Chapter 80 - The Edge of the Abyss

Ethan’s smile was not one of relief or triumph; it was the cold, terrifying smile of a man who had anticipated every move on the board three steps before his opponent had even touched a piece.

"Press it, Victoria," Ethan said calmly.

Victoria’s thumb froze against the titanium keycard’s sensor. Her good eye narrowed, suspicion instantly warring with her madness. "What did you say?"

"I said, press the switch," Ethan repeated, taking another slow, measured step forward until he was standing directly against the gallery rail, looking down into her scarred, ruined face. "Upload the liquidation protocol. Trigger the Erebus sequence."

"You think I'm bluffing?" she screeched, her voice cracking. "I will bankrupt this entire hemisphere! I will leave you and that pregnant whore with nothing but the clothes on your backs!"

"You can't bankrupt an entity that no longer exists, Victoria," Ethan said smoothly.

From behind Ethan, Olivia stepped forward, holding up a sleek, blue leather portfolio stamped with the official seal of the Swiss Federal Banking Commission.

"At four o'clock this morning," Olivia announced, her clear, crystalline voice cutting through the tense, gun-drawn silence of the courtroom, "the Cantonal Court of Zurich, acting on an emergency international petition filed jointly by Vance & Sterling and the Swiss Attorney General, declared the entire 1990 Sterling Sovereign Trust Charter null and void due to foundational fraud."

Victoria’s breath caught in her throat. "That's... that's impossible. No foreign court has jurisdiction over the sovereign trust!"

"They do when the founder of the trust was victim to an international criminal conspiracy," Arthur Vance interjected, stepping up beside Ethan. "All assets, all four hundred billion dollars in equity, patents, and municipal bonds, were legally transferred under emergency federal receivership into a newly established sovereign entity: *The Mary & Charles Sterling Memorial Trust*."

Ethan leaned in, his gray eyes burning like molten steel.

"The Erebus Protocol is connected to an empty shell, Victoria. You're holding a detonator to an abandoned vault. The moment you press that button, the only thing that happens is an automated alert sent directly to Interpol confirming your physical location."

Victoria stared down at the titanium keycard in her hand. Her fingers began to tremble with uncontrollable, violent spasms. The realization crashed over her with the force of an avalanche: thirty years of manipulation, thirty years of blackmail, murder, and theft—all of it had been rendered completely, utterly worthless in the span of six hours.

"No..." she whimpered, the monstrous arrogance draining from her posture, leaving only a broken, disfigured old woman standing in the aisle of a public court. "No, Charles... you couldn't have..."

"Charles didn't do this, Victoria," Ethan whispered, his voice cold as a winter grave. "I did."

Judge Miller’s heavy gavel struck the sound block with the force of an executioner's axe.

"Marshals!" Judge Miller thundered. "Take Victoria Sterling and Julian Sterling into immediate federal custody without bail on charges of treason, corporate espionage, grand larceny, and attempted murder!"

The federal marshals moved instantly. The three remaining contractors, realizing their paymaster had lost everything, dropped their weapons to the floor and raised their hands in surrender.

Two marshals pinned Julian Sterling against the defense table, clicking steel cuffs around his wrists as he wept hysterically, begging for immunity. Another pair of officers moved toward Victoria, gently but firmly wrenching the carbon-fiber cane and the useless keycard from her grasp.

As the steel cuffs clicked around her blistered wrists, Victoria didn't look at the marshals. She twisted her neck, glaring at Olivia with an expression of pure, concentrated evil.

"You think you've won, little girl?" Victoria spat, her voice a ragged hiss as she was hauled backward down the marble aisle. "You think you're safe? You have no idea what Charles buried in the foundation... you have no idea what is coming for your child!"

"Get her out of my courtroom," Judge Miller ordered coldly.

The heavy oak doors swung shut behind Victoria, cutting off her hysterical screams.

The courtroom remained frozen for three seconds, before an eruption of deafening applause and cheers swept from the gallery. Reporters flooded into the aisles, cameras flashing rapidly, capturing the historic moment: Ethan Vance Sterling, standing tall beside his wife, having completely destroyed the corruption that had poisoned his family’s dynasty for half a century.

Sarah Vance wept openly, pressing her hands against Ethan’s cheeks, looking into the eyes of her sister’s son. "She’s at peace now, Ethan. Mary is finally at peace."

Ethan wrapped his arms around Sarah, holding his aunt tightly against his chest, feeling the deep, generational wound finally begin to close.

When he stepped back, he turned to Olivia. Her face was flushed, her hazel eyes brimming with tears of overwhelming relief. Ethan reached out, cupping her face in his hands, leaning down to press his forehead against hers.

"It’s over, Liv," Ethan whispered, his voice thick with raw emotion. "We did it. Our baby is safe. The company is safe."

Olivia smiled, letting out a breathless laugh as she rested her hands against his chest. "You did it, Ethan. You brought Charles home."

Suddenly, Olivia’s breath hitched sharply. Her smile vanished, replaced by a sudden, intense spasm of pain. She gasped, her knees buckling beneath her.

"Olivia!" Ethan caught her instantly, wrapping his arms around her waist as she leaned heavily against him, her knuckles clutching his jacket with white-hot intensity.

"Ethan..." she groaned, her voice strained, beads of cold sweat immediately breaking out across her forehead. "The baby... something’s wrong. It’s too early... the stress..."

"Marcus!" Ethan roared across the courtroom, his voice filled with a terror that no bomb or bullet had ever caused. "Call the medical team! Clear the street! Now!"

Marcus dashed toward the double doors, barking orders into his radio.

Ethan lifted Olivia into his arms, carrying her through the parting crowd of reporters and marshals like a wounded queen. Her head rested against his shoulder, her breaths coming in short, ragged gasps.

"Hold on, Liv," Ethan pleaded, his voice breaking as he kicked open the courtroom doors and sprinted into the rotunda toward the emergency elevators. "Stay with me. Just hold on."

As they reached the private executive elevator, Marcus’s tactical phone began to vibrate violently. Marcus pulled it out, glanced at the encrypted screen, and froze mid-stride, his face draining of every drop of color.

"Boss," Marcus whispered, his voice trembling in a way Ethan had never heard in ten years of service.

"Not now, Marcus!" Ethan yelled, holding Olivia tightly as the elevator doors opened. "Get the paramedics!"

"Ethan, you have to hear this," Marcus said, his eyes wide with sheer, disbelieving shock. He turned the phone’s speaker toward Ethan.

Through the crackling, heavily encrypted frequency of a satellite line that had been dark for over a decade, a low, distinguished, deeply familiar voice echoed from the speaker:

*"Ethan... if you are hearing this transmission, Victoria has failed, and the Erebus protocol has exposed my location. Get Olivia to the safehouse immediately. Blackwood Ridge was not the target. They are coming for you from the shadows... my son."*

Ethan froze, the blood turning to absolute ice in his veins.

The voice on the phone belonged to Charles Sterling.
