Chapter 53 - The Scent of Cyanide and Lilies

Dawn broke over the Atlantic coast in shades of bruised slate and lead. Inside the secure subterranean medical suite of Vance Manor, Dr. Marcus Webb—the only physician Ryan trusted after the Presbyterian betrayal—pulled the needle from Eve’s arm with surgical delicacy.
"She isn't lying about the compound, Ryan," Webb said twenty minutes later, sliding a digital centrifuge analysis across the display screen. "Her white blood cell count is plummeting at an exponential rate. There is a synthetic synthetic-peptide chain bound to her hemoglobin. It’s dormant while chilled, but at standard body temperature... it’s systematically cannibalizing her bone marrow. Two weeks is an optimistic estimate. Ten days is more realistic."
Ryan ran both hands through his hair, staring at the telemetry. "Can we synthesize an antidote here?"
"Not without the primary molecular template," Webb sighed. "Charles didn't file patents on this, for obvious reasons. It’s proprietary bio-engineering from the Whitehall black labs. The only functional sample is in Geneva."
Upstairs in the private conservatory, Claire sat across from Eve, a pot of untouched Earl Grey cooling between them. Thorne stood outside the French doors, an imposing shadow against the morning mist.
"You don't drink tea," Claire noted.
"Sensory inputs were regulated during developmental phases," Eve said quietly, her hands folded in her lap with unnatural stillness. "Warm liquids create gastrointestinal variations. We were fed nutrient suspension via line."
"Stop saying 'we,'" Claire said gently. "There is no 'we' anymore. The rig is at the bottom of the ocean. Julian is buried. CJ is sleeping. There is only you."
Eve looked up, her silver eyes reflecting the pale morning light through the conservatory glass. "Do you know what he told me, Claire? Before he turned the stasis valves in October of 2018?"
Claire leaned forward, her maternal heart aching despite herself. "What did Charles say?"
"He told me that love was an evolutionary defect," Eve murmured. "He said that when he married Victoria, he thought ambition would be enough to bind their bloodline into an empire that would outlast the century. But Victoria was greedy. She wanted power today, while Charles wanted dominance for the next five generations. He told me Ryan was soft because Ryan looked at people and saw souls instead of balance sheets."
"Ryan looked at you downstairs and saw a threat to his family," Claire corrected. "That isn't softness. That’s survival."
A sudden, sharp metallic pop echoed from the front courtyard.
Thorne didn't shout; he moved. In half a second, the French doors shattered as Thorne drove Claire to the Persian rug, shielding her torso with his Kevlar-lined frame.
Through the cracked glass, a small, pressurized projectile rolled across the tile floor. It hissed—a thin, white plume of aerosolized gas smelling intensely of bitter almonds and crushed lilies.
"Hydrogen cyanide variant!" Thorne roared into his comm-link. "Perimeter breach! West terrace!"
Before Ryan could burst through the doorway from the lower hall, Eve moved with blinding, terrifying velocity. Her conditioning took over—no hesitation, no self-preservation. She grabbed the antique silver tea urn from the table, slammed it over the hissing canister to contain the initial atmospheric burst, and kicked the entire assembly through the shattered French doors onto the stone terrace outside.
The blast shattered the exterior balustrade, sending shrapnel whistling into the lawn.
Eve stumbled backward, coughing violently, blood immediately welling from her nose as trace amounts of the vapor scorched her compromised respiratory lining.
Ryan crashed into the room, weapon drawn, his eyes scanning the smoke until they landed on Claire, who was coughing but whole beneath Thorne’s frame. Then he looked at Eve, who was collapsed against the wall, clutching her ribs, her knuckles white.
"East gate!" Thorne’s tactical headset crackled with static. "Black Mercedes van breaking the barrier! Drone strike on our primary communications array!"
Ryan knelt beside Eve, his fingers pressing against the carotid artery in her neck. Her pulse was erratic, racing at nearly one hundred and eighty beats per minute.

"They didn't come to steal the key," Eve rasped through crimson-flecked lips, grabbing Ryan’s lapel with surprising strength. "They know I’m here. Victoria... she’s trying to scorch the house, Ryan. If she can't have Geneva... she’s burning the bloodline to the ground."
