Chapter 65 - The Shattered Mirror

The revelation fell upon the subterranean vault like a guillotine. Ryan felt the foundations of his reality tearing apart. Every late-night feeding, every tiny finger that had curled around his thumb in the neonatal unit, every desperate battle he had waged against Victoria, Charles, and the family empire—had it all been an elaborate staging ground to breed Julian’s second skin?
He looked at Claire. She was trembling so violently she could barely keep her grip on the child. Tears were cutting clear tracks through the grime on her cheeks.
"Ryan..." she choked out, looking up at him with eyes full of absolute agony. "Ryan, look at him. Look at his eyes. Tell me it's a lie. Please, God, tell me it's a lie."
Julian stepped forward, extending a gloved hand. "The game is over, Claire. The child belongs to the foundation. You were merely an incubator. A very well-compensated incubator, had you not made the mistake of siding with my mediocre brother."
One of the mercenaries raised his submachine gun, taking a step toward Claire to wrench the baby from her arms.
In that fraction of a second, Ryan Vance ceased to be an heir, ceased to be a businessman, and became something entirely feral.
*Bang!*
Ryan didn't aim at Julian. He fired directly through the mercenary’s knee. The man crumpled with an agonized scream, his weapon clattering across the brick pavers. Thorne reacted instantaneously, sweeping his rifle across the corridor and dropping the second operative with a double-tap to the sternum.
Julian backed away with an unnatural, terrified agility, pressing himself against the heavy iron wine racks as Ryan lunged across the distance, grabbing his older brother by the throat and slamming him against the granite masonry.
The carbon-fiber cane clattered to the floor. Ryan pressed the barrel of his Glock directly beneath Julian’s chin, forcing his head back until Julian’s damaged neck vertebrae popped audibly.
"I don't give a damn whose DNA is in his blood," Ryan snarled, his voice vibrating with a murderous rage that shook the damp air. "I held him when he took his first breath. I gave him my name. I am his father. And you are nothing but a decomposing ghost who crawled out of an open grave."
Julian clawed at Ryan’s iron grip, his pale face turning a mottled purple as his oxygen-starved lungs heaved. "Kill me..." he choked out through grinning teeth. "Kill me, Ryan... and the telemetry chip in my chest stops transmitting. If my heart stops, the scuttle charges on the *St. Jude’s Ledger* detonate. Pier 42 has forty thousand gallons of liquefied industrial toxins. Half of Boston Harbor will burn... and your little family will be blamed for the catastrophic environmental terrorism."
"He's not bluffing," Eve yelled, frantically tapping her portable terminal. "I'm detecting an encrypted biometric telemetry broadcast linking Julian’s pacemaker directly to the automated scuttle valves on that vessel!"
Ryan’s thumb rested on the hammer of the gun. Every fiber of his being screamed to pull the trigger, to end the monstrous narcissism that had plagued his family for two generations.
"Ryan, don't!" Claire’s voice cut through the blood-red haze in his mind. She had dragged herself up, standing tall now despite the terror, holding Leo firmly against her heart. "Don't let him turn you into Charles. If you kill him like this, he wins. He proves that Vance men can only destroy."
Ryan stared into Julian’s milky, malevolent eye. He saw the cold triumph lurking behind the pain—the desire to force Ryan across the moral threshold from which there was no return.
Slowly, deliberately, Ryan lowered the weapon.
With a brutal, sweeping hook of his right fist, Ryan struck Julian across the temple. The older brother collapsed onto the flagstones, unconscious, his silk handkerchief fluttering down into a pool of stagnant water.
"Thorne, zip-tie him with heavy-duty tactical cuffs and gag him," Ryan ordered, his chest heaving. "Eve, override that garage blast gate with the hard-line manual crank. We have forty minutes before that ship’s failsafe activates."
"Where are we going?" Claire asked, her voice steadying as she wiped the tears from her face.
May you like
Ryan turned to her, his eyes blazing with an unyielding, unbreakable resolve. "We're going to Pier 42. We're going to dismantle his little empire in front of the entire world."
