Chapter 75 - The Firstborn’s Covenant

Ryan stepped out of the Mercedes, his boots clicking hard against the polished granite floor. He did not smile. His posture was that of a man walking toward a firing squad, unyielding and lethal. Claire remained by the door of the vehicle, Thorne standing shoulder-to-shoulder with her, his hand resting conspicuously inside his heavy wool coat.

"You look well for a federal fugitive, Mother," Ryan said, stopping ten paces from the dais. "I suppose bribing the Department of Justice cost more than the jewelry you stole from Vance Manor."

Eleanor laughed softly, a delicate, tinkling sound that sent shivers through the cavern. "The Department of Justice? Please, darling. The United States government is an infant playing in a sandbox compared to the people who carved this vault before your country even existed. The Americans thought they were punishing me. They were merely providing me with an escort to the Swiss border."

Her cold blue eyes drifted past Ryan, locking onto Claire and the bundle in her arms. A predatory gleam ignited behind her gaze. "And you brought the boy. My grandson. The true heir to the Saxe bloodline."

"He isn't your heir," Claire’s voice cut through the rotunda like a bullwhip. "He’s my son. And the only thing he inherits from you is the burden of knowing his grandmother is a sociopath."

Eleanor’s smile thinned, her lips pressing into a cruel, bloodless line. "Still the loud, common little schoolteacher from Queens. Charles always had pathetic taste in women, and it seems you inherited his weakness, Ryan. You thought you achieved something noble by liquidating forty-eight billion dollars, didn't you? Giving it to charity? To hospitals?" Eleanor stepped down from the marble dais, her diamond heels clicking rhythmically. "You fool. That money was pocket change. It was the interest on the debt Charles owed to this mountain."

"What is in the vault, Eleanor?" Ryan asked, holding up Key 00. "Why send your death squad to my home in Maine? Why threaten my child?"

"Because your father was an imposter," Eleanor said, stopping five feet from Ryan. Her eyes were wide, burning with an ancient, fanatical fervor. "Charles was the second son. Julian was the third. But my father... my father had an elder son. Julian and Charles’s older brother. The firstborn."

Ryan frowned, his mind racing through decades of family records. "Charles had no older brother. The Vance lineage in Boston began with grandfather Arthur and two sons."

"Because Arthur buried the firstborn," Eleanor whispered, leaning closer, the scent of expensive French lilies and cold iron wafting from her skin. "Arthur had a boy before Charles. A boy born with a genetic anomaly—an immune system that did not decay, blood that neutralized cellular aging. Arthur was terrified of him. The American medical establishment would have dissected him. So Arthur brought him here, to the sanatorium, and locked him inside Vault Zero."

Ryan felt the breath leave his lungs. "You're lying. You're trying to justify your madness."

"Why do you think Charles spent thirty years and billions of dollars running cryo-labs on cargo ships in international waters?" Eleanor spat, her composure cracking into venomous triumph. "You thought he was trying to clone himself? He was trying to replicate the Firstborn’s genetic sequence! He spent forty years trying to open this door, but the vault’s biological lock requires two things: the iron key, and the direct uncorrupted genetic match of the Vance line’s youngest male."

Eleanor pointed a manicured finger directly at baby Leo.

"Charles couldn't open it. Julian couldn't open it. You couldn't open it, Ryan, because your blood was tainted by the neuro-toxins Charles fed you during your childhood. But that child... that baby is genetically pristine. His saliva, his retinal code, combined with Key 00, will release the brother Charles buried eighty years ago."

From the shadows behind the vault door, a heavy pneumatic lock clicked open.

A man stepped into the light. He looked no older than thirty-five, dressed in an antique black military tunic, his face bearing the undeniable, unmistakable bone structure of the Vance dynasty.

His eyes were completely black, devoid of light, and he looked at Ryan not as a brother, but as a harvest.
