Chapter 66 - The Black Ship of Boston

The rain had turned into a torrential coastal gale by the time the armored Suburban breached the industrial gates of Pier 42. The docks were deserted, abandoned under the emergency federal quarantine order. Giant orange shipping cranes stood like skeletal giants against the bruised, thunderous sky.

Moored at the end of the concrete pier was the *St. Jude’s Ledger*. The freighter was massive, rust-streaked, and devoid of running lights, save for a pulsating amber beacon atop the bridge tower.

Thorne cut the SUV's headlights three hundred yards out, coasting the heavy vehicle into the shadow of a row of corrugated steel shipping containers. In the rear seat, Julian Vance was bound, gagged, and hooked to a portable vitals monitor that Eve held on her lap. The digital heart rate read steady at ninety-eight beats per minute.

"The Coast Guard perimeter is holding at a two-mile exclusion zone," Thorne reported, checking his thermal optics through the rain-streaked windshield. "They think it's a dirty bomb or a biohazard leak. Julian’s private cyber-cell fed false sensor telemetry to Homeland Security to keep the local authorities from boarding."

"Which gives him total control of the dock until his terms are met," Eve added. She looked up from her screen, tapping the data feed. "Ryan, the vessel isn't carrying industrial toxins."

Ryan turned from the passenger seat. "What is it carrying?"

Eve swallowed hard, turning the laptop screen so Ryan and Claire could see the structural schematics. "It’s a mobile bio-manufacturing facility. Charles didn't just build the stasis lab off the coast of Montauk. He built this ship as an offshore sovereign clinic outside the jurisdiction of the FDA, the Hague, or any maritime regulatory agency. Down in the primary cargo hold... there are forty-two stasis pods."

Claire let out a horrified breath, clutching Leo beneath her waterproof slicker. "Forty-two? Forty-two what?"

"Stem-line replicates," Eve said, her voice shaking with clinical disgust. "Julian didn't just want one backup. When the leukemia relapsed four years ago, he realized that direct tissue harvesting carried genetic decay risks. He created an entire pipeline of embryonic lines, all derived from the Vance bloodline, waiting to be brought to term whenever his organs failed."

"He turned human life into a parts catalog," Claire whispered, her voice hardening with an absolute, righteous fury that replaced every ounce of her previous terror. "And he used my body to test the viability of the line."

Ryan reached out, placing his hand over Claire’s cold fingers. He looked down at Leo, who was sleeping peacefully beneath the blanket, oblivious to the monstrous machinations that had preceded his birth.

"Leo isn't a clone, Claire," Ryan said softly, his voice cutting through the patter of rain against the armored glass.

Claire looked up, startled. "Ryan, you heard what he said in the cellar—"

"I don't need a lab sequencer to tell me who this boy belongs to," Ryan interrupted, his voice thick with emotion. "Look at his hands, Claire. Look at the webbing between his thumb and index finger. My grandfather had that. I have that. Julian never had it. Julian lied to break us. He wanted to make you discard the baby so his operatives could scoop him up without a fight."

Eve leaned forward suddenly, her eyes scanning the genetic manifests on her screen with frantic speed. "Wait... Ryan is right. The transfer logs... look at the batch serial numbers! The sample Charles authorized for the clinic was labeled Vance-Zero. But the technician who executed the prep at Mass General was Dr. Sarah Lin—the physician Victoria fired three weeks later!"

"Lin was loyal to Victoria," Ryan realized instantly, the pieces falling into place like a series of interlocking deadbolts. "Victoria was paranoid that Charles was siphoning assets to an illegitimate child. She had Lin swap the donor sample back to mine to ensure that whatever baby Claire carried was definitively *my* biological heir—someone Victoria believed she could control through me!"

Claire gasped, pressing her forehead against Leo’s soft hair as a sob of sheer relief broke from her chest. "He is yours. He really is yours."

"He was always mine," Ryan said fiercely.

From the backseat, Julian began thrashing against his restraints, his muffled screams choked by the tactical tape across his mouth, his single good eye rolling wildly in panic.

Ryan turned around, looking at his brother with absolute, merciless clarity. "Your own mother out-conspired you, Julian. Even in her madness, she ruined your grand design."

Ryan unholstered his weapon and checked the chamber. "Thorne, prep the breaching charges. We're boarding that ship, we're seizing the control servers, and we're shutting down the Vance family's dark history once and for all."
