Chapter 67 - Blood in the Snow

*CRACK-BOOM!*
The ceiling of the underground operating suite didn't just collapse—it atomized under a specialized shape-charge explosion. Concrete chunks and pulverized sheetrock rained down in a blinding cloud of white dust.
Before the dust could clear, flashbang grenades detonated with earth-shattering concussions: *BANG! BANG!*
Dr. Mercer shrieked, dropping the syringe of prostaglandin onto the tiled floor, where the glass shattered into a hundred harmless pieces. The blinding light and shockwaves threw the second mercenary violently against the wall, disorienting him completely.
"Now!" Eleanor roared.
Taking advantage of Sergeant Miller's hesitation, Eleanor threw her entire weight sideways. The heavy iron radiator she was zip-tied to had been partially dislodged from the crumbling wall by the blast above. With a fierce, adrenaline-fueled cry, she slammed the iron fins of the radiator directly into Miller’s knee.
The sergeant grunted in agony, his leg buckling beneath him as he crashed to the floor.
Eleanor didn't waste a second. She reached out with her bound hands, grabbed Miller’s combat knife from his tactical vest, and dragged the razor-sharp edge across the heavy plastic zip-ties binding her wrists. The friction sliced through the nylon, freeing her hands.
"Dominic! Down here!" Eleanor shouted through the swirling plaster dust.
Rappelling lines dropped through the jagged hole in the ceiling. Two black-clad tactical operators descended like shadows, their suppressed carbines coughing in rhythmic, deadly double-taps: *thwip-thwip, thwip-thwip.*
The disoriented mercenary near the door collapsed instantly.
Dr. Mercer scrambled toward the emergency exit, but Eleanor leaped forward, tackling the doctor to the floor, driving her knee into the woman's lower back and pinning her wrists behind her neck.
"Move and I break your spine," Eleanor snarled into the doctor’s ear.
Dominic Vance hit the tiled floor, weapon raised, sweeping the room before sprinting straight to Olivia’s gurney. "Clear! Room is secure!"
"Olivia!" Eleanor let go of Mercer and scrambled to the bed, using Miller’s knife to sever the leather restraints holding Olivia down.
Olivia gasped, sitting up and clutching her stomach, trembling violently. Tears of relief streamed down her dust-covered cheeks as she threw her arms around Eleanor's neck. "Eleanor... you did it... you saved us..."
"Not yet," Dominic said urgently, hooking his arm under Olivia’s shoulder to help her down from the gurney. "Pendelton has an entire secondary security platoon stationed in the perimeter woods. When that charge blew the roof, their perimeter alarms went off. We have three minutes before this whole facility is surrounded by heavy armor."
"Where is Ethan?" Olivia cried, her voice cracking as Dominic wrapped a heavy tactical parka around her shivering shoulders.
"He went to secure the boardroom and extract the biometric override codes," Dominic said, handing Eleanor a sidearm. "He’s inbound by helicopter right now. But we have to make it to the extraction point at the north tree line. The blizzard just hit."
They hurried out of the ruined surgical suite, stepping over the unconscious forms of Pendelton’s security team.
They emerged into the freezing night air of the Hudson Valley.
A brutal early-winter blizzard had descended over Westchester County. Gale-force winds whipped blinding sheets of snow across the overgrown grounds of the abandoned Vanderbilt Annex. The snow was already ankle-deep, swallowing the sound of their boots as they moved toward the black silhouette of the surrounding pine forest.
Suddenly, headlights flared through the blinding white squall.
Three armored SUVs roared over the crest of the hill, their high-intensity searchlights cutting through the blizzard, sweeping across the snow until the blinding beams locked onto Olivia, Eleanor, and Dominic.
Over the vehicle loudspeakers, Arthur Pendelton’s amplified voice cut through the howling wind:
"Surrender the girl, Vance! You have nowhere to run! The woods are mined, and the airspace is closed!"
Gunfire erupted from the lead SUV—heavy, armor-piercing rounds that shredded the snow around their feet and sparked violently against the frozen tree trunks.
"Get behind the stone wall! Down!" Dominic yelled, shoving Olivia and Eleanor behind the remnants of an old decorative granite barrier that bordered the estate's carriage path.
Dominic leaned out, firing controlled bursts from his rifle, but the armored windshields of the approaching SUVs barely cracked under the impact. The heavy vehicles continued their slow, unstoppable advance, their heavy tires grinding through the snow, closing the distance to thirty yards.
"Dominic, my gun is empty!" Eleanor shouted, racking the slide of the empty Glock.
Olivia huddled in the freezing mud, her hands clamped over her belly, whispering a desperate prayer into the screaming wind: "Ethan... please... Ethan..."
Above the roar of the blizzard and the rattle of assault rifles, a new sound tore through the sky.
A sound like tearing metal.
A twin-engine Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter plunged through the low cloud deck, its navigation lights off, coming in twenty feet above the tree line.
From the open side door of the descending war machine, a massive high-intensity spotlight clicked on, bathing Arthur Pendelton’s lead SUV in blinding white light.

And standing in the open doorway, strapped into a gunner's harness with an M240 machine gun locked in his grip, was Ethan Sterling.
