Chapter 79 - The Matriarch's Resurrection

The court officers immediately drew their sidearms, shouting commands that were swallowed whole by the sudden, terrifying silence that fell over the room.

Standing in the doorway, framed by the cold fluorescent light of the courthouse rotunda, was Victoria Sterling.

A collective gasp sucked the air from the gallery.

She was unrecognizable from the pristine, diamond-draped society queen who had ruled Manhattan high society for four decades. The left side of her face was a landscape of raw, grafted skin and jagged burn scars from the thermite explosion at Blackwood Ridge. Her left eye was clouded milky white, fixed in an unnatural, lidless stare. She was clad in a tailored black velvet coat that concealed her left arm, supported by a heavy carbon-fiber cane gripped in her right hand.

Beside her stood four private security contractors wearing black suits with concealed submachine guns, their hands resting menacingly beneath their jackets.

"Victoria..." Julian whispered, his voice cracking with absolute terror.

Judge Miller rose to his feet, pointing his gavel at the doorway. "Bailiffs! Disarm those men and arrest that woman! She is under federal indictment!"

Victoria ignored the judge completely. Her single good amethyst eye was locked entirely on Ethan. She hobbled forward, the rhythmic *thump-click* of her cane against the marble aisle echoing like the ticking of a death watch.

"Did you really think a courtroom gavel could dismantle what I built, Ethan?" Victoria rasped, her voice damaged by smoke inhalation, sounding like dry leaves scraped across asphalt. "You win the blood test. How touching. The alley boy proves he has the sovereign bloodline after all."

Ethan stepped in front of Olivia, Arthur, and Sarah Vance, shielding them with his broad frame. Marcus Cole immediately closed the distance, his hand inside his jacket resting on the grip of his customized .45.

"Step down, Victoria," Ethan said, his voice deadly quiet. "You survived the fire, but you won't survive federal prison. You are surrounded by federal marshals. It’s over."

Victoria threw her head back and laughed—a wet, rattling sound that made the hairs on the back of Ethan’s neck stand on end.

"Prison? For me?" She sneered, stopping just outside the wooden gallery rail. "I am the Sovereign Trust, Ethan! I am the architect of every shell corporation, every private treaty, every offshore clearinghouse that keeps this country’s industrial sector from collapsing! Do you really think I didn't prepare for the day Charles’s ghost came back to haunt me?"

She pulled a small, black titanium keycard from her pocket and held it up between two blistered fingers.

"What is that?" Arthur Vance demanded, his voice shaking.

"This is the master kill-switch to the Sovereign Depository in Zurich," Victoria whispered, her gaze sweeping across the terrified trustees sitting in the gallery. "Thirty years ago, when Charles began to suspect my manipulations, I established the *Erebus Protocol*. Every share of Sterling Global, every patent, every municipal bond holding four hundred billion dollars in pension assets is collateralized through a single Swiss automated liquidation algorithm."

Ethan’s eyes narrowed. "You wouldn't. If you execute that protocol, you destroy your own wealth."

"My wealth?" Victoria hissed, her scarred lip curling in psychotic delight. "If I cannot sit on the sovereign throne, Ethan... then there will be no throne left to claim. In precisely sixty seconds, that keycard uploads an irrecoverable liquidation command to the Swiss clearing network. Every asset of Sterling Global will be dumped onto the international markets for a penny on the dollar. The stock will crash to absolute zero. The pension funds will vaporize. The empire Charles built will cease to exist before the noon bell rings on Wall Street."

Panic erupted in the gallery. Trustees leaped from their seats, screaming at Julian and Victoria. Reporters scrambled over the benches toward the exits, desperate to file the catastrophic financial alert.

"You're insane," Ethan said, taking a deliberate step toward the rail.

"Stay back!" one of Victoria’s lead contractors shouted, drawing a submachine gun from beneath his coat.

Before the gunman could raise the barrel, Marcus Cole drew his weapon with blinding speed. A deafening gunshot cracked through the courtroom ceiling, plaster raining down as the marshal’s bullet shattered the contractor’s wrist, sending the submachine gun skittering across the floor.

The other three contractors drew their weapons, but federal marshals swarmed from the side chambers, weapons drawn, creating a deadly standoff inside the historic courtroom.

"Drop your weapons!" the chief marshal bellowed. "Drop them now!"

Victoria didn't even look at the guns. She stared directly into Ethan’s eyes, her thumb hovering over the activation switch on the titanium keycard.

"Choose, Ethan," she whispered, her voice dripping with venom. "Bow before me. Sign the conservatorship over to me right now on that judge’s bench... or watch me burn your father’s legacy into eternal ash."

Ethan looked at the keycard. He looked at the scarred, monstrous woman who had stolen his mother, tormented his father, and spent thirty years turning human lives into disposable pawns.

Then, Ethan did something Victoria never anticipated.

May you like

He smiled.
