Chapter 23 - The Architect in the Shadows

Elara gasped, quickly picking Maya up off the mat and holding her close against her chest.

Julian felt a violent surge of adrenaline spike through his veins.

"How is that possible?" Julian roared into the phone. "You had three escort cruisers and tactical agents in the vehicle!"

"The shooters didn't leave a single shell casing," Reynolds said, his breath ragged. "They were professional commandos. They took out the tires with precision sniper fire from a ridge half a mile away."

"Who hired them?" Julian pressed, his mind racing. "Marcus is locked in solitary confinement. Victoria's accounts are frozen solid. She doesn't have the liquid capital to buy a tactical hit squad like that!"

"We searched the transport vehicle after the smoke cleared," Reynolds said, his voice dropping to an unsettling whisper. "They left something behind in her empty cell, Julian."

Julian gripped the edge of the mahogany desk until his knuckles turned white.

"What did they leave?"

"A sealed black envelope addressed directly to you," Reynolds answered. "We opened it with bomb disposal protocols. It was clean."

"What was inside?" Julian demanded.

"A single chess piece—a black queen," Reynolds said slowly. "And a handwritten note written on vintage Vance Global stationery."

Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird.

"Read the note, Reynolds."

Reynolds paused, taking a breath before reading the words through the speaker:

"'Victoria was never the architect, Julian. She was merely the guardian of a bloodline that does not belong to you. We are coming to collect our true heir.'"

Reynolds fell silent.

Julian stood paralyzed in the center of the sunlit study, the warm breeze from the terrace suddenly feeling like the breath of a predator.

Elara looked up at him, her eyes wide with terror as she clutched baby Maya.

"Julian," Elara whispered, her voice trembling. "What does that mean? Who is the true heir?"
