth.
Dr. Aris Thorne—Thorne’s estranged younger brother and a former military toxicologist—pulled off his latex gloves, tossing them into the biohazard bin with a disgusted snap.
“The boy was lucky,” Aris said, leaning against the counter beside Ryan and Emily. “The stasis cocktail Charles used was based on an experimental cryogenic suspension formula developed by the Swiss military in the nineties. It halts cellular decay, but it requires periodic administration of a specialized enzyme to keep the neural synapses from calcifying.”
“How often?” Emily asked, watching CJ through the glass as the boy slept peacefully under mild sedation.
“Every six months,” Aris answered. “And the final batch of that enzyme was loaded into the station’s automated dispenser six weeks ago. If you hadn't pulled him out today, Ryan, within two weeks the platform’s reserves would have run dry. He wouldn't have woken up. His brain would have suffered irreversible ischemic death.”
Ryan leaned his forehead against the cold glass. The level of premeditated cruelty his father had engineered made his stomach churn. Charles hadn't just created an heir; he had created a human time-capsule with a built-in expiration date, entirely dependent on Charles’s personal intervention to stay alive.
“Where is Helena now?” Ryan asked, turning back to Thorne, who had just entered the hangar after debriefing the security perimeter.
“Marcus’s marshals tracked her convoy to a private air strip outside Bangor,” Thorne said, his jaw rigid. “She didn't cross into Canada. Pendelton managed to get a radio distress call off the rig before our Sikorsky’s jamming systems fully deployed. She knows Arthur failed. She knows the boy is alive.”
“Then why didn't she run?” Emily asked, her voice tight with immediate dread. “If she knows CJ is with us, she knows the Sinclair trust is completely out of her reach. Her legal standing is destroyed.”
“Because she’s not running from the Sinclair trust, Emily,” Thorne replied, his eyes dark. “She’s running toward the only collateral that can force Ryan to give CJ back.”
Ryan’s blood ran ice-cold. His heart stopped dead in his chest.
“The manor,” Ryan breathed. “Leo.”

“Miller called five minutes ago,” Thorne said, his voice dropping into a combat clip. “An unmarked security convoy flying counterfeit federal marshal plates just breached the southern gate of Vance Manor. They didn't come to negotiate. They’ve laid an assault ring around the nursery wing.”
