Chapter 12 - The Whispering Gallery

The panic that gripped Emily was not loud; it was an icy, suffocating paralysis.

She stood in the nursery on the second floor of Vance Manor, clutching Grace so tightly against her chest that the little girl let out a soft, confused whimper. Downstairs, the estate was crawling with elite private security contractors. Ryan had tripled the perimeter detail within two hours of that phone call, hiring former Secret Service agents to sweep every inch of the twelve-acre property.

"Emily, sweetheart, you need to let me take her," Ryan said gently, his hands resting on Emily’s trembling shoulders.

Emily spun around, her eyes wide, haunted by the specter of the trauma she had barely survived over a year ago. "He knows what she looks like, Ryan. He said her name. How could he know Grace was wearing red shoes today unless someone was watching us from inside the property lines?"

"Nobody is inside," Ryan promised, though the strain in his voice betrayed his own terror. "We swept the tree line. We’re upgrading the optical feeds. Julian Vance is trying to play psychological warfare. He wants us scared. He wants us to make a mistake."

"He isn't just Julian Vance," Emily whispered, her voice breaking. "He's Margaret’s final bullet. She's sitting in a concrete cage, Ryan! She is locked behind three steel security checkpoints, wearing an orange jumpsuit, and she still found a way to reach into this nursery!"

Ryan pulled Emily into his arms, wrapping his body around both her and Grace. He buried his face in Emily’s hair, smelling the sweet lavender shampoo that had always grounded him. "I will tear this world apart before I let anyone touch either of you. Do you hear me? I buried my mother’s reign, and I will bury him too."

Downstairs, the front doorbell chimed. It wasn't the delivery buzzer or the estate intercom. It was the antique bronze bell that only sounded when someone stood at the front portico.

Ryan’s grip tightened. He kissed Emily’s forehead. "Stay here. Lock the heavy deadbolt. Do not open this door for anyone except me."

"Ryan, don't go down there alone," she pleaded, tears spilling over her lashes.

"Frank and Miller are with me," Ryan said, nodding toward the two armed security guards standing in the hallway. "Lock it, Emily."

Emily closed the reinforced oak door, and the metallic click of the deadbolt echoed like a gunshot.

Ryan descended the sweeping marble staircase, his stride deliberate, every nerve in his body taut. Through the decorative sidelights of the front double doors, he saw a solitary figure standing in the twilight.

The man was not an unhinged rogue or a back-alley thug. He wore a bespoke charcoal-gray double-breasted suit that screamed Savile Row. He stood with his hands casually resting in his pockets, his posture immaculate.

Ryan nodded to Frank, who stepped forward and pulled the heavy door open, keeping his hand rested firmly against the concealed holster beneath his suit jacket.

The man on the porch turned around.

Ryan froze.

The resemblance was horrifying. Julian possessed Arthur Vance’s piercing steel-blue eyes, the sharp aquiline nose, and the faint, cynical smirk that Ryan remembered from the boardrooms of his childhood. But while Arthur had carried himself with a cold, corporate dignity, Julian possessed an unsettling, predatory aura. He looked thirty-four, lean and dangerous, like a wolf that had spent thirty years starving outside the palace gates while the legitimate prince dined on silver platters.

"Ryan," Julian said, his voice smooth as silk. "You really shouldn't keep family waiting in the cold."

"You have ten seconds to get off my property before my security team detains you for trespassing," Ryan said, his tone lethal.

Julian didn't flinch. Instead, he pulled a crisp, folded white envelope from his inner breast pocket and held it out between two manicured fingers.

"You might want to read this before you call the sheriff, little brother," Julian remarked, his smirk widening. "That's an injunction issued by the New York State Supreme Court, Commercial Division. As the newly certified majority trustee of the Arthur Vance Legacy Trust, I have initiated an emergency freeze on Vance Manor’s residential operating fund. By court order, this property is now under joint conservatorship pending the bloodline validation hearing next Monday."

Ryan didn't take the envelope. "Arthur Vance had one legal son. Any document Margaret produced from prison is tainted by fraud, forgery, and coercion. You’re playing with fire, Julian. I have fifty top-tier litigators in Manhattan who will dismantle you by sunrise."

Julian took a single step forward, bringing his face inches from Ryan’s. Up close, Ryan could see a faint, jagged scar running beneath Julian’s left ear down into his collar—a relic of a life far rougher than the penthouses of Manhattan.

"Margaret didn't forge anything, Ryan," Julian whispered, his breath carrying the faint scent of clove and mint. "Our father visited me three weeks before he had that massive stroke. He sat in my dingy apartment in Chicago, wept like a broken child, and begged for my forgiveness. He gave me his signet ring. He gave me his private journals. And he told me that you were too weak, too soft, too distracted by common women to carry the Vance name into the next century."

Julian tilted his head, his cold eyes flicking toward the second-floor nursery window.

May you like

"I was raised in the gutter while you slept on Egyptian cotton," Julian said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "You took everything that was supposed to be mine. Now, I’m taking the company. I’m taking this house. And when I’m done, I’m going to make sure your little family leaves this estate with nothing but the clothes on their backs."
