Chapter 22 - The Unraveling Web

Three weeks passed.

The Vance estate had undergone a complete transformation.

The broken glass had been replaced with reinforced ballistic panoramic windows, and the scars of the firefight were erased by construction crews working around the clock.

More importantly, the atmosphere had shifted.

Laughter echoed through the vast halls where fear and cold perfection had once reigned supreme.

Julian sat in his home study, reviewing the preliminary audit reports prepared by forensic accountants.

Elara sat on the plush sofa nearby, watching two-month-old Maya kick her tiny legs on an embroidered play mat.

"Julian, look at this," Elara said softly, holding up a photograph she had found inside Arthur Vance’s old private journals, retrieved from the unlocked bunker.

Julian walked over, kneeling beside the mat.

The photograph showed his father, Arthur, sitting on an old wooden dock holding an eight-year-old Julian, both of them grinning with fishing poles in hand.

Behind them stood a man Julian didn't recognize—tall, dark-haired, with piercing gray eyes, standing in the shadows of the marina boathouse.

"Who is that?" Elara asked, pointing at the stranger.

Julian furrowed his brow, squinting at the aged photograph.

"I don't know," Julian murmured. "I’ve never seen him before in my life."

Suddenly, Julian’s private encrypted phone rang on the mahogany desk.

It was a priority line that only three people possessed: Ross, Agent Reynolds, and Julian’s chief legal counsel.

Julian stood up, walking over to the desk and answering on speaker.

"Julian," Agent Reynolds’s voice sounded tight, stripped of its usual professional composure.

"Reynolds, what's going on?" Julian asked, sensing the immediate shift in tone.

"Victoria’s federal transfer was ambushed twenty minutes ago on Interstate 5," Reynolds said, the sound of blaring sirens audible in the background.

Julian went completely still.

"What do you mean, ambushed?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping into dangerous gravel.

"A convoy of heavy commercial flatbeds boxed in the armored transport near the mountain pass," Reynolds explained rapidly. "They used military-grade thermite charges to breach the rear doors. Victoria is gone, Julian."
