Chapter 81 - The Ghost’s Directive

The world narrowed to the sound of Olivia’s shallow, ragged gasps and the phantom cadence of a dead man’s voice ringing through Marcus’s tactical phone.
"Ethan..." Olivia choked out, her fingers digging through his tailored jacket, her nails biting into his flesh through the silk lining. A dark crimson stain was beginning to bloom against the pale lace hem of her dress. "Ethan, the baby... it feels like fire..."
"I have you. Look at me, Liv, look at my eyes," Ethan commanded, his voice tight, vibrating with an animal desperation that tore through his aristocratic composure. He hoisted her into his arms, ignoring the blinding flashbulbs of the press pack screaming in the federal rotunda behind them. "Marcus, move! Clear the freight elevator! Call Dr. Thorne at the private pavilion—tell him full surgical prep right now!"
Marcus did not immediately move. The former tier-one operator stood frozen for a half-second, his jaw clenched so violently the muscles twitched beneath his skin, his eyes locked on the encrypted frequency displaying an untraceable alphanumeric string from Zurich.
*"Ethan,"* the voice from the receiver crackled again, rough as gravel, weighted with the unmistakable authority of Charles Sterling—a patriarch buried in the family mausoleum six years ago. *"Listen to me. The marshals on the perimeter have already been bought. Do not take the main avenue. Victoria was never the queen on this board; she was the bait. If you enter the lower concourse, you are walking into an execution corridor. Turn right. The maintenance sub-tunnel beneath the courthouse. Now!"*
The call went dead with a high-pitched digital hiss.
"Boss?" Marcus breathed, his hand hovering over his concealed sidearm. "Was that... is it a deepfake? An AI loop designed to redirect us?"
"I don't care if it's the devil himself," Ethan snarled, his heart hammering against his ribs as Olivia slumped against his chest, her forehead burning with fever, her breath coming in wheezing rattles. "Look at the hallway cameras on your tablet. Check the motorcade."
Marcus tapped the tactical screen strapped to his forearm. His breath caught. Two black Suburbans belonging to the federal escort detail had just pulled across the perimeter gate, boxing their primary armored limousine into the curb. Men in unmarked tactical gear were stepping out, not with standard sidearms, but with suppressed submachine guns tucked under heavy winter coats.
"The voice was right," Marcus whispered, terror and adrenaline stripping the hesitation from his face. "Main gate is blocked. It’s an ambush."
"Break the fire doors," Ethan ordered. "We take the service tunnel to the subway conduit."
Marcus drew his Glock, wrapped his jacket around the muzzle, and shattered the heavy industrial latch on the maintenance access door at the end of the corridor. Alarms wailed instantly, high and screeching, drowning out the shouting crowd behind them.
Ethan plunged into the damp, concrete belly of the federal complex, carrying Olivia. Cold air hit them, carrying the stench of rusted iron, stagnant storm run-off, and ancient steam pipes.
"Ethan," Olivia whispered, her eyelids fluttering, her lips turning a faint, terrifying shade of blue. "If... if you have to choose... the baby. You save our child. Promise me. Swear it to me on your mother’s grave."
"Don't you dare speak like that!" Ethan choked out, his vision blurring with furious tears as he ran through the dimly lit service tunnel, water splashing beneath his Italian leather oxfords. "You’re going to raise her with me. We survived Victoria, we survived Zurich, and we will survive this. Do you hear me? Stay awake! Keep your eyes on me!"
Behind them, the heavy steel door at the top of the stairwell slammed open. Heavy boots echoed on the metal grating.
"Sterling!" a voice shouted from the darkness above—cold, professional, without an ounce of law enforcement protocol. "Drop the package and surrender the female. Council orders!"
Marcus spun around, dropping to one knee at the junction of the tunnel, raising his weapon with steady, deadly precision. "Go, Ethan! Head for the sewer grate at 4th Street! The secondary medical van is three minutes out!"
"Marcus—"
"Go!" Marcus fired three double-taps into the darkness. Gunfire erupted in the narrow tunnel, muzzle flashes illuminating the dripping concrete like strobes of hellfire.

Ethan clamped his teeth together, pulled Olivia tighter against his chest, and ran into the blackness toward the faint daylight filtering through the storm grates of Lower Manhattan, Charles Sterling’s dying warning echoing in his mind: *They are coming for you from the shadows... my son.*
