Chapter 34 - The Zurich Flight

The halon gas flooded the subterranean hallway like freezing steam, choking the vision of the three armed operatives.

Gunfire coughed through suppressors, the rounds sparking off the reinforced steel lockers behind Ethan’s head.

"Move!" Ethan roared, grabbing Olivia’s hand and shoving Carter toward the emergency escape chute behind the main vault alcove—an old maintenance tunnel designed during the Cold War for federal couriers.

Carter, wheezing through the acrid mist, threw his shoulder against the safety bar of the iron fire hatch. The heavy door groaned open, revealing a spiral iron staircase ascending toward the street grid.

Ethan dragged Olivia through the threshold just as a bullet struck the iron frame an inch from his ear, throwing hot copper fragments into the sleeve of his jacket. Ethan turned, caught the heavy fire door with his boot, and kicked it shut, throwing the mechanical deadlock bar into place.

From the other side came the frantic thud of shoulders slamming against the steel, followed by the muffled curses of the operatives in Swiss-German.

"They're sealed in the halon zone!" Carter choked out, clutching his chest on the stairs. "The depository system automatically purges oxygen for ninety seconds! They'll have to blow the outer gate to get out!"

"Then we have four minutes before their surface perimeter hears it," Ethan said, pulling Olivia up the spiral stairs.

They emerged into a rainy alleyway two blocks north of Wall Street, stepping out of a disguised grate behind a municipal power substation. The city hummed with the indifferent noise of late-night yellow cabs and wet asphalt.

Ethan’s private armored Maybach was idling at the curb, the driver—an ex-Navy contractor named Marcus—instantly opening the doors as he spotted the trio bursting from the alley.

"Airport," Ethan commanded as he shoved Olivia inside and climbed in behind her. "Teterboro. Now."

"Sir? What about your morning briefings?" Marcus asked, throwing the car into gear and swerving into the Broadway traffic.

"Sterling Capital runs itself until Monday," Ethan said, pulling a handkerchief from his pocket and gently wiping a smudge of vault grease from Olivia’s temple. "Call the private hangar. Prepare the Gulfstream for transatlantic flight. Flight plan: Zurich-Kloten."

"Ethan, wait," Olivia said, catching his hand, her chest heaving as the adrenaline slowly receded. "They tried to kill us in the middle of Manhattan. If Genevieve has operatives operating inside our city with that level of impunity, flying into Zurich is walking directly into the slaughterhouse."

"She owns the slaughterhouse, Liv," Ethan replied, his gray-blue eyes burning with an icy, dangerous clarity. "Richard is in that sanitarium. He’s the only person alive who holds the cryptographic keys to her syndicate accounts. If she gets to him first, she doesn't just silence my past—she assumes total legal conservatorship over everything Richard held, including Olivia’s family's old maritime trusts."

Carter leaned forward from the jump seat, his phone already glowing in the dark interior. "Ethan is right. I just checked the Swiss federal commercial registry. An emergency motion was filed two hours ago in Zurich cantonal court to transfer Richard Sterling’s complete liquid estate to an offshore entity called *The Montague Trust*. If we aren't standing in front of that magistrate by ten o'clock tomorrow morning with Richard’s original deposition, the Sterling name ceases to exist."

"Then we don't fight her with guns," Olivia said, her sharp mind immediately shifting into strategic gear, the panic evaporating from her posture. "We fight her with what she fears most: the spotlight. The European press knows Richard Sterling. If an American CEO walks into that sanitarium with the international press in tow, she can't make us disappear without exposing her entire network."

Ethan looked at his wife, a faint, savage smile touching his lips despite the chaos. "That’s why I married you." He turned to Carter. "Contact Reuters, Bloomberg Europe, and the Swiss Financial Review. Inform them that the new Chairman of Sterling Global is holding an unannounced press conference outside the Sonnenberg Clinic on Lake Zurich at noon tomorrow. Give them one headline."

Carter raised his pen. "Which is?"

Ethan leaned back against the leather seat, staring out into the rain-streaked neon lights of New York.
