Chapter 77 - The Boardroom Siege

Dawn broke over Manhattan not with sunlight, but with a bruised, slate-gray sky heavy with impending snow.

At 8:00 AM, the ground-floor plaza of the Sterling Tower on Fifth Avenue was besieged by over fifty journalists, television news crews, and financial analysts. News of the devastation at Blackwood Ridge and Julian Sterling’s emergency petition to seize the sovereign trust had leaked to the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg overnight. The headlines scrolling across the outdoor ticker were brutal:

*STERLING GLOBAL IN FREEFALL: PATERNITY SCANDAL THREATENS $40B DYNASTY.*

*CHAIRMAN ETHAN STERLING FACES REMOVAL AHEAD OF PROBATE SHOWDOWN.*

On the executive floor, Julian Sterling stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, sipping espresso from a gold-rimmed porcelain cup. Behind him, four uniformed New York State marshals stood waiting, armed with court-ordered provisional seizure writs signed by Judge Miller at 6:30 that morning.

"Everything is in order, Counselor?" Julian asked, turning to his lead attorney, an oily, silver-haired litigator named Preston Bradley.

"The provisional writ freezes all of Ethan’s personal and corporate accounts effective immediately," Bradley said with a satisfied smirk. "The Surrogate Court convenes at ten o'clock. If Ethan Vance fails to produce a certified direct paternal match by the time the gavel falls, the conservatorship automatically transfers to you, Julian. The marshals have orders to physically remove him and his wife from the premises if they attempt to enter."

"Excellent," Julian said, his eyes glittering with cold malice. "Thirty years of waiting for my brother’s shadow to clear. Today, the rightful Sterling takes the chair."

The private executive elevator chimed with a crisp, electronic ring.

The brass-trimmed doors slid open.

Julian’s smile widened, expecting to see a defeated young man accompanied by process servers. Instead, out stepped Olivia Sterling alone.

She wore a charcoal tailored wool dress beneath a long, immaculate winter coat. Her posture was aristocratic, her chin tilted up, radiating an icy composure that caused the state marshals to instinctively straighten their backs. Behind her walked two junior associates from Vance & Sterling Legal, carrying three heavy leather document cases.

Julian chuckled, walking toward her with exaggerated sympathy. "Olivia, my dear. I expected your husband. Did he lack the courage to face his eviction? Or has the street rat already fled back to the gutters of Brooklyn?"

Olivia stopped ten feet from Julian. She looked at him with an expression of such cold, searing contempt that Julian’s condescending grin faltered.

"Ethan isn't running from you, Julian," Olivia said clearly, her voice echoing off the Italian marble floor. "He is currently executing Charles’s final sovereign instructions. And I am here to deliver the formal response of the Chief Executive."

"There is no Chief Executive!" Julian snapped, motioning to the marshals. "Marshals, present the court order! Mrs. Vance, you have five minutes to clear your personal belongings from the penthouse suite. Your corporate credit cards have been deactivated. Your security passes are null and void."

The senior marshal stepped forward, his expression apologetic but firm. "Mrs. Sterling, I have an emergency provisional writ signed by Judge Miller. Until the paternity hearing concludes, all executive privileges—"

"Read Section 12-B of that writ, Officer," Olivia interrupted calmly.

The marshal paused, glancing down at the document.

"Section 12-B," Olivia recited from memory, her gaze fixed entirely on Julian’s increasingly pale face. "‘In the event of an disputed executive conservatorship, the seated corporate Secretary—a position held by myself under unanimous board ratification last November—retains temporary administrative veto power over all personnel evictions until the presiding judge hears oral arguments.’"

Bradley, Julian’s lawyer, rushed forward. "That is an administrative technicality! It holds no weight once the consanguinity clause—"

"It holds weight for the next ninety minutes," Olivia countered with razor-sharp precision. "Which means neither you, nor your client, nor your private mercenaries have the legal authority to touch a single file on this floor."

Julian’s face twisted into an ugly snarl. He took two aggressive strides toward Olivia, his hand rising to point an accusing finger directly in her face.

"You insolent little social climber! Do you really think you can delay the inevitable? When we strip that fraud of his name, what do you think happens to you and that bastard in your belly? You'll be begging on the subway before this year is out!"

Olivia didn't flinch. She stepped forward, closing the distance between them until she was staring directly into Julian’s bloodshot eyes.

"My child will bear the name of Charles Sterling’s rightful son," Olivia whispered, her voice dropping into a register that made Julian’s skin prickle. "And when the truth of what you and Victoria did to Charles and Mary Vance is read into the public record today, Julian... you won't be taking the chairman’s seat. You'll be trading that Savile Row suit for an orange jumpsuit at Rikers Island."

Julian’s mouth opened, but no words came out. The absolute certainty in her eyes terrified him.

Before he could respond, Bradley’s phone began to vibrate violently in his pocket. The lawyer pulled it out, glanced at the caller ID, and his face turned the color of chalk.

"Julian," Bradley whispered, his voice trembling. "It’s our contact at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center."

Julian snatched the phone from Bradley’s hand, pressing it to his ear. "Speak! Did you secure the medical vault?"

The voice on the other end was frantic, nearly unintelligible over the background sirens. *"Mr. Sterling... we were too late. A federal marshal arrived twenty minutes ago with a national security warrant signed by the Attorney General’s office. Ethan Vance and Marcus Cole were with them. They retrieved the cryo-sealed cord blood from 1991. The genetic forensic team is already running the sovereign sequence at the federal lab!"*

Julian’s hand dropped limp to his side. The phone slipped from his fingers, bouncing across the polished marble floor.

Olivia looked at the shattered man before her, adjusted the lapels of her coat, and turned toward the boardroom doors.

"The Surrogate Court convenes at ten o'clock, Julian," Olivia said smoothly over her shoulder. "Don't be late. Ethan has a few surprises waiting for you."
