Chapter 54 - The Sins of Whitehall

The lockdown protocols of Vance Manor engaged with a hydraulic thud that reverberated through the bedrock beneath the foundation. Steel blast shutters slid down over every window, turning the century-old estate into a windowless fortress of reinforced titanium and concrete.
In the emergency command bunker forty feet beneath the cellars, Ryan slammed an encrypted satellite receiver onto the tactical table.
"The van was abandoned three miles south on Route 128," Thorne reported, wiping rain and powder burn residue from his cheek. "Wiped with acid. The driver took a cyanide capsule before my sweepers could pull him from the cab. Professional mercenaries out of the Balkans, contracted through a shell entity in Liechtenstein."
"Liechtenstein," Ryan muttered. He turned to the massive digital wall displaying the global corporate architecture of Vance Global. "That’s Victoria’s private trust. The one Charles claimed he dissolved after Julian’s death."
"It was never dissolved," Eve said from the tactical bunk, where Dr. Webb was administering an intravenous saline flush laced with epinephrine. Her voice was raspy, but the fire in her eyes had hardened. "Charles lied to you, Ryan. He lied to everyone. Victoria wasn't just his wife—she was his primary financier during the early nineties when Whitehall was being constructed."
Claire entered the bunker, holding baby Leo wrapped in a gray fleece blanket. The child was quiet, lulled by the hum of the auxiliary generators. She walked straight to the table, her face devoid of the panic that had once defined her early days in the Vance dynasty.
"Show me," Claire said simply.
Eve nodded toward the titanium briefcase resting on the central console. "The dual-key code. Ryan, place your thumb on the left sensor. I’ll take the right."
Ryan hesitated for a fraction of a second, his eyes meeting Claire’s. Claire gave him a single, resolute nod.
Ryan pressed his thumb against the glass panel. Eve matched the gesture on the right.
A high-pitched tone sounded, followed by the pneumatic hiss of depressurizing seals. The lid opened, revealing not gold, not currency, but a stack of micro-fiche reels and a single, military-spec holographic drive manufactured by the defense firm Charles had acquired in 1999.
Thorne inserted the drive into the bunker’s offline terminal.
The main wall screen flickered to life. A video file labeled *WHITEHALL ARCHIVE: 1994-B* began playing.
The black-and-white footage showed a sterile, subterranean laboratory. A much younger Victoria Vance—her hair styled in the sharp, opulent bob of ninety-era high society, draped in mink—stood alongside Charles Vance outside an observation window. Behind the glass were several neonatal incubators.
*"The first batch lacks the genetic stability we require, Charles,"* Victoria’s voice came through the bunker speakers, clear, aristocratic, and chillingly devoid of humanity. *"The boy—Julian—he shows excessive dopamine spikes. He will be volatile. Prone to theatrical rages. We cannot build an empire on madness."*
*"He is an asset, Victoria,"* young Charles Vance replied, his arms folded behind his back. *"We will refine the neural dampeners in the second iteration. Ryan’s carrier surrogate is already entering her third trimester."*
*"And if Ryan possesses your mother’s sentimental weakness?"* Victoria sneered, adjusting her diamond-encrusted watch. *"What then?"*
Charles smiled—a cold, reptilian stretch of the lips. *"Then we proceed to the Fourth Protocol. The stasis chamber in Nova Scotia is already under construction. If our sons tear each other apart for the crown, the daughter will inherit the ashes."*
The screen went black.
A suffocating silence descended upon the command bunker. Ryan stood motionless, his fists clenched so tightly that blood threatened to break through his cuticles.
All these years, he had believed Victoria hated him because he wasn't Julian. He had believed she despised Claire because Claire was an outsider, a woman of grace and integrity who had refused to bend to the Vance family’s monstrous vanity.
Now the truth lay stripped bare on the screen: they were all products of an industrial breeding program designed by two sociopaths who viewed human life as nothing more than venture capital.
"She knew," Ryan whispered, the rage vibrating in his vocal cords. "When she pushed Claire at the gender reveal... she wasn't just trying to cause a miscarriage. She was trying to eliminate the next generation before Charles’s automated protocols could recognize Leo as the primary heir."
"Yes," Eve said quietly. "Leo’s birth threw the entire timeline into chaos. Charles’s system registered a direct biological descendant of Ryan’s line. That means that under the Geneva charter, Leo supersedes Victoria completely. She isn't just fighting for money now, Ryan. She’s fighting for her survival. If she doesn't crack that vault in Geneva before the end of the week, the Swiss banking authorities will declare her legally dead and transfer the entire sovereign trust to you."
Suddenly, the red emergency klaxon over the bunker door began to strobe.
Thorne’s tactical console lit up with dozens of crimson breach warnings.
"Primary power grid compromised!" Thorne bellowed, drawing his weapon. "They’re not using mercenaries this time, Ryan. Look at the perimeter feeds!"
May you like
Ryan looked at the monitors. Surrounding the perimeter wall of Vance Manor were not unmarked tactical vans, but six black Cadillac Escalades bearing the official diplomatic plates of the Swiss Consulate.
