Chapter 91 - The Screaming Void

The blinding white phosphorus burned into Ethan’s retinas, turning the world into a howling sheet of ash and chemical fire.
He didn't blink. He couldn't afford to lose a single second.
"Marcus!" Ethan screamed, his throat tearing raw against the toxic smoke billow. "To the cars! NOW!"
His boots slammed into the cracked concrete of the Queens warehouse floor. Behind him, the dying shell of his family's legacy crumbled into embers.
He didn't look back at the ruins. His entire universe had shrunk down to two beating hearts: Olivia and their newborn daughter, Grace.
Marcus burst through the emergency exit, shoulder-checking the rusted steel door off its hinges. His suppressed pistol was already drawn, scanning the perimeter.
"Perimeter team is down!" Marcus yelled over the screech of distant emergency sirens. "Thorne had medical security badges. He bypassed the St. Jude biometric grid entirely!"
Ethan vaulted into the passenger seat of the armored Cadillac Escalade. The twin-turbo engine roared to life before his door even clicked shut.
"Drive," Ethan snarled, his voice trembling with a terrifying, lethal stillness. "Cut through every red light between here and Manhattan."
Marcus floored the gas. The heavy SUV lurched forward, tires smoking as they tore onto the rain-slicked expressway.
Ethan grabbed the tactical comms console, slamming his thumb into the encrypted frequency for St. Jude’s Private Pavilion.
"Command team, report!" Ethan ordered. "Status on Room 402! Talk to me!"
Static hissed back through the speakers, sharp and cruel. Then came the ragged, gasping voice of Sergeant Vance, the lead operative Ethan had personally placed outside Olivia’s door.
"Mr. Sterling..." Vance wheezed, coughing up blood. "Gas... neuro-paralytic gas through the HVAC... Thorne... he walked right through the cleanroom..."
"Where are they, Vance?" Ethan demanded, his knuckles turning porcelain white against the dashboard.
"They took them... through the service freight elevator..." Vance whispered, his voice fading rapidly into unconsciousness. "Sub-basement three... black ambulance... no plates..."
The line went dead.
Ethan lowered the receiver. His chest felt hollowed out, as if a shotgun blast had torn away his ribs and left his lungs exposed to the freezing night air.
Only four hours ago, he had held Grace’s tiny, translucent hand in his palm. He had felt the frail, rhythmic flutter of her pulse against his thumb.
He had promised her she would never know the poison of the Sterling name. He had promised Olivia that their war was finally over.
*I lied,* Ethan thought, the realization burning through his veins like battery acid. *I brought the devil straight to their bedside.*
"ETA to the hospital is seven minutes," Marcus said, weaving violently through late-night traffic on the Queensboro Bridge.
"Don't go to the hospital," Ethan said suddenly.
Marcus glanced sideways, shock flashing across his scarred face. "Sir? Olivia and the baby—"
"They’re already gone," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a register of icy, razor-sharp certainty. "Thorne had this extraction planned before Thomas ever walked into the warehouse."
He tapped the screen of his tactical pad, bringing up the live telemetry of the hospital’s surrounding grid.
"Look at the traffic cams on First Avenue," Ethan commanded. "What do you see?"
Marcus narrowed his eyes at the glowing monitor mounted on the console. "Power outage. Three city blocks surrounding St. Jude’s are dark."
"It’s not an outage," Ethan said. "It’s a phased EMP dampener. Thomas bought city maintenance codes. He didn't just extract them; he scrubbed the grid to buy time."
"Then where did they take them?"
Ethan pulled the encrypted drive from his breast pocket—the one containing the cipher keys to the remaining thirty percent of the Zurich bearer bonds.
"Thomas gave me an ultimatum," Ethan murmured. "Blackwood Ridge Manor. Four hours. But Thomas doesn't play fair. He never has."
He looked up at Marcus, his eyes black and merciless in the dashboard's green glow.
"He's going to use them as leverage before we ever reach the gates," Ethan said. "He won't keep them together. It’s basic hostage doctrine."
"Divide and conquer," Marcus breathed, understanding dawning on his weathered face. "He keeps Olivia where he can torture you, and hides Grace where you can never find her."
"Call Roman," Ethan ordered coldly. "Tell him to wake every sleeper cell we have in the Tri-State area. If a private ambulance moves across the county line, I want it incinerated."
Marcus tapped his earpiece, barking coordinates into the secure military satellite channel.
Outside the tinted windows, the neon lights of Manhattan blurred into streaks of garish red and gold, reflecting off the damp asphalt like fresh blood.
Ethan leaned his head back against the leather seat, staring at the ceiling of the speeding vehicle.
His mind flashed to the hospital room feed Thomas had shown him.
The overturned bassinet. The small pink blanket crumpled on the cold linoleum floor.
A primal, ancient fury awoke inside his chest, tearing away every shred of civility, restraint, and humanity he had cultivated over the past decade.
He wasn't just a CEO protecting an empire anymore.
He was a father whose blood had been stolen from the cradle.
"Floor it, Marcus," Ethan whispered, his hand sliding down to the custom SIG Sauer P226 resting beside his knee.

"Let's go remind my brother what happens when you touch my family."
The SUV surged into the dark mouth of the Midtown Tunnel, disappearing into the subterranean shadows beneath the sleeping city.
