Chapter 96 - The Sovereign Ransom

The red laser beams danced across the shattered glass and marble floor like a swarm of venomous insects.

Thomas stared at the crimson dots converging on his chest, his breath catching in his throat. His aristocratic arrogance melted away in a single, humiliating second, leaving behind only the pathetic, quivering coward he had always been.

"No..." Thomas whimpered, lowering his gold pistol as his knees buckled. "The Council... Mother... she swore I would sit at the head of the table..."

"Your mother never cared about you, Thomas," Ethan said, not taking his eyes off the perimeter windows. "To Victoria, you were always just an expensive blunt instrument. A distraction while she positioned her real assets."

Outside, the heavy thrum of approaching armored personnel carriers shook the ground.

Searchlights flared to life through the dense fog, blindingly bright, illuminating the intricate ironwork of the conservatory terrace.

A voice, magnified through an external military-grade megaphone, boomed across the estate, reverberating through the shattered glass dome.

"ATTENTION OCCUPANTS OF BLACKWOOD RIDGE MANOR. THIS FACILITY HAS BEEN DESIGNATED A SPECIAL CONTAINMENT ZONE UNDER EXECUTIVE DECREE NINE. CEASE ALL RESISTANCE. LAY DOWN YOUR WEAPONS AND STEP OUT ONTO THE TERRACE WITH YOUR HANDS RAISED."

Marcus crouched beside a fractured marble balustrade, peering through his thermal optic.

"They’ve set up two .50-caliber machine gun nests on the north lawn," Marcus hissed. "They aren't looking for a surrender. The moment anyone walks onto that terrace, they turn them into mist."

Olivia stepped up beside Ethan, her jaw set, her fists clenched.

She picked up a dropped Glock 17 from the floor, racked the slide with practiced efficiency, and checked the chamber.

"We fight our way through the cellar tunnels," Olivia said, her voice shaking slightly with residual shock, but her eyes burning with lethal determination. "Charles built an escape route through the wine vaults leading down to the river landing."

"The cellar tunnels are already compromised," Thomas blurted out, crawling on his hands and knees toward Ethan like a beaten dog. "Mother... she had the schematics! She knows about the wine vaults! That’s where the Sovereign Ledger is buried!"

Ethan looked down at his brother with disgust, but his mind was already calculating trajectories, blast radiuses, and escape corridors.

"The Sovereign Ledger," Ethan repeated, his voice dangerously low. "Where is it, Thomas?"

"Sub-level four," Thomas stammered, pointing frantically toward the bronze elevator shaft at the back of the conservatory. "Behind the blast door in the old boiler room! Mother said the Council’s strike team has orders to secure the ledger before leveling the house!"

Ethan looked at Marcus.

"If the ledger is their objective," Ethan murmured, "that buys us our window."

"How?" Olivia asked, stepping closer to Ethan, her hand brushing his arm.

"The strike team won't detonate the perimeter charges while their recovery unit is inside retrieving the book," Ethan explained. "They need that physical ledger intact. It contains sixty years of blackmail on three sitting Supreme Court justices and forty percent of the Senate. If it burns, the Council loses their leverage over the entire federal government."

Suddenly, the glass windows along the eastern corridor shattered.

Heavy smoke canisters arced through the air, hissing violently as thick, suffocating CS gas began pouring into the room.

"Breach!" Marcus roared, raising his rifle.

A hail of high-caliber automatic fire tore through the conservatory.

Marble statues shattered into powdery white clouds. Crystal chandeliers swayed violently, rain of glass crystals raining down like hail.

Ethan shoved Olivia behind the massive marble base of a Roman column, shielding her body with his own as heavy rounds cratered the stone inches from his head.

"Marcus! Suppressive fire on the east archway!" Ethan commanded over the deafening roar of gunfire. "Thomas, get up! MOVE!"

Thomas scrambled across the floor, sobbing hysterically as bullets chewed through the antique parquet flooring around his heels.

Ethan fired two controlled bursts into the advancing smoke, catching a breacher in the chest plate and sending him crashing backward through the double doors.

"To the elevator shaft!" Ethan shouted. "Go! GO!"

They moved in a tight tactical diamond—Marcus leading the point, Olivia in the center with Ethan covering their rear, and Thomas stumbling along like dead weight.

They plunged into the service corridor just as a shoulder-fired rocket slammed into the conservatory behind them.

The shockwave tore through the hallway.

The pressure wave threw Ethan against the wall, his ears ringing with high-pitched feedback, the smell of cordite and burning drywall filling his lungs.

The entire west wing of the grand conservatory collapsed into a roaring inferno of falling timber and twisted iron.

"Down the stairs!" Ethan coughed, pulling Olivia to her feet. "The power grid is fried! The elevator won't run!"

They descended into the freezing, subterranean darkness beneath Blackwood Ridge Manor.

Down, down, through spiral iron staircases, past century-old brick foundations, leaving the sounds of the war above behind them, descending into the belly of the beast.

Here, sixty feet below the earth, the air was damp and smelled of ancient stone, sulfur, and rot.

At the bottom of the spiral stairs stood a massive, circular blast door forged from solid naval armor steel.

Above the heavy wheel lock, carved into the granite lintel, was a single Latin phrase:

*SI VIS PACEM, PARA BELLUM.*

"This is it," Thomas whispered, his teeth chattering uncontrollably in the damp cold. "The vault. The ledger is inside."

Ethan approached the wheel lock. Beside it was a biometric scanner from the late 1990s—antiquated, heavy, and analog.

"It requires a dual cipher," Ethan realized, examining the interface. "Charles didn't build this for one son."

He looked at Thomas.

"Two handprints," Ethan said. "Blood of the Patriarch. Both heirs, or the vault floods with hydrocyanic gas."

Thomas swallowed hard, looking at the biometric scanner like it was an electric chair.

"And what happens when we open it, Ethan?" Thomas whispered, his eyes wide with terror. "What if the truth inside that room kills us anyway?"

May you like

"The truth is already killing us, Thomas," Ethan said coldly, grabbing his brother’s trembling hand and slamming it onto the right-hand scanner.

"Now press."
