Chapter 2 - The Crimson Stain on Marble

The silence inside Vance Manor was heavier than a vault door sealing shut. Nobody dared to breathe. Nobody dared to move. The scent of ozone, fear, and spilt vintage Krug champagne created a nauseating cocktail in the grand hall.

Margaret Vance remained slumped against the towering mahogany entrance door. Her chest heaved beneath the emerald-green satin of her gown, the fabric bunched and wrinkled where Ryan’s dress shoe had left a faint, dusty imprint. Her hand trembled as she touched her swollen cheek. A line of crimson trickled from the corner of her lips, staining her impeccably painted chin.

"You... you struck me," Margaret whispered, her aristocratic accent splintering into jagged pieces. Her eyes searched Ryan’s face, desperately seeking a glimmer of the obedient son she had controlled and manipulated for thirty-four years. "In front of everyone... you struck your own mother for *that*?"

Ryan did not answer with words. He didn't blink. His posture was that of a commander who had crossed the Rubicon and burned the bridge to ash behind him. With one fluid motion, he reached out, gripped the ornate bronze handle of the front door, and yanked it open.

A wall of torrential rain and howling autumn wind blasted into the foyer, fluttering the edges of the scattered silk tablecloths and sending fallen pink balloons dancing across the blood-spotted floor.

"Out," Ryan repeated. His voice was a flatline. No emotion. No hesitation.

Margaret scrambled to her feet, her legs shaking like dry twigs. She looked back at the grand hall, searching the faces of her lifelong friends—CEOs, judges, senators, and socialites. Every single one of them averted their gaze. Some looked down at their polished shoes; others stepped back into the shadows of the marble pillars. The reign of Margaret Vance had unraveled in less than three minutes.

"You will regret this, Ryan," Margaret hissed, her teeth bared like a rabid animal trapped in a corner. She gathered her damp, stained train in both hands. "You think you own this estate? You think you own the Vance name? I made you! I built everything you stand on! By tomorrow morning, I will strip you of every dime, every share, every single square inch of earth you walk on! You will be a beggar in the street with your little gutter rat!"

"If you ever step foot on this property again," Ryan said, leaning down so his words were carved directly into her ear, "I won't use my open hand. Now leave before I have security drag you down the driveway by your hair."

Margaret gasped, horrified by the terrifying reality of his threat, and stumbled out into the pouring rain. Her four-inch designer heels slid on the wet flagstones of the grand portico. The heavy mahogany doors slammed shut behind her with a thud that reverberated through the marrow of everyone standing inside.

The moment the latch clicked, Ryan spun on his heel. The cold executioner vanished, replaced instantly by a man drowning in sheer panic.

"Emily!"

He crossed the twenty feet of marble in three strides, dropping violently to his knees beside Mrs. Gable. Emily was trembling so hard her teeth were chattering audibly. Her pale pink maternity dress was drenched in sweat, cold champagne, and droplets of blood from shallow glass cuts along her arms. But what stopped Ryan's heart was the spreading dark crimson patch blooming at the bottom of her skirt.

"Ryan... it hurts," Emily gasped, her fingers digging through his tailored suit jacket, grasping his bicep with desperate strength. "The baby... she's not moving. Ryan, she's not moving!"

"Call 911!" Ryan roared over his shoulder, his voice echoing violently off the ceiling. "CALL 911 RIGHT NOW!"

Three guests instantly pulled out their phones, their hands shaking as they dialed.

"No, cancel that! We're not waiting for an ambulance from town," Ryan corrected himself, his mind snapping into emergency operational speed. He slipped one arm securely behind Emily’s back and another under her knees, gently lifting her into his chest. Emily screamed in agony as the movement jarred her lower abdomen, burying her face into Ryan’s neck.

"Clara! Bring the first aid kit to the black SUV! Call Dr. Harrison at Presbyterian! Tell him code pink, severe abdominal trauma, thirty-one weeks gestation!" Ryan barked orders as he moved toward the private garage corridor.

"Yes, Mr. Ryan! Right away!" Mrs. Gable ran ahead, kicking open the double service doors.

Ryan walked with swift, terrifying purpose, completely ignoring the stunned crowd of elites. A high-ranking state senator stepped forward, his palms raised. "Ryan, son, let us help—"

"Get the hell out of my house," Ryan snarled without breaking his stride. "Every single one of you. Party's over."

As he pushed through the heavy service door into the heated garage, Emily’s grip on his shirt began to slacken. Her chestnut hair hung limp across his arm, her breathing shallow, erratic.

"Stay with me, Em," Ryan pleaded, his voice breaking for the first time as tears blurred his vision. He kicked open the door to his armored Range Rover, laying her gently across the leather backseat. "Stay with me, baby girl. Please. Both of you. Don't leave me."

Emily’s pale eyelids fluttered open, her hazel eyes clouded with agonizing fear. "She's our daughter, Ryan... Margaret... she wanted to kill our daughter..."

"I won't let her touch you ever again," Ryan choked out, pulling the seatbelt around her waist and securing her with trembling hands. "I swear on my life, Emily. Margaret is dead to us."

He slammed the rear door, jumped into the driver's seat, and pressed the engine start button. The twin-turbo V8 engine roared to life with a ferocious growl. He hit the garage door remote, slammed the transmission into reverse, and tore out into the blinding rainstorm, leaving the ghosts of Vance Manor far behind.
