Chapter 98 - The Broken Sibling

The mountain groaned like a dying beast.

The shockwave from the thermobaric charges above hit the vault like a supersonic hammer.

Even through the six-inch armor steel of the open blast door, the atmospheric pressure dropped instantly, popping their ears and knocking all four of them off their feet.

Dust, pulverized concrete, and chunks of ancient granite rained down from the vaulted ceiling.

The single emergency floodlight flickered violently, casting erratic, dancing shadows across the octagonal chamber.

"Marcus!" Ethan coughed, pulling himself up through the choking grey cloud of concrete dust. "Report!"

Marcus scrambled to the threshold of the blast door, coughing heavily into his sleeve. He pointed his tactical flashlight out into the stairwell.

Where the spiral iron staircase had been, there was now only a solid wall of collapsed granite, mangled iron girders, and burning debris.

"Stairwell is completely blocked!" Marcus shouted over the screech of twisting metal. "They brought down the entire north foundation! We're sealed in!"

"The ventilation shafts?" Olivia asked, rushing to Ethan’s side, wiping blood from a minor scrape above her eyebrow.

"Crushed," Marcus replied grimly. "We’re running on whatever oxygen is trapped in this vault. Two hours, maybe three before CO2 poisoning sets in."

Suddenly, a metallic click echoed through the chamber.

Ethan turned slowly.

Standing by the obsidian pedestal, holding the heavy leather-bound Sovereign Ledger against his chest with his left arm, was Thomas.

In his right hand was his gold pistol, aimed with trembling, murderous intent directly at Olivia’s temple.

"Thomas..." Ethan said, raising both hands, his voice dropping into an unnatural, hypnotic stillness. "Lower the weapon."

"You ruined everything!" Thomas screamed, tears cutting wild, manic tracks through the dust caked on his face. "You wiped the accounts! You wiped out forty billion dollars! That was mine! That was my birthright!"

"It was never your birthright, Thomas," Olivia said, her voice remarkably steady despite the gun pointed at her head. "It was blood money. It was stolen from thousands of innocent families by our parents."

"Shut up!" Thomas shrieked, cocking the hammer of the pistol. "Shut your mouth, you traitorous bitch! Mother was right about you! You were always weak! You chose this... this nobody over your own dynasty!"

"I am the Sovereign, Thomas," Ethan took a deliberate, slow half-step forward. "Charles gave me the ring. He gave me the ciphers. You know why?"

Thomas’s eyes darted frantically between Ethan and Olivia. "Because he was senile! Because he went mad in that hospital!"

"No," Ethan said softly. "Because he knew you were exactly like Victoria. Cowardly. Cruel. Incapable of building anything on your own, only capable of stealing from the shadows."

"I am a Sterling!" Thomas roared, his finger tightening visibly on the trigger.

Ethan didn't wait.

He didn't give Thomas the chance to make the fatal calculation.

Ethan lunged.

With blinding speed, his left hand shot forward, grabbing the slide of Thomas’s pistol and forcing it upward just as the weapon discharged.

The deafening report of the gunshot echoed off the granite walls, the bullet ricocheting harmlessly off the vaulted ceiling.

Ethan twisted his wrist with brutal, mechanical precision, dislocating Thomas’s thumb and tearing the gold gun from his grip, sending it clattering across the stone floor.

Thomas let out a high-pitched scream of agony, dropping the Sovereign Ledger.

Driven by primal, cornered desperation, Thomas threw a wild, desperate punch that caught Ethan across the cheekbone.

The blow barely registered.

Ethan seized Thomas by the lapels of his ruined Tom Ford jacket, slamming him backward against the obsidian pedestal with enough force to knock the breath from his lungs.

Thomas gasped, his hands clawing at Ethan’s forearms, his legs kicking uselessly against the stone.

"You took my daughter from her crib," Ethan whispered, his face inches from his brother’s, his voice so quiet, so devoid of human warmth that Thomas’s eyes dilated with sheer, paralyzing horror.

"You put a gun to my wife’s head."

"Ethan... please..." Thomas choked out, blood bubbling at the corner of his lips. "We’re brothers... the same blood... Charles’s sons..."

"Charles’s blood was cursed," Ethan said.

He cocked his right fist back, ready to deliver the final, crushing strike that would end Thomas Sterling’s life.

"Ethan, stop!"

Olivia’s voice cut through the red mist of Ethan’s fury like a flare in the night.

Ethan froze. His fist remained suspended an inch from Thomas’s face, his knuckles white, his chest heaving with ragged, violent breaths.

Olivia walked over, placing a gentle, trembling hand on Ethan’s shoulder.

"Don't do it, Ethan," she said softly, looking into his eyes with profound, heartbreaking clarity. "Look at him. He’s already broken. If you kill him like this, in the dark... you become Charles. You become Victoria."

Ethan stared at his wife.

The manic rage that had fueled his body for the last four hours began to recede, replaced by a deep, bone-weary exhaustion.

He looked down at Thomas.

The once-proud heir of the Sterling empire was weeping openly, curling into a fetal position against the pedestal, his designer clothes torn to shreds, his spirit completely crushed.

Ethan slowly lowered his fist.

He stepped back, letting Thomas slide pathetically to the floor.

"You're right," Ethan whispered, his hand finding Olivia’s, their fingers intertwining tightly. "He isn't worth the stain on my soul."

Marcus approached from the blast door, looking down at the broken man with cold indifference.

"We still have a problem, sir," Marcus said, shining his light around the sealed chamber. "We’re trapped sixty feet underground, the air is running out, and the mountain is still burning above us."

Ethan looked down at the fallen Sovereign Ledger.

He bent down, picked up the heavy book, and unlatched the third brass clasp.

Inside the back cover, embedded within the thick leather binding, was a small, recessed steel compartment.

Within the compartment lay a single, heavy brass key, engraved with an anchor.

Ethan looked toward the back wall of the vault, where the damp stone was glistening with trickles of fresh, running water.

"Charles didn't just build this vault to hide his sins," Ethan said, a faint, grim smile touching the corner of his mouth.

"He built it to escape them."
