Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING

Outside the massive mahogany front doors, the rain began to fall in a cold, unforgiving drizzle. Beatrice sat in a crumpled heap on the wet concrete driveway, her knees scraped raw through the expensive wool of her suit.

Her breath came in ragged, furious gasps. She reached up with trembling, manicured fingers, trying to wipe the smeared mascara from her cheeks, but she only succeeded in staining her skin with black streaks.

"He threw me out," she whispered to the empty, rain-slicked courtyard. "My own son... threw me out."

She tried to push herself up, using the grand stone pillars of the entryway for support. Her ankle throbbed with a dull ache from the fall. The humiliation burned hotter and deeper than any physical pain she had ever experienced in her privileged, insulated life.

She reached into the pocket of her ruined jacket, her fingers frantically searching for her phone. The screen was cracked, spider-webbing across the glass, but the power button still flickered.

With a shaking hand, she tapped on the screen and dialed a number she had dialed a thousand times before. It rang four times before a smooth, corporate voice answered on the other end.

"Sterling Enterprises, legal department. How may I direct your call?"

"Put me through to Arthur Vance," Beatrice snarled, her voice venomous. "Tell him it’s Beatrice. Tell him I need him right now."

There was a brief pause, the sound of muffled typing, and then the line clicked. Arthur Vance, the family's longtime legal counsel, spoke with cautious professionalism.

"Mrs. Sterling. I heard you were at the residence. Is there a—"

"Listen to me very carefully, Arthur," Beatrice interrupted, her voice rising to a frantic, shrill pitch. "My son has lost his mind. He has physically assaulted me, stolen my home, and locked me out on the street. I want you to draw up the paperwork immediately. I want him arrested. I want every single asset frozen. Do you hear me?"

On the other end of the line, there was a long, heavy silence. Arthur didn't immediately jump to obey, a hesitation that Beatrice had never experienced in twenty years.

"Arthur?" she barked, stepping out into the cold rain. "Are you listening to me?"

"I hear you, Mrs. Sterling," Arthur said slowly, his voice dripping with an unexpected chill. "However, I must remind you of a few legal realities. Five years ago, when the company faced bankruptcy, Julian purchased the entire estate and absorbed all of your personal debts. The deed is in his name. The accounts are in his name. Legally, you are a guest in his home. You have been a guest for years."

"I am his mother!" Beatrice screamed, her voice cracking as a passing car sprayed cold water across her legs from the street. "That means nothing!"

"Legally, Mrs. Sterling, it means you have no claim to the property," Arthur replied flatly. "And regarding an assault charge... given the security cameras stationed at every corner of that estate, I strongly advise against calling the police. Unless, of course, you want the authorities to review the footage of you physically attacking a pregnant woman."

May you like

The phone slipped from Beatrice’s numb fingers. It hit the wet concrete, the battery popping out and skidding across the pavement.

She stood alone in the freezing rain, the heavy oak doors shut tight behind her, realizing for the first time in her life that her power had vanished completely.
