Chapter 17 - The Shattered Sanctuary

A violent shudder ripped through the concrete foundation beneath their feet.
The detonation didn't destroy the bedroom, but deep within the estate's lower levels, a secondary explosion compromised the structural beams.
The entire east wing tilted slightly, plaster raining down from the high ceiling like a sudden snowfall.
Julian threw his weight forward, wrestling the dazed operative to the ground and striking him across the jaw with the butt of his pistol.
The guard went limp, his weapon clattering across the slick floorboards.
Across the room, Ross raised his sidearm, but Victoria’s remaining guard opened fire on full auto.
Rounds chewed through the heavy oak doorframe, driving Ross back toward the rain-swept terrace.
Victoria scrambled backward toward the hallway, clutching the brass key against her chest.
"You won't leave this mountain alive, Julian!" Victoria screamed as the corridor lights flickered and died, leaving only the crimson emergency strobes.
She vanished into the darkness of the main hallway, her boots pounding against the marble.
Julian rushed back to Elara, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and checking Maya with frantic hands.
The baby was crying loudly, terrified by the deafening noise, but unharmed.
"Are you hurt?" Julian demanded, searching Elara’s face in the strobing red emergency light.
"I’m okay. Maya is okay," Elara gasped, clutching the infant against her ribs. "Julian, she's heading for the underground bunker."
Ross stumbled back into the room, leaning heavily against the wall, clutching his fractured ribs.
"She rigged the lower service corridors with shaped charges, sir," Ross coughed, spitting a mouthful of blood. "She's trying to seal herself inside the subterranean vault before federal agents breach the outer gates."
"Where are the authorities?" Julian asked, picking up the fallen operative's tactical radio.
"Stuck on the access road," Ross wheezed. "Victoria dropped an electric utility tower across the private bridge. They're cutting through it now."
Julian looked at Elara, whose jaw was set in iron determination.
"She has an escape tunnel leading from the vault down to the private marina at the base of the cliffs," Julian said, piecing together his family's long-buried architectural secrets.
"There's a speedboat docked in the sea cave," Ross confirmed with a grim nod. "If she reaches that water, she's gone."
"She isn't leaving," Elara whispered, meeting Julian’s eyes. "Not after what she did. End this, Julian."
Julian checked his magazine, slamming it back into the receiver with a sharp, metallic snap.
"Stay with Ross in the reinforced panic room behind the kitchen," Julian commanded softly, kissing Elara's forehead.

Elara grabbed his wrist, her grip remarkably powerful.
"Bring her down," Elara said. "Don't let our daughter grow up looking over her shoulder."
