Chapter 25 - The Voice from the Grave

The voice on the satellite phone did not waver.

It carried the cold, razor-sharp cadence of a man who believed the world belonged to him by divine right.

Julian’s hand tightened around the receiver until his knuckles went stark white.

Behind him, Elara stood motionless in the moonlight, her hands resting instinctively over her pregnant belly.

"You're dead," Julian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, lethal whisper. "My father buried you thirty years ago."

A low, dry chuckle resonated through the small speaker, vibrating against Julian’s ear.

"Your father was a sentimental fool, Julian," Alexander Sterling murmured smoothly. "He thought a quiet exile in Geneva and an empty grave in Zurich would satisfy me."

Outside, the thundering rotor blades of the heavy unmarked gunships shook the floor-to-ceiling glass panels of the penthouse.

Twin searchlights slashed through the coastal fog, casting long, predatory shadows across the living room.

"You have five minutes to bring Elara and my future heir out to the lawn," Alexander said, his tone chillingly casual. "If you refuse, my strike team will reduce this estate to ash."

"You touch one hair on her head," Julian snarled, "and I won't just kill you. I will erase every trace of your existence from this earth."

"Five minutes, Julian," Alexander said softly. "The clock is already ticking."

The call cut off with a sharp click.

The line went dead, leaving only the deafening hum of the hovering aircraft outside.

Julian turned around instantly, dropping the useless handset onto the mahogany desk.

Elara’s eyes were wide, but there was no panic in her stance, only fierce maternal resolve.

"It's really him, isn't it?" she asked quietly. "Your father's twin."

"Yes," Julian said, closing the distance between them and pulling her tightly against his chest. "Alexander Sterling. The man who nearly destroyed this family before I was even born."

"What do we do?" she asked, looking up into his dark, focused eyes.

"We survive," Julian replied, brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "And then we bury him for good."

The tactical radio at Julian's hip crackled violently back to life.

"Julian! Perimeter breached at the north gate!" Ross shouted over heavy static and distant gunfire. "They’re using thermal imaging and high-caliber suppressors!"

"Fall back to the primary choke point," Julian ordered immediately into the radio. "Trigger the courtyard floodlights on manual battery."

"Manual override is locked out!" Ross yelled back. "They hijacked our entire electrical grid from the outside!"

"Then blow the sub-station," Julian commanded coldly. "Cut their visual advantage."

"Copy that!" Ross answered before the transmission cut out.

A sudden, concussive boom rattled the eastern wing of the mansion.

Plaster dust drifted down from the vaulted ceiling like pale snow.

Julian grabbed the tactical go-bag hidden beneath the floorboards of the study and slung it over his shoulder.

He pulled a customized semi-automatic handgun from the safe, checked the chamber, and handed a smaller concealed piece to Elara.

"Safety is off," Julian said, looking directly into her eyes. "Aim for center mass. Don't hesitate."

Elara took the weapon with steady hands, tucking it securely into the holster beneath her oversized cashmere sweater.

"I won't," she whispered.

Suddenly, the massive glass doors overlooking the terrace shattered inward in a blinding shower of crystal fragments.

Two figures dressed in matte-black combat armor dropped from the balcony overhang, assault rifles raised.

Julian didn't hesitate.

He raised his weapon, fired two clean, double-tap rounds through the chest plate of the first operative, and kicked the heavy mahogany desk forward.

The oak desk slammed violently into the second gunman, pinning him against the wall before he could acquire a target.

Julian closed the distance in a heartbeat, disarming the man with a vicious strike to the throat, followed by a heavy blow that sent him sprawling unconscious to the ground.

Elara caught her breath, stepping carefully around the shattered glass as alarm sirens suddenly began wailing from emergency independent units below.

"The lower tunnels," Julian said, grabbing her hand. "The wine cellar leads directly to the subterranean shoreline dock."

"Can the boat outrun those gunships?" Elara asked as they sprinted toward the hidden corridor behind the bookcase.

"It doesn't have to," Julian said grimly. "It just has to get us into the sea cave network before Alexander's missiles lock onto our thermal signatures."

As they reached the heavy steel vault door leading down into the darkness, a voice boomed from external megaphones mounted beneath the hovering helicopters.

"Julian Sterling! You cannot outrun your own blood!"

Julian punched the six-digit mechanical override code into the steel door, ignoring the chilling voice echoing through the ocean mist.

The heavy door creaked open, revealing the damp stone stairs descending into the black depths of the cliffside.

Julian pushed Elara gently inside, his eyes scanning the burning hallway behind them one last time.

"Move," Julian said, locking the heavy steel door behind them. "The hunt begins now."
