Chapter 15 - The Edge of the Abyss

Julian did not lower the barrel of his handgun.
The cold metal felt fused to his skin as rain battered the shattered glass of the sanctuary terrace.
Behind him, inside the reinforced cedar closet, Maya let out another ragged sob against Elara’s chest.
Victoria took one slow, deliberate step forward, her expensive Italian leather heels clicking against the hardwood floor.
"You look tense, Julian," Victoria whispered, her lips curling into a cruel, manic smile. "Is that any way to greet your own mother?"
"You stopped being my mother the night you tried to slaughter my family," Julian replied, his voice dangerously level.
The red LED light on the detonator in Victoria’s palm pulsed like an artificial heartbeat.
The two masked operatives flanking her remained completely motionless, their tactical assault rifles aimed directly at the center of Julian’s chest.
Julian knew the ballistic math.
Even if he pulled the trigger and ended Victoria in an instant, the mercenaries would tear him apart before his casing hit the ground.
And behind him, Elara and his newborn daughter were trapped in an enclosed space with zero cover.
"Let them walk, Victoria," Julian said, his jaw tightening until the muscle throbbed. "You want the company. You want the Vance empire. Take it."
Victoria threw her head back and laughed, a shrill, piercing sound that cut through the thunder.
"The company?" she hissed, her eyes widening with feverish intensity. "Marcus signed those pathetic surrender documents because he has no spine. But I built Vance Global from your father's ashes."
She raised the bloody brass bunker key, letting the crimson droplets glisten in the pale hallway light.
"Your board of directors thinks they stripped my shares," Victoria continued, stepping closer. "They don't know about the Zurich vault beneath this foundation."
"There is nothing in that vault that can save you from a federal penitentiary," Julian countered, calculating the distance between himself and the nearest gunman.
"That vault holds the irrevocable bloodline trust," Victoria sneered softly. "A trust that transfers five billion dollars in untraceable bearer bonds to whoever holds legal custody of the sole Vance grandchild."
Julian’s blood turned to ice water.
"You never cared about Maya," Julian growled, fury vibrating through every syllable. "She's just a signature to you."
"She is my retirement, Julian," Victoria stated flatly. "And she is my rebirth."
From inside the closet, the heavy door suddenly clicked open two inches.
Julian's heart stopped.
"Julian," Elara's voice came out steady, stripped of all tears, cold as steel.

Victoria’s gaze snapped toward the cracked closet door, her thumb twitching over the detonator switch.
"Come out, little peasant girl," Victoria purred, raising her voice. "Bring me my granddaughter, or watch your husband die on this rug."
