Chapter 20 - The Bloodline Trap

Julian clicked the heavy tactical flashlight on, its powerful white beam cutting through the impenetrable darkness of the master suite.
"Stay behind me, Elara," Julian ordered, his voice raw with suppressed adrenaline. "Lock the bedroom door the second I step out."
"Julian, don't leave us!" Elara pleaded, holding baby Maya tightly against her chest, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
"The generator room has a manual override," Julian said, his eyes scanning the pitch-black hallway through the open doorway. "Someone cut the main power lines. I have to secure the perimeter."
Before Julian could take two steps toward the corridor, the high-pitched shriek of the compound’s perimeter alarm tore through the house.
It wasn't an automatic sensor trip.
It was the manual override alarm from the central security station on the ground floor.
A heavy, metallic thud echoed from the bottom of the spiral staircase, followed by the slow, deliberate sound of high heels clicking against marble tiles.
Julian pushed Elara back into the deep walk-in closet behind the bed.
"Stay inside. Do not make a sound, no matter what you hear," Julian whispered, his thumb clicking the safety off his weapon.
He stepped back into the dark bedroom, raising the gun toward the doorway, his flashlight beam trained on the opening.
The clicking of the heels grew louder, unhurried, rhythmic, and terrifyingly calm.
A shadow stretched across the polished hardwood floor, distorted by the flickering lightning flashes from the terrace windows.
A slender, elegant figure stepped into the light beam, perfectly composed despite the raging storm outside.
It was Victoria Vance.
Her silver hair was damp from the rain, her designer coat soaked, but her eyes burned with a mad, unyielding fire that chilled Julian to the bone.
In her right hand, she wasn't holding a weapon.
She was holding a small, glowing electronic detonator with a flashing red LED light.
Julian kept his weapon leveled directly at his mother’s chest, his hands rock-steady despite the fury threatening to consume him.
"Take one more step, Victoria, and I swear to God I will end this right here," Julian warned, his voice low and lethal.
Victoria stopped in the center of the bedroom, letting out a soft, mocking laugh that echoed above the sound of thunder.
"You really think you've won, don't you, my foolish boy?" Victoria said, her voice dripping with venomous amusement.
"Marcus is in federal custody. Your accounts are seized. You are completely finished," Julian stated, refusing to lower the barrel.
Victoria tilted her head, her smile stretching into something grotesque and triumphant in the beam of his light.
"You think Marcus was my only play?" she whispered, her gaze drifting toward the closed closet doors behind him.
She slowly raised her left hand, revealing a heavy brass master key covered in fresh, dark crimson blood.
Julian’s stomach plummeted into an icy abyss as he recognized the key to the estate’s private underground bunker.
"Ross put up quite a fight at the gatehouse," Victoria said casually, wiping a drop of blood from the brass surface with her thumb.
From the darkened shadows behind the bedroom door, two heavily armed men clad in black tactical gear emerged, their assault rifles raised and aimed squarely at Julian’s heart.
Inside the closet, baby Maya let out a terrified, piercing scream.

Victoria’s eyes lit up with predatory hunger as she looked directly at the closet door.
"Hand over my granddaughter, Julian," Victoria commanded, her thumb resting on the red detonator button. "Or we all burn on this cliff together."
