Chapter 38 - Blood Against Blood

"What did she mean about Bermuda?" Ethan asked an hour later.
They were sitting in the secure rear suite of the American Consulate in Zurich, surrounded by bulletproof glass and armed Marine guards. Carter had used his diplomatic connections to secure emergency sanctuary while the cantonal police cleared the Sonnenberg Clinic.
On the mahogany conference table between them sat the titanium thumb drive, connected to a military-grade decryption console manned by an independent cyber-forensics specialist Carter had flown in from Frankfurt.
Olivia sat with her arms wrapped tightly around herself, her face pale, staring at the cold rain lashing against the consulate windows. "My mother... she had a private account in Hamilton. When I was nineteen, before my father lost his firm, she told me that no matter what happened to the family, we would always have our 'annuity.' I thought she meant an insurance payout."
"It wasn't an annuity," Carter said, looking up from his laptop screen as the green progress bar on the decryption reached one hundred percent. "My God. Ethan... look at this."
Ethan leaned over Carter’s shoulder.
The files inside the titanium drive were not just ledgers. They were transaction logs spanning thirty years, detailing a covert operational network funded by the Montague Syndicate.
And there, listed under the primary asset distribution ledger, was the name: *Eleanor Vance.*
"Eleanor?" Ethan muttered, his heart skipping a beat. "That was my grandmother’s name."
"No," Carter whispered, his hands trembling over the keyboard. "Not your grandmother. Look at the identity registry number, Ethan. The maiden name of Olivia’s mother... was Eleanor Vance."
The room seemed to tilt on its axis.
Olivia stood up so violently her chair tipped backward, crashing against the hardwood floor. "No. That’s impossible. My mother’s maiden name was Eleanor Ross! She was from Connecticut!"
"Ross was an alias," Carter said, spinning the laptop toward them.
On the screen was an old black-and-white passport photograph from 1982. The woman in the picture was undeniably Olivia’s mother—younger, with the same sharp, aristocratic nose and imperious jawline, but her legal name on the Swiss consular stamp read: *Eleanor Vance-Montague.*
"She’s Genevieve’s sister," Ethan breathed, the horror sinking into his marrow like liquid nitrogen. "Olivia... your mother is Genevieve’s younger sister."
Olivia backed away from the table, shaking her head in violent denial, her hands flying to her temples. "No... no, no, no! That would mean... Ethan, that would mean you and I..."
"Cousins," Carter murmured, his voice shaking.
"Wait," Ethan barked, his sharp analytical mind cutting through the blinding panic. "Stop. Look at the bloodline manifest. Look at the birth dates!"
Carter scrolled frantically down the legal tree.
"Genevieve was adopted," Ethan shouted, pointing at a sealed court order from the High Court of London, dated 1965. "Genevieve was not a biological Montague! She was brought in from an orphanage in Lyon by the old Lord Montague to act as a decoy heir! Eleanor—your mother—was the only true biological daughter of the bloodline!"
Olivia froze, her chest heaving, her eyes darting between the screen and Ethan. "Then... why did my mother live like a pariah in New York? Why did she let Julian’s family treat us like beggars?"
"Because Genevieve hunted her," Ethan said, the horrific tapestry finally unspooling in full view. "Your mother ran away from the syndicate thirty years ago. She changed her name to Ross, married your father, and tried to hide in America. But Genevieve found her. She bankrupted your father to force your mother into submission. And when Margaret offered Julian as a match for you... Genevieve approved it because it would have brought Eleanor’s daughter back under the syndicate’s control."
"And then you stepped in," Olivia whispered, the tears finally breaking through, spilling down her cheeks. "You married me instead."
"Richard orchestrated the marriage," Ethan realized, his voice trembling with a mixture of awe and fury. "Richard didn't pair us together by accident. He knew who you were. He knew who I was. He paired the son he stole with the niece Genevieve wanted to destroy. He knew that if I loved you, I would burn the entire world before I let them touch you."
A knock rattled the consulate door. Marcus entered, his face dark, holding a red secure-line phone.
"Mr. Vance," Marcus said heavily. "It’s New York. Margaret Sterling just posted bail. Her legal fees were wired from an offshore account in the Cayman Islands ten minutes ago."
Ethan looked at the phone, then at Olivia. The pieces were all on the board now. The trap was set.

"She’s going after Olivia’s mother," Ethan said. "Marcus, prep the plane. We're going home to finish this."
