Chapter 8 - HEALING THE WOUNDS

Inside the warm, quiet sanctuary of the kitchen, the shattered pieces of porcelain had been swept away. The air no longer smelled of ozone and suppressed rage; it smelled of brewing chamomile tea and quiet, steady comfort.

Julian stood by the kitchen island, his shirtsleeves rolled up to his elbows, gently dabbing a warm, wet washcloth against the corner of Elara’s swollen lip. His movements were agonizingly careful, as if he were handling spun glass.

"Does that hurt?" he asked softly, his eyes filled with a deep, aching remorse.

"A little," Elara murmured, offering him a faint, reassuring smile. She reached up and placed her hand over his wrist, feeling the rapid, nervous pulse beneath his skin. "I'm okay, Julian. Really. The baby is kicking. She's strong."

Julian let out a long breath, resting his forehead gently against hers. The adrenaline had completely worn off, leaving behind the heavy, exhausting reality of what had just transpired.

"I should have protected you better," Julian whispered, his voice cracking slightly. "I knew how she was. I kept telling myself she would change, that distance would make her respect boundaries. I was a coward."

"You weren't a coward," Elara said, her thumb tracing the line of his jaw. "You were dealing with a mother. That's never simple. But you drew the line today. That's what matters."

She winced slightly as she shifted on the chair, the lingering ache in her lower back reminding her of the fall. Julian immediately noticed, his protective instincts flaring up all over again.

"Come on," he said, stepping back and holding out both of his hands. "We're going upstairs. You're not lifting another finger today. Not a single one."

Elara let out a soft laugh, taking his hands and allowing him to pull her gently to her feet. Together, walking with slow and careful steps, they left the grand, marble-floored kitchen behind them.

They walked up the sweeping staircase, away from the echoes of the past, moving toward the quiet, sunlit master bedroom that belonged solely to them. For the first time since they had moved into the estate, the house felt truly theirs.
