Chapter 65 - The Boardroom Coup

Thirty minutes earlier, in the high-altitude glass palace of Sterling Global on the 68th floor of the Midtown tower, chaos reigned.

It was midnight, but every chandelier was blazing. Twenty-four members of the Board of Directors, high-ranking corporate counsels, and private wealth managers were gathered around the polished obsidian conference table. Half of them were still in evening attire; others had rushed in with unbuttoned collars and disheveled ties.

On the massive digital display at the end of the room, a live news broadcast from CNN flickered on mute:

*BREAKING: PRIVATE JET EXPLODES OVER NEW JERSEY. MATRIARCH VICTORIA STERLING IN FEDERAL CUSTODY. CEO ETHAN STERLING UNACCOUNTED FOR.*

At the head of the table sat Marcus Kane, the senior trustee and Arthur Pendelton’s primary corporate co-conspirator. Kane had slicked-back black hair, the sharp, hollow face of a bird of prey, and eyes that saw human tragedy purely as an opportunity to adjust asset valuations.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Kane announced, slamming his silver pen onto the table to silence the murmurs. "The situation is catastrophic, but our fiduciary duty to the shareholders and the sovereign creditors does not pause for personal tragedy."

"Ethan Sterling is still the CEO," interrupted Evelyn Cross, the company’s head of international compliance and one of Ethan’s few remaining loyalists. "We cannot convene an emergency sovereignty session without his authorization! His wife and sister were just targeted in an assassination attempt—"

"His wife and sister are dead, Evelyn," Kane said smoothly, pulling a signed document from his leather portfolio. "And Ethan has vanished. The NYPD reports his personal vehicle was abandoned on 42nd Street. He is emotionally incapacitated, potentially unstable, and entirely unfit to wield the sovereign executive authority of a forty-billion-dollar multinational conglomerate."

Kane slid the document toward the center of the table.

"Under Article Nine, Section Four of the Charles Sterling Charter, if the presiding heir is rendered non-functional by catastrophic grief or mental collapse, the Sovereign Council assumes immediate conservatorship. Arthur Pendelton has already countersigned from the Zurich administrative desk."

Evelyn stood up, her palms flat against the obsidian. "This is an illegal coup! Arthur Pendelton was relieved of his duties three weeks ago by Ethan himself!"

"Pendelton answers to the Sovereign Trust, Evelyn, not to Ethan," Kane sneered. "Ethan was merely an administrator. Charles made sure that no single child could dismantle this empire out of emotional weakness. Look at the markets! The Tokyo exchange opened thirty minutes ago, and Sterling Global stock is down twenty-two percent! By dawn, our liquidity reserves will face margin calls from the European Central Bank!"

Kane leaned forward, his voice hardening into an iron command. "We vote now. We transfer executive authority to the Sovereign Trustee Council, freeze all assets tied to Ethan’s personal accounts, and issue a public statement that the family legacy remains intact under professional custody."

"And what about Victoria?" asked another director, his face pale with anxiety. "The feds are holding her at 26 Federal Plaza. If she talks about the offshore shell accounts—"

"Victoria is finished," Kane dismissed callously. "Her lawyers have already been instructed to file for an emergency psychiatric evaluation. She will spend the rest of her days in a private sanatorium in Switzerland, medicated into silence. She was a liability. The board moves forward."

Kane raised his right hand. "All those in favor of enacting the Dead Hand Protocol and removing Ethan Sterling as CEO?"

One by one, the board members—terrified for their stock options, terrified of the crashing markets, and bound by decades of Charles Sterling’s corrupt patronage—began to lift their hands.

Twelve hands. Fourteen. Seventeen.

"The motion carries," Kane declared, reaching for the company’s golden seal to stamp the transfer deed. "As of this moment, Ethan Sterling is stripped of all executive—"

*CRASH.*

The double glass doors of the boardroom shattered inward in a shower of diamond-sharp safety fragments.

Two private security guards flew backward through the debris, crashing against the mahogany credenza.

Through the opening walked Ethan Sterling.

His trench coat was soaked with rain and blackened with soot. Blood from the cut on his cheek had dried into a dark crust across his jawline. His eyes were cold, predatory, and burning with a lethal fury that made the seventeen men who had just raised their hands instinctively pull them down.

Beside him walked four federal marshals with assault rifles slung across their chests, led by an Assistant United States Attorney carrying a red-stamped federal injunction.

"Keep your hands on the table, Kane," Ethan said, his voice quiet, steady, and terrifyingly clear. "Anyone who moves an inch spends the rest of the night in a federal holding cell on charges of corporate treason and conspiracy to commit aggravated kidnapping."

Kane turned white as chalk. "Ethan... you... you’re out of your mind! You can't bring armed federal agents into a sovereign board meeting!"

"This isn't a board meeting," Ethan said, walking up to the head of the table until he stood directly over Kane. He picked up the golden seal, weighed it in his hand, and slammed it down onto Kane’s fingers with crushing force.

Kane shrieked in agony, clutching his bruised hand.

Ethan leaned in, his lips inches from Kane’s ear. "Arthur Pendelton made a mistake tonight, Marcus. He thought I’d run to the press. He thought I’d surrender. But you see, my father didn't just teach me how to manage wealth."

Ethan straightened up, looking across the trembling board members.

May you like

"He taught me how to destroy men who try to take what’s mine. And before the sun comes up, every single one of you who signed that paper will be begging for Victoria’s cell."
