Chapter 25 - The Poisoned Legacy

By dawn, the storm had passed, leaving behind a gray, suffocating mist that clung to the valleys like a shroud. Inside the Sterling master study, the scene was one of controlled catastrophe.
Carter Ward was on a speakerphone conference with the chief justice of the Manhattan Commercial Division, while two junior associates from his firm franticly sorted through stacks of court filings spread across the Persian carpet.
"They filed an ex-parte stay at 2:15 AM in Albany," Carter said, rubbing his bloodshot eyes as he muted the phone. "Judge Holbrook signed it. Julian Vance had a team of top-tier litigators waiting in the lobby. Because Evelyn Vance has formally appeared claiming to be the primary surviving heir under the 1922 Charter, the court has placed the entirety of Sterling Global, the real estate holdings, and all domestic accounts into an emergency judicial conservatorship."
Ethan stood by the window, his arms crossed over his chest. He hadn't slept a second. His face was set like granite, the stubble along his jaw darkening his grim expression.
"Who is the conservator?" Ethan asked, his voice low and dangerous.
Carter looked down at his yellow legal pad, hesitating.
"Carter. Who did Holbrook appoint?"
"The Vance Trust Company," Carter answered quietly. "Represented by Julian Vance as the foreign receiver, and... Victoria."
Olivia, who had been sitting by Evelyn’s side on the leather sofa, looked up sharply. "Victoria? She was ousted from the board! She’s under investigation for document fraud!"
"The criminal investigation was halted by the federal stay," Carter explained, his voice thick with frustration. "Julian’s attorneys argued that Victoria was merely acting under duress from her mother and that as the sole remaining domestic direct descendant of the Vance line without a disputed birth certificate, she is the only legally competent party to oversee the estate assets until Evelyn’s identity is confirmed by state forensic geneticists."
"Which will take months," Olivia said, standing up, her hands clenching into fists. "They’re going to strip the accounts while the state tests DNA!"
"Worse," Evelyn said from the sofa. She had discarded the blanket. Her face, though worn, was frighteningly alert. "Victoria doesn't care about the company. Neither does Julian. They are going to trigger the default liquidation clause in the 1922 Charter."
Ethan turned around. "Explain."
"My grandfather Thomas was a paranoid man," Evelyn said, tapping her cane against the floor. "He wrote a poison pill into the charter. He stated that if the legal ownership of the company was ever contested between siblings or direct descendants for more than thirty consecutive days, the entirety of the corporate equity must be liquidated at auction, and the proceeds held in a blind Swiss escrow until the dispute is resolved."
Ethan’s eyes narrowed. "And Julian’s offshore fund, Ares Holdings, is already sitting in Zurich with cash reserves ready to buy the assets for pennies on the dollar."
"Precisely," Evelyn said. "They don't want to win the lawsuit, Ethan. They just need to keep the ownership in dispute for thirty days. Once the auction triggers, Sterling Global disappears. The factories, the real estate, the trusts... everything your father built, and everything my sister Eleanor bled for, will belong to Julian Vance."
"There is one way to stop it," Carter said suddenly, his eyes darting to a faded clause on page twelve of the charter copy.
Ethan walked over to the desk. "Speak."
"The poison pill has an exception," Carter said, pointing a trembling finger at the yellowed text. "Clause 44, Subsection C. The liquidation clause cannot be invoked if the primary Vance heir presents the Original physical Seal of Thomas Vance before the board of directors in a certified quorum."
"The original seal?" Olivia asked. "Where is it?"
Evelyn looked down at her hands, her voice dropping into a solemn murmur. "When Richard hid me in the White Mountains, he showed me the seal once. It is an eight-ounce block of carved lapis lazuli and platinum. Thomas carried it everywhere. Richard told me that before my mother Eleanor died, she hid it where Margaret would never dare look."
"Where?" Ethan demanded.
"In the family crypt," Olivia whispered, the blood draining from her cheeks as the memory hit her. "When my mother was buried... before the casket was closed, she asked for her childhood music box to be placed under her head, inside the burial vault. Margaret tried to take it from the casket, but Ethan... you were there. You were sixteen years old, and you told Margaret to keep her hands off Eleanor’s coffin."
Ethan’s mind flashed back fifteen years—the black umbrella, the torrential rain, his aunt Eleanor lying in white satin, and his teenage self stepping between a sneering Margaret and the open casket.

"The music box wasn't just a keepsake," Ethan realized, his heart hammering against his ribs. "The seal is inside the vault. In Eleanor’s tomb."
