Chapter 9 - THE NEW DAWN

The morning sun broke through the tall bedroom windows, casting long, golden shafts of light across the hardwood floor. Elara woke up slowly, wrapped in the warmth of the heavy duvet.
For a moment, she lay completely still, listening to the absolute quiet of the house. No sharp heels clicking against the marble downstairs. No shrill voice demanding attention or criticizing her every breath. Just the soft, steady sound of Julian breathing softly beside her, one of his arms still protectively draped across her growing belly.
She turned her head on the pillow, looking at his face. Even in sleep, the lines of stress that had permanently etched themselves across his forehead over the last few years seemed slightly softer, as if a massive weight had finally been lifted from his shoulders.
Elara slipped quietly out of bed, careful not to wake him. She pulled a soft, oversized cashmere sweater over her shoulders and walked over to the tall arched window, looking down at the front courtyard below.
The driveway was completely empty. The security guard stationed by the gates confirmed that Beatrice had eventually called a taxi late last night, slinking away into the night once she realized no one was coming to rescue her from her own making.
She was gone. The toxic shadow that had hung over their marriage, dictating their schedules, poisoning their meals, and draining their peace, was finally cleared away.
A gentle knock sounded at the bedroom door before it slowly creaked open. Julian stood in the doorway, wearing a pair of soft lounge pants, holding a tray with two steaming mugs of coffee and a plate of fresh fruit.
"You're awake," Julian said, a soft, tired smile touching the corners of his mouth. "How are you feeling this morning?"
"I feel lighter," Elara said honestly, turning from the window to meet him halfway across the room. "Like I can actually breathe in this house for the first time."
Julian set the tray down on a small side table and wrapped his arms around her, pulling her gently against his chest. He rested his chin on the top of her head, closing his eyes as he inhaled the scent of her hair.

"We're going to change everything," Julian promised quietly. "We're going to remodel this entire house. We'll tear out that cold marble in the kitchen and put in warm wood. We'll paint the walls. We'll make it a real home for our daughter."
Elara smiled, leaning back to look up into his eyes, feeling the profound truth of his words vibrating between them. "I'd like that," she whispered. "I'd like that very much."
