Chapter 3 - Code Pink at Presbyterian

The automatic double doors of New York-Presbyterian Hospital burst open with a crash that startled the entire triage wing.
Ryan Vance stormed through the threshold, his soaked suit clinging to his frame, carrying Emily wrapped in a heavy wool blanket. The pristine white hospital lighting washed over Emily’s graying complexion. Her lips had turned a terrifying shade of blue-violet, and her head lolled back against Ryan’s chest.
"Help! I need a trauma team! She’s thirty-one weeks pregnant! Blunt force trauma to the abdomen!" Ryan bellowed, his voice commanding instant terror and obedience across the ER floor.
Within three seconds, four nurses, a physician's assistant, and Dr. David Harrison—the chief of obstetrics and a longtime friend of Ryan’s late father—converged on them with a motorized gurney.
"Ryan! Put her down here, now!" Dr. Harrison commanded, his face grim as he registered the blood seeping through the wool blanket.
Ryan carefully laid Emily down. Her fingers weakly clung to his tie, refusing to let go. "Ryan... don't let them take her..." she whispered, her voice barely an audible breath.
"I’m right here, Em. Dr. Harrison is the best in the country. You’re safe now. Both of you are safe," Ryan said, kissing her clammy forehead while running alongside the gurney as the team pushed it down the restricted red line corridor.
"Vitals!" Harrison yelled, ripping open Emily's dress with medical shears to expose her swollen abdomen. The sight brought an icy chill into the room. Across Emily's pale skin were bright red bruises, already darkening into deep purple welts where Margaret’s heavy gift boxes had struck her.
"Blood pressure is crashing! 80 over 45! Heart rate is 145 and climbing!" the head nurse shouted, slapping pulse oximeters onto Emily’s fingers.
"Ultrasound, stat! Where is the fetal monitor?!" Harrison barked, grabbing the wand and slathering blue gel over Emily’s lower belly.
Ryan stood against the stainless steel wall of Trauma Bay 1, his hands clenched into white-knuckled fists, his nails biting deep into his palms until blood pooled between his fingers. He had commanded multi-billion-dollar corporate acquisitions, survived hostile boardroom takeovers, and navigated cutthroat international syndicates, but standing in this sterile room, he had never felt so utterly, helplessly castrated.
The room filled with the static sound of the ultrasound machine.
Harrison swept the probe across the gel. For five agonizing seconds, there was only the hiss of white noise. No rhythmic *thump-thump-thump*. Nothing.
"David..." Ryan croaked, his knees almost buckling. "Tell me there's a heartbeat. Tell me right now."
Dr. Harrison’s jaw tightened. He adjusted the frequency, pressing deeper into the right pelvic quadrant.
Suddenly, a faint, irregular sound fluttered through the speaker. *Thump... thump... thump-thump... thump...*
"Fetal bradycardia," Harrison announced gravely, staring at the monitor. "Heart rate is barely 90. She’s in severe fetal distress. Look here—there’s an abruption. The placenta is separating from the uterine wall. Internal hemorrhaging."
"What does that mean?!" Ryan demanded, stepping forward, his eyes wild.
"It means if we don't deliver this baby in the next twelve minutes, you will lose both of them, Ryan," Dr. Harrison said, his eyes locking with Ryan's with absolute, brutal clarity. "She’s bleeding out internally. We are going to the OR right now for an emergency crash C-section."
"Save them," Ryan whispered, his chest heaving. "Take my blood, take my organs, take whatever you need. Just save them."
"Prep OR Three! Page NICU Level 4! Call Dr. Chen for pediatric surgery!" Harrison roared as the entire team unlocked the gurney wheels.
Emily looked at Ryan through half-closed, glassy eyes as they began rolling her toward the double doors of the surgical suite. "Ryan... love her... if I don't..."
"Stop it! Don't you dare say that!" Ryan shouted, running alongside the gurney until two burly orderlies physically blocked him at the sterile red line. "You're going to hold our daughter, Emily! We are going to take her home! Fight for her! Fight for me!"
The heavy steel doors swung shut. The red light above OR 3 flickered on: *SURGERY IN PROGRESS.*
Ryan was left alone in the cold, echoing hallway. The adrenaline that had propelled him from Vance Manor suddenly evaporated, leaving behind a hollow, agonizing void. He slid down the tiled wall, burying his face in his blood-stained hands, and wept until his body shook.
Across the hallway, the elevator chimed.
The silver doors parted, and out stepped Arthur Sterling, the chief legal counsel for Vance Global and Margaret's personal fixer for over thirty years. Sterling was dressed in a pristine charcoal overcoat, his silver hair neatly slicked back, carrying an alligator-skin briefcase.
He walked up to Ryan, his expression calculated and devoid of empathy.
"Ryan," Sterling began smoothly, resting his fingers on the gold handle of his cane. "Your mother has just been admitted to Lenox Hill. She has two cracked ribs, severe facial contusions, and an acute concussion. The NYPD has already been notified. I suggest we draft a public statement before the press destroys your seat on the board."
May you like
Ryan slowly raised his head. When his eyes met Sterling’s, the lawyer involuntarily took half a step back. The man sitting on the floor did not look like an heir grieving in despair. He looked like an apex predator that had just caught the scent of blood.
