Chapter 6 - The Poisoned Pen

By 6:00 AM, the storm had cleared over Manhattan, leaving behind a cold, gray dawn. But while the city’s skies were calm, the internet was a raging inferno.

Margaret Vance had not spent the night resting her bruised ribs. She had spent it weaponizing every media contact she had bought over the last four decades.

Across every major social media platform, a forty-five-second video clip was spreading like a virus under the hashtag *#BillionaireMonster*.

The footage, filmed on a high-end smartphone by one of Margaret’s loyal socialite guests, was masterfully edited. It omitted the first three minutes of the event entirely. There was no footage of Margaret snatching the gender-reveal box. No footage of the pink balloons. No footage of Margaret screaming that a baby girl was a disgrace. And, most critically, no footage of Margaret repeatedly slapping Emily and hurling porcelain vases at her pregnant stomach.

The video began precisely at the moment Ryan charged across the room.

On screen, in pristine 4K resolution, Ryan looked like a raging lunatic. The clip showed him brutally catching his mother’s wrist, delivering two savage slaps that sent the elderly woman crashing into the table, and then, with chilling cruelty, kicking his sixty-two-year-old mother twice in the chest, driving her out into the freezing rain while roaring: *"THIS IS MY HOUSE! GET OUT!"*

The caption, posted by a verified gossip conglomerate owned by one of Margaret’s close allies, read:

> *"EXCLUSIVE: Billionaire heir Ryan Vance violently assaults his 62-year-old mother Margaret Vance at family celebration, leaving her hospitalized with broken ribs. All over an inheritance dispute. Is Ryan Vance Manhattan’s most dangerous heir?"*

Within three hours, the video amassed over thirty million views. The comment sections were bloodbaths of public outrage:

> *"Lock this monster up! Hitting his own mother?!"*

> *"He kicked an elderly woman into the rain?! Absolute psycho!"*

> *"Boycott Vance Global! Arrest Ryan Vance immediately!"*

Outside the VIP entrance of Presbyterian Hospital, a swarm of over fifty journalists, paparazzi, and live broadcast vans had formed a frantic blockade. Flashes popped continuously against the hospital’s revolving glass doors. Microphones were shoved into the faces of security guards.

Inside the private 8th-floor executive recovery suite, Emily lay propped up in the hospital bed. Her face was pale, bruised, and marked with shallow cuts, but her hazel eyes were clear. The ventilator had been successfully removed an hour ago. Beside her bed stood a high-definition monitor streaming a live feed of Grace sleeping safely inside the NICU incubator three floors below.

Ryan sat on the edge of the bed, his fingers intertwined with Emily’s, watching a muted television screen mounted on the wall where a CNN anchor was breaking down the viral video frame by frame.

"She edited it," Emily whispered, her voice still rough from the intubation tube. A single tear tracked through the dark bruising on her cheek. "She’s turning the whole world against you, Ryan. They think you're an animal."

Ryan brought her hand to his lips and kissed her knuckles softly. "Let them think whatever they want for the next hour, sweetheart. A lie sprints a marathon before the truth even ties its shoes. But when the truth catches up, it doesn't run. It crushes."

The door to the suite opened, and Detective Marcus Miller walked in, holding a sleek black hard drive in his hand. Behind him stood Frank Rossi, Vance Manor’s sixty-five-year-old head of private security.

"Mr. Vance," Rossi said, holding his head high with unyielding loyalty. "We followed your instructions to the letter."

"Did Margaret’s people try to access the estate’s server room?" Ryan asked, his voice steady and calm.

"Arthur Sterling arrived at the gates at 3:30 AM with two private investigators and a forged court order demanding immediate seizure of all hard drives," Rossi replied with a grim smile. "I told them the security system was down for scheduled maintenance, had my men escort them off the premises at gunpoint, and pulled the physical backups directly from the subterranean bunker."

Rossi stepped forward and handed the black hard drive to Detective Miller.

"What is this?" Detective Miller asked, turning the drive over in his hand.

"That, Detective," Ryan said, standing up and buttoning his fresh suit jacket, "is the uncompressed, multi-angle, closed-circuit security footage of the entire ballroom from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM last night. Eight synchronized camera angles. Ultra-high-definition lenses equipped with directional parabolic audio sensors capable of picking up a whisper across fifty feet."

Detective Miller plugged the drive into his department-issued laptop resting on the bedside table. Within seconds, the screen illuminated.

The raw footage began.

The audio was horrifyingly crisp. Margaret’s shriek echoed through the room: *"A GIRL?! YOU'VE DISGRACED US!"*

The sound of Margaret’s hand striking Emily’s face was sickeningly clear. *CRACK. CRACK. CRACK. CRACK.*

The footage captured Emily’s desperate attempts to shield her unborn child, Margaret hurling the heavy porcelain vases directly at her pregnant belly, and Emily’s agonized cries of *"My baby... please, God, my baby..."*

Then came Ryan’s intervention. Seen in full context, Ryan’s actions were not the erratic assault of a lunatic; they were the desperate, measured, and heroic defense of a husband protecting his wife and unborn child from imminent, lethal violence.

Detective Miller’s jaw went slack. The two officers standing by the door looked physically sickened.

"Sweet Jesus," Miller muttered under his breath, pausing the video on Margaret’s snarling face as she raised a glass vase to smash it over Emily’s skull. "This isn't elder abuse. This is attempted murder of an unborn child and aggravated felony assault on a pregnant woman."

"Precisely," Ryan said, his eyes flashing with lethal intent. "And now, Detective, I believe you have an arrest warrant to execute."
