Chapter 35 - The Hostage Protocol

“Sophia!”

Emily broke cover from behind the pillar, charging up the stairs like a wounded lioness, her SIG Sauer raised, her fear completely swallowed by primal maternal instinct.

“Emily, no!” Ryan lunged forward, catching her by the waist as one of Julian’s tactical operators raised a weapon toward her.

“Lower the rifle!” Julian barked instantly at his man. The contractor lowered the barrel without a second’s hesitation. Julian looked at Emily, his expression devoid of mockery, replaced by a cold, calculating respect. “I told you, Mrs. Vance. I am not Margaret. I do not butcher infants at cocktail parties. Your child is unharmed. The stun charge was detonated in the guest suite across the hall to distract your two federal marshals.”

From the top of the grand balcony, two Aegis Trident operatives emerged, their weapons holstered. One of them carried a secure tactical transport cradle. Inside it, wrapped safely in her pink cashmere blanket, Sophia was crying softly, her tiny face flushed red, but physically completely untouched.

Beside the operatives walked Margaret Vance’s former personal physician, Dr. Harrison—the man who had falsified medical records during the trial and vanished from Manhattan three months ago.

“Harrison,” Ryan spat, his blood boiling. “You sold out to him too?”

“Dr. Harrison understands the financial reality of his situation, Ryan,” Julian said smoothly. “He requires three million dollars to maintain his private practice in Lisbon. I have three million dollars. You have an indictment pending against him.”

Julian turned back to Ryan, his hands returning to his coat pockets. “Here is the arrangement, Ryan. We are going down to the sub-cellar. You will place your palm and your retina against the scanner beside mine. We will open our father’s vault. We will transfer the bearer bonds and the title deeds to my offshore foundation in Guernsey.”

“And if I refuse?” Ryan demanded, his eyes fixed on the cradle at the top of the stairs. “If I let you shoot me right here, you never get inside that room. The thermite charge will ignite, and everything Father buried will burn to cinder.”

Julian tilted his head, smiling with chilling cruelty. “You won’t refuse, Ryan. Because you are a moral man. You are the honorable, chivalrous Ryan Vance who sacrifices himself for his family. If you do not walk down those stairs with me in the next sixty seconds, Dr. Harrison will administer a very mild, completely undetectable pediatric sedative to your daughter.”

Emily let out a ragged, suffocating sob, her fingernails digging through Ryan’s wool shirt into his skin. “Ryan... Ryan, do whatever he says. Please. Take everything. Give him the ships, give him the gold, give him the damn house! Just don't let them touch her!”

Ryan looked at Emily. He saw the sheer, unadulterated terror in the eyes of the woman who had already survived Margaret’s brutality, who had fought through a high-risk pregnancy and nearly bled to death on a Manhattan operating table.

He could not let her break again.

Ryan looked back at Julian. “The baby stays with Emily. Agent Thorne stays with them in this hallway. If a single one of your men takes another step toward my daughter, I will smash my own thumb against the scanner’s lockout sensor, trigger the permanent security failsafe, and blow that vault into the bedrock.”

Julian studied Ryan’s face for three long seconds, measuring the resolve in his younger brother’s eyes.

“Agreed,” Julian said. He snapped his fingers. The operative holding Sophia carefully walked down the stairs, set the tactical cradle on the marble floor ten feet from Emily, and retreated behind Julian.

Emily dropped to her knees, scooping Sophia into her arms, weeping hysterically against the infant’s hair as Thorne moved into a defensive position directly in front of them, his weapon leveled at Julian’s chest.

“Let’s go, little brother,” Julian said, gesturing toward the basement door with an ironic bow. “Let us see what our dear departed father left for his favorite sons.”

Ryan took a deep, steadying breath. As he turned toward the cellar stairs, his eyes met Thorne’s for a fraction of a second.

Ryan blinked twice—a deliberate, pre-arranged military signal Thorne had taught him during the trial security briefings: *Countermeasure active.*

Thorne’s jaw clenched almost imperceptibly. He lowered his weapon half an inch, acknowledging the code.

Ryan descended into the darkness with his brother, leaving the marble hall behind him.
