Chapter 13 - Whispers in the Dark

The Vance estate fell under a heavy blanket of fog as night settled over the Hudson Valley.

Security patrols had doubled, their flashlights cutting narrow beams through the dense mist surrounding the perimeter fence.

Inside the master suite, Elara paced the floor, holding little Maya against her chest in a tight, protective embrace.

The baby whimpered softly, sensing the tension radiating from her mother’s rigid posture.

"Shh, baby, mama’s here," Elara whispered, gently rocking back and forth. "No one is going to touch you."

Julian walked in from the adjoining dressing room, wearing dark casual clothes and carrying an encrypted tablet.

Seeing the raw terror in Elara’s eyes broke something deep inside his chest.

"The legal filing is garbage, Elara," Julian said, stepping forward to wrap his arms around both of them. "It’s a desperate stall tactic to rattle us."

"She’s calling our daughter a bastard, Julian," Elara said, her eyes flashing with a mixture of tears and venomous rage.

"She’s demanding a court-ordered DNA test to humiliate you," Julian replied, his voice heavy with guilt. "She knows she can't win, but she wants the press to devour us."

Elara shook her head, pulling back slightly to look directly into his eyes.

"It’s not just the press I’m worried about," Elara said, lowering her voice to a chilling whisper.

Julian frowned. "What happened?"

Elara led him toward the nursery down the corridor, her hand trembling in his grip.

She pointed toward the heavy French doors leading out to the second-story private balcony.

"When I came up from dinner, the deadbolt was unlocked," Elara said, pointing to the brass latch.

Julian stepped onto the terrace immediately, looking over the railing into the foggy garden below.

The stone balcony was empty, but as Julian leaned closer to the door frame, a faint scent caught his nostrils.

It was the unmistakable, suffocating fragrance of French lavender and vintage ambergris.

It was the bespoke perfume his mother had worn every single day of his life.

Julian felt a cold shiver run straight down his spine into his gut.

"She was here," Julian breathed, his voice dropping into dangerous silence.

"Inside our home?" Elara gasped, clutching Maya tighter to her chest.

Julian turned around, his eyes burning with absolute, deadly certainty.

"Someone on our payroll opened that door," Julian said. "We have a traitor inside these walls."
