Chapter 76 - The Stolen Bloodline

The concussive blast of the stun grenade blew the apartment’s lace curtains to ribbons and filled the narrow living room with eye-searing white smoke.

Ethan’s ears rang with a high-pitched scream, but his reflexes moved purely on combat instinct. He shielded Olivia’s trembling body beneath his own, pressing Sarah Vance flat against the floorboards behind the heavy iron radiator.

Through the pulverized window frame, two grappling hooks clattered against the sill. Black-clad operators wearing tactical helmets and night-vision goggles vaulted into the room, their suppressed submachine guns sweeping the smoke.

*Thwip! Thwip!*

Marcus Cole fired from behind the kitchen counter. The lead operator took two rounds to the ceramic chest plate, stumbling backward into his partner. The second man returned fire, high-velocity rounds tearing through the plaster walls and shredding Sarah’s framed family photographs into confetti.

"Ethan! Rear fire escape!" Marcus shouted over the gunfire, ejecting an empty magazine and slapping a fresh one home. "Move! I'll hold the landing!"

"No one gets left behind!" Ethan yelled back. He gripped Sarah by the arm, lifting the elderly woman to her feet with effortless power, while wrapping his other arm firmly around Olivia’s waist.

Ethan kicked open the rotting wooden door that led to the tenement’s rear service stairs. The heavy concrete steps were slick with moisture. Behind them, the sharp crackle of Marcus’s defensive fire echoed through the building, answered by the heavy, disciplined bursts of an elite paramilitary assault team.

These men weren't street thugs. Their movements, their suppressors, their tactical breaching cadence—it was the signature of Vanguard Global, the private military contractor previously funded exclusively through Victoria Sterling’s offshore shell company in Zurich.

*She isn't dead,* Ethan thought, his blood running cold as he guided Olivia down the stairs. *She was in that room. She directed this strike.*

They burst out of the rear service door into a narrow, mud-slicked alley behind the auto shop. Freezing rain pelted their faces.

Fifty feet away, blocking the mouth of the alley, sat a black tactical SUV with its high beams blindingly bright. The passenger door opened, and a tall, broad-shouldered man stepped out, raising an assault rifle directly at Ethan’s chest.

"Freeze! Don't move!" the mercenary barked.

Ethan didn't stop. He pushed Olivia and Sarah behind a steel dumpster, charged forward through the blinding headlights, and closed the distance in three violent strides.

Before the shooter could squeeze the trigger, Ethan’s right hand clamped onto the rifle barrel, forcing the muzzle downward into the pavement. A three-round burst chipped concrete at their feet. With his left fist, Ethan drove a devastating palm strike directly into the mercenary’s throat, followed by a knee strike to the man’s sternum that collapsed his tactical vest with a sickening crunch.

The operator dropped to his knees, gasping for air. Ethan wrenched the rifle from his grip, smashed the heavy stock across the man’s helmet, and threw the weapon into the dark.

From behind the SUV, a familiar, terrifying voice emerged from an external speaker mounted on the vehicle’s roof.

"Still fighting like a common stray dog, Ethan?"

Ethan stopped dead in his tracks. Rain dripped from his hair into his eyes as he stared at the heavily tinted rear window of the SUV.

The glass rolled down halfway, revealing the silhouette of a woman sitting in the shadows. Half of her face was wrapped in white medical gauze, the visible skin beneath red and blistered from the heat of the Blackwood Ridge explosion. But her amethyst eyes, glowing with psychopathic intensity, were unmistakable.

Victoria.

"You should have stayed buried in the rubble, Victoria," Ethan said, his voice flat, steady, and chillingly calm.

"I built this dynasty from nothing, you pathetic bastard," Victoria purred through the crack in the glass. "You think you can run to this rat-infested slum, find a dried-up old woman, and rewrite history? You have no legal standing. Julian has already delivered the Swiss sterility depositions to Judge Miller’s chambers. In twenty-four hours, the Sovereign Trust will be liquidated, and you will be prosecuted for grand larceny."

"You lied to Charles," Ethan said, taking a step toward the SUV. "You stole Mary Vance’s baby. You framed her, locked her away, and spent thirty years pretending you were an empress while Charles drank himself to death mourning the woman you murdered."

Victoria’s remaining eye widened, then curled into a grotesque, mocking sneer.

"And who is going to believe you?" she hissed. "A Brooklyn seamstress with a box of old love letters? The court demands scientific proof, Ethan! Biological lineage! And Mary Vance was buried in a municipal cemetery five years ago. There is no DNA to exhume. No chain of custody. You are legally, scientifically, and permanently... an imposter."

"She’s wrong, Ethan!" Sarah Vance shouted from behind the dumpster, stepping out into the blinding glare of the high beams, defying the mercenaries.

Victoria’s gaze snapped to Sarah, her lips curling in disgust. "Shut your mouth, you peasant, or I'll have my men leave you in the gutter where your sister died."

"Mary kept your bloodline safe, you monster!" Sarah screamed back into the rain. "When Charles visited Mary in that secret Greenwich Village apartment, they went to a private geneticist at Columbia Presbyterian to register the child’s paternal heritage before Charles left for Zurich! Mary knew you were a snake! The original cord blood from Ethan’s birth was preserved under a legal trust seal in the Columbia Medical Vault! It’s indexed under Charles Sterling’s private donor code!"

Victoria’s smug expression shattered. For the first time in thirty years, sheer, unadulterated panic flashed across her scarred face.

"Kill them," Victoria whispered into her radio. "Kill them all now!"

Before the remaining mercenaries could flank the alley, the thunderous roar of a heavy engine split the night.

Marcus Cole’s armored suburban crashed through the chain-link gate of the adjacent auto yard, plowing directly into the side of Victoria’s SUV with a metal-shrieking impact that spun the vehicle ninety degrees into the brick wall.

"Get in!" Marcus roared, throwing open the passenger doors.

Ethan didn't hesitate. He hoisted Sarah into the rear seat, pushed Olivia inside, and vaulted into the front cabin just as Victoria’s disoriented operators opened fire from the alley mouth. High-velocity rounds ricocheted harmlessly off the reinforced ballistic glass.

Marcus slammed the transmission into reverse, spun the wheel, and launched the heavy truck back out onto Nostrand Avenue, vanishing into the Manhattan-bound traffic.

Inside the cabin, Ethan breathed heavily, his heart hammering against his ribs. He turned to Sarah Vance.

"Sarah," Ethan said, his voice shaking with intense urgency. "The Columbia Medical Vault... is that sample still viable?"

Sarah nodded, wiping rain and tears from her weathered face. "The trust fees were paid fifty years in advance by Charles himself before he died. The sample is locked under Charles’s sovereign crest. If you can open that vault before tomorrow morning... you will hold the indisputable genetic proof that Charles Sterling is your father."

Ethan looked across at Olivia, who reached out and gripped his hand with all the strength left in her body.

"Then we don't go to court tomorrow with empty hands," Ethan said, his eyes burning with lethal determination. "We go with the truth that tears Victoria’s empire to the ground."
