Chapter 34 - The Final Ultimatum

The storm over the Big Sur coast had turned into a full-scale hurricane.
Gale-force winds whipped the towering redwoods, bending them like twigs against the charcoal sky.
Julian’s private combat transport helicopter descended through the violent downdrafts, its twin turboshaft engines roaring against the tempest.
Julian stood at the open side door, wearing heavy black tactical armor, his rifle strapped tightly across his chest.
Below them, the picturesque clifftop bunker was an inferno of shattered concrete, twisted steel, and billowing black smoke.
The outer blast walls had been completely obliterated by heavy military explosives.
"No thermal signatures on the perimeter!" the door gunner shouted over the headset. "The attackers have pulled back into the tree line!"
Julian didn't wait for the helicopter to touch the ground.
The moment the skids hovered ten feet above the muddy clearing, he jumped.
He landed in a roll through the wet gravel, coming up with his rifle raised, sweeping the smoking ruins.
"Ross! Perimeter security!" Julian barked into his helmet comms. "Cover the rear!"
Julian sprinted into the smoldering blast crater that had once been the bunker's entrance.
The stench of burned thermite, cordite, and copper filled the damp air.
Two of Marcus’s private guards lay dead near the collapsed archway, their tactical vests shredded by high-caliber rounds.
Julian pushed past the debris, his heart pounding in his throat like a sledgehammer.
"Marcus!" he called out, his voice echoing through the ruined concrete corridors.
A faint groan came from beneath a pile of shattered ceiling slabs.
Julian dropped his rifle and threw the heavy concrete blocks aside with frantic, superhuman strength.
Marcus lay trapped underneath, his face covered in blood, his chest rising and falling in shallow, painful gasps.
"Julian..." Marcus whispered, coughing up dark blood.
Julian knelt beside him, lifting his head. "Marcus! Where is she? Where is Elara?"
Marcus reached up with trembling, blood-soaked fingers, grabbing Julian’s tactical collar.
"I couldn't... stop them, Julian," Marcus choked out, tears mixing with the grime on his face. "They had a specialist... a breacher with an industrial plasma torch."
Julian’s breath stopped. The world seemed to freeze into absolute zero.
"Did they take her?" Julian whispered, his voice trembling with sheer terror. "Marcus, tell me they took her!"
"She fought them..." Marcus wheezed, his grip slipping from Julian’s collar. "She fired every round in her weapon. She hit their commander... but there were too many."
Julian turned his head toward the inner vault.
The massive four-inch titanium door was blown completely off its heavy hinges, hanging by a thread of melted steel.
Julian stood up slowly, stepping into the dark, ruined sanctuary.
The room was empty.
On the concrete floor lay Elara’s silver hourglass pendant, crushed under the heel of a combat boot.
Beside the pendant, painted on the gray concrete wall in fresh, scarlet blood, was the ancient Latin motto of the Sterling Syndicate:
*SANGUIS OMNIA VINCIT.*
(Blood Conquers All.)
A sudden mechanical click sounded from the corner of the destroyed room.
A battered satellite speaker unit, left intentionally on the metal table, hummed to life.
Julian stepped toward it, his eyes dead, his soul burning into pure, unadulterated ash.
He picked up the small receiver.
A voice spoke through the speaker—not Alexander’s arrogant purr, but the harsh, raspy voice of a professional mercenary commander.
"Julian Sterling," the man said over the sound of ocean waves and roaring boat engines. "Your uncle is currently in our custody aboard our offshore submarine. And your wife is sitting right beside him."
Julian closed his eyes, his knuckles turning white around the radio.
"If you want to see your pregnant wife draw another breath," the commander continued coldly, "you will bring the master cipher keys to the Sterling global treasury to the coordinates we are transmitting right now."
Julian took a deep, shuddering breath, the demon inside him awakening fully from its slumber.
"What coordinates?" Julian whispered, his tone so terrifyingly calm that the static on the line seemed to freeze.
"The coordinates of the deep ocean trench where your father tried to drown Alexander thirty years ago," the man replied. "You have six hours. Come alone in an unarmed vessel. If we see a single radar blip from your military fleet... we will cut the child from her womb and drop them both into the abyss."
The transmission cut out with a deafening screech.
Julian stood in the center of the smoking ruins, the crushed silver hourglass resting in his bleeding palm.
Behind him, Ross ran into the vault, stopping dead in his tracks as he saw the blood-painted words on the wall.
"Julian..." Ross breathed, his voice trembling with dread. "What did they say?"
Julian did not answer immediately.
He slowly pocketed the crushed pendant, turned around, and looked at Ross with eyes that were no longer human.
May you like
They were the eyes of a monster who had just been given permission to burn the entire world to the ground.
"Get the combat submersible ready," Julian said softly. "We are going hunting in the dark."
