Chapter 93 - The Traitor's Confession

Ethan didn't pull the trigger. Death was too quick, too generous a gift for Alan Thorne.

Instead, Ethan brought the butt of the heavy pistol down across Thorne’s temple, knocking the corrupt physician instantly into the black mud.

Marcus arrived three seconds later, his combat boots crunching violently over the wet gravel, rifle raised at low-ready.

"Clear!" Marcus shouted, quickly sweeping the abandoned weigh station before dropping to one knee beside Ethan. "Is she alright?"

Ethan carefully unlatched the top vent of the transport incubator.

Grace was screaming now, her tiny face flushed bright red, her miniature fists flailing against the sterile swaddling.

With trembling, blood-flecked hands, Ethan lifted his daughter into his arms.

The contrast was staggering—his massive, calloused palms, stained with soot and rain, cradling a five-pound infant whose skin was soft as silk.

As soon as Ethan tucked her against his chest inside his heavy wool coat, sheltering her from the freezing sleet, her wails softened into rhythmic, hiccuping whimpers.

She recognized his scent. She recognized the steady, thumping beat of his heart.

"She’s unharmed," Ethan murmured, his voice thick with emotion. "Check the vehicle. Secure Thorne."

Marcus dragged Thorne’s limp body by the collar into the back of the ambulance, securing his wrists with heavy zip-ties before searching his tactical pockets.

A moment later, Marcus emerged, holding a high-grade military satellite transponder and a shattered vial of amber liquid.

"Paralytic," Marcus said, sniffing the broken glass with disgust. "He intended to incapacitate you before taking the child to the second extraction point."

"Where is the secondary convoy?" Ethan demanded, his eyes never leaving the perimeter treeline.

Marcus plugged Thorne’s satellite transponder into his portable decryption unit. The screen whirred, breaking through the multi-layered encryption in less than twenty seconds.

"Coordinates confirm what he said," Marcus reported grimly. "A secondary team picked up Olivia from the St. Jude service entrance forty minutes ago. They crossed the Bear Mountain Bridge at 11:15 PM."

"They took her directly to Blackwood Ridge," Ethan said.

"Yes. But look at these comms logs, Ethan." Marcus turned the screen toward him. "Thorne wasn't taking orders from Thomas."

Ethan froze. He slowly looked up from his daughter’s sleeping face.

"What did you say?"

"Look at the routing address on the encrypted commands," Marcus pointed to a alphanumeric string pulsing green on the terminal. "The command authorization didn't originate from Thomas’s burner network in Singapore."

"Where did it come from?"

"Sing Sing Correctional Facility," Marcus whispered, the words hanging like a death sentence in the frozen air. "Cell Block D. The maximum-security psychiatric ward."

Victoria.

The realization struck Ethan like a physical blow to the sternum.

His mother-in-law. The woman who had spent years mocking him, belittling him, treating him like an insect beneath her designer heels while he hid his sovereign identity.

The woman who had orchestrated Olivia’s original torment, who had tried to sell her own daughter to the highest bidder, and who had been locked away in a psychiatric prison after her empire collapsed.

She was still pulling the strings.

"She never broke," Ethan hissed, his teeth grinding together so hard his jaw ached. "The nervous breakdown in the courtroom... the institutionalization... it was all theater."

"She’s been coordinating with Thomas from inside," Marcus agreed, his face pale under the tactical lights. "She knew Thomas’s vanity would make him reckless. She let him play the warlord, knowing you two would tear each other to pieces."

"And while we bleed each other dry," Ethan finished the equation, "Victoria walks out of the ashes with everything."

In the back of the ambulance, Thorne groaned, spitting a mouthful of blood and teeth onto the metal floor.

He managed to prop himself up against the wheel well, glaring at Ethan through one swollen, purpling eye.

"You think... you're so smart, Sterling," Thorne rasped, his voice whistling through cracked ribs. "You think you conquered the world with your billions. But Victoria... Victoria is pure venom."

Ethan walked slowly toward the ambulance doors, keeping Grace shielded within his coat. He looked down at the broken doctor with cold, unblinking eyes.

"What is her endgame, Thorne?" Ethan asked softly. "Talk, and I leave you here for the state troopers. Refuse, and Marcus tests the paralytic on your femoral artery."

Thorne swallowed hard, the arrogance evaporating from his gaze, replaced by raw, primal terror.

"The Sovereign Ledger," Thorne wheezed. "It wasn't destroyed in Zurich. Victoria hid the master physical copy in the foundations of Blackwood Ridge thirty years ago."

"The ledger of Council sins," Ethan said.

"Every politician, every federal judge, every international banker who ever took a bribe from Charles Sterling is written in that book," Thorne confessed, trembling violently. "Thomas thinks he’s trading you for bearer bonds. But Victoria ordered the Council’s strike team to purge the entire estate at midnight."

"She’s going to kill Thomas too," Marcus muttered.

"She’s going to kill everyone," Thorne sobbed. "Thomas, Olivia, Ethan... the entire Council leadership. She’s burning the board to wipe the slate clean. Then her private militia breaks her out of Sing Sing tomorrow morning, and she assumes total control of the sovereign trust as the sole surviving matriarch!"

Ethan looked down at his watch.

11:32 PM.

Twenty-eight minutes until midnight.

Twenty-eight minutes until Blackwood Ridge became a slaughterhouse.

"Marcus," Ethan said, turning away from the ambulance.

"Sir?"

"Call Captain Bennett at the airfield," Ethan ordered, his voice ringing with absolute, terrifying clarity. "Prep the Black Hawk. I don't care about FAA flight corridors or civilian radar. We fly straight over the Hudson."

"And the baby?" Marcus asked gently.

Ethan looked down at Grace. She had drifted into a deep, peaceful sleep, nestled safely against his chest, completely unaware of the monsters circling her family.

"Grace goes to the safehouse with Sarah and a full tactical squad," Ethan said, his voice softening for a fraction of a second before hardening into stone. "And then, Marcus..."

May you like

Ethan looked up into the stormy northern sky, where the dark silhouette of the mountains loomed in the distance.

"We go to Blackwood Ridge, and we end this dynasty once and for all."
