Chapter 18 - The Shadow Forensic

Julian didn't go down quietly.
As Agent David Vance reached for his wrist, Julian lunged across the glass conference table, grabbing a heavy crystal water carafe and smashing it against the edge. Glass shattered in all directions. Julian brandished the jagged neck of the bottle, his eyes wild with animal desperation.
"Stay back!" Julian shrieked, backing toward the panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Manhattan skyline. "None of you understand! I spent thirty years eating dirt while you lived in luxury! Arthur’s money was paid to my mother to keep me in an orphanage! It belongs to me! ALL OF IT BELONGS TO ME!"
Ryan didn't flinch. He stepped between Julian and Emily, his posture rock-solid.
"Your mother didn't love you, Julian," Ryan said, his voice quiet, almost mournful. "She didn't track you down to give you a family. She tracked you down to use you as a suicide bomber against me. She knew the moment you challenged the trust, Arthur’s true records would surface. She didn't care if you succeeded; she just wanted me to suffer as much as she did."
Julian’s chest heaved. The words struck him harder than any physical blow. His hand holding the broken bottle began to shake.
"No..." Julian whimpered, his voice cracking. "She promised... she said I was her real son..."
"You were her pawn," Emily said softly from behind Ryan. "Just like she tried to make Ryan her pawn. Just like she tried to destroy Grace. Margaret Vance destroys every life she touches."
Julian looked down at the jagged glass in his hand. He looked out the window at the sprawling city fifty stories below—a kingdom he had dreamed of ruling for thirty years, now slipping away into a prison cell.
With a broken sob, Julian let the glass drop to the carpet.
Two FBI agents rushed forward, slamming Julian against the glass window, pinning his arms behind his back and snapping the steel cuffs onto his wrists.
As they dragged Julian toward the double doors, he locked eyes with Ryan one last time. There was no anger left in Julian’s gaze—only a bottomless, hollow despair.
"Ryan," Julian whispered, his voice trembling. "She isn't done. You think this was her only move? Margaret... Margaret made a deal with them."
Ryan frowned, stepping closer. "A deal with who?"
Julian was shoved out the door by the federal agents before he could answer, his frantic mutterings swallowed by the elevator chime.
Inside the boardroom, the silence was deafening.
Ryan turned to face the twenty-four board members. His presence was commanding, forged through the fire of an unimaginable trial.
"Gentlemen," Ryan said, his voice resonating through the room. "The Arthur Vance Legacy Trust is officially nullified by the probate court of Delaware due to structural fraud. Controlling interest reverts to the fifty-one percent voting shares held in my name."
Ryan looked directly at Senator Hayes.
"Senator," Ryan continued coldly. "You have twenty-four hours to tender your resignation from this board. If your letter is not on my desk by tomorrow morning, the forensic dossier detailing your offshore campaign donations from Margaret Vance’s Cayman accounts will be delivered to the Senate Ethics Committee."
Hayes swallowed hard, nodded weakly, gathered his papers, and practically ran from the boardroom.
Ryan turned to Marcus. "Marcus, execute an immediate freeze on all corporate proxies associated with Margaret Vance. Issue a press release: Vance Global stands united, and our legal team will seek the maximum federal penalties against all conspirators."
The remaining board members stood up and began applauding—a hesitant, relieved applause that grew louder until it filled the entire executive floor.
Emily walked up beside Ryan, slipping her hand into his. Ryan looked down at her, the suffocating weight that had crushed his chest for the past forty-eight hours finally beginning to lift.
"It's over," Emily whispered, resting her head against his shoulder. "We won."

Ryan kissed her temple, holding her hand tightly. "Let's go home to our daughter."
