Chapter 24 - The Serpent's Shadow

Julian did not answer immediately.

His eyes drifted slowly from Elara's terrified face back down to the old photograph lying on the coffee table.

He picked up the faded print, staring intently at the mysterious, gray-eyed man standing in the shadows behind his father.

Julian turned the photograph over.

Faded handwriting in black fountain pen was scrawled across the back, hidden beneath a layer of yellowed adhesive tape that had peeled back with age.

Julian’s fingers peeled the remaining tape away.

Written in his late father’s unmistakable handwriting were five chilling words:

*Forgive me, Julian. Alexander lives.*

Before Julian could process the sentence, the entire estate plunged into total, pitch-black darkness.

The backup generators did not kick on.

The security alarms did not sound.

The home automation screens flickered once and died completely, severed at the master satellite uplink.

Outside, the calm Pacific breeze suddenly carried the distant, rhythmic thumping of heavy rotor blades approaching over the ocean cliffs.

Not federal helicopters.

Unmarked, blacked-out military aircraft flying below radar altitude, their searchlights cutting through the coastal fog like twin blades of ice.

Ross’s voice crackled frantically through Julian’s handheld tactical radio, static tearing through the speaker.

"Julian! Multiple bogies breaching the north perimeter!" Ross screamed over the roar of helicopter engines. "These aren't Victoria's mercenaries! They're flying the private insignia of the Sterling Syndicate!"

Julian looked at Elara, whose face was illuminated only by the faint silver moonlight spilling through the windows.

The phone on the desk, supposedly dead from the power outage, suddenly lit up with an incoming call from an unlisted international satellite number.

Julian reached out with a steady hand and pressed the button.

A deep, aristocratic voice—chillingly familiar, echoing the exact cadence of his late father—spoke into the darkness.

"Hello, Julian," the man on the phone purred smoothly. "Thank you for removing Victoria from my path. Now, bring my granddaughter outside... before I level that mountain to the sea."
