Chapter 9 - The Baby in the Photograph

“HOW COULD A BABY BE WEARING MY PENDANT THREE YEARS BEFORE I WAS BORN?”
Maria's voice shook as she stood inside the chapel, clutching her phone.
On the other end, Sofia Santos was crying in her rehabilitation room.
The wooden box Isabella had given her contained a photograph that should not have existed.
A baby.
A familiar silver pendant.
And a date that contradicted everything Maria knew about her own life.
Alexander gently touched Maria's shoulder.
“Ask Sofia to send a photograph of both sides.”
Maria nodded.
“Sofia, sweetheart, can you take pictures?”
“Yes.”
“Send them to me. Then stay with the nurses until the police arrive.”
Sofia hesitated.
“Maria, are we in danger?”
Maria swallowed.
“I don't know. But you're not alone. I'm going to make sure you're safe.”
She ended the call.
Seconds later, two images appeared on her screen.
The first showed Isabella Santos standing beside a small wooden crib.
She looked younger than Maria remembered, but her face was unmistakable.
In her arms was a baby wrapped in a white blanket.
Around the child's neck hung a tiny silver chain with a five-petaled flower.
Maria stared.
The second photograph showed the handwritten date.
Three years before her recorded birth.
Alexander studied the image.
“Could the date be wrong?”
Maria shook her head.
“Maybe. But Sofia says Mom kept it hidden.”
Elena stepped closer.
The moment she saw the photograph, her face drained of color.
“Where did she get that?”
Maria turned.
“You recognize it?”
Elena stepped backward.
“Isabella promised she'd destroy that picture.”
Alexander's expression hardened.
“Why?”
Elena looked toward the altar.
“Because it proves something Richard Sterling wanted erased.”
Maria felt anger rising.
“Then tell me!”
Elena closed her eyes.
“Your mother had another child.”
Maria froze.
“What?”
“Before you and Sofia.”
The chapel fell silent.
Maria stared at her aunt.
“A brother? A sister?”
Elena shook her head.
“I never learned what happened to the baby.”
Maria looked back at the photograph.
The child had dark hair and delicate features.
The face was too young to identify.
But the pendant was unmistakable.
“Why would Mom give me the same necklace?”
Elena swallowed.
“Because Isabella believed it would help someone recognize the truth when the time came.”
Alexander frowned.
“Recognize what?”
Elena looked toward the photograph.
“That the child had been taken.”
Maria's stomach tightened.
“Taken by whom?”
“Richard Sterling's people.”
Detective Bennett stepped forward.
“That's a serious allegation.”
Elena turned toward her.
“Then investigate it.”
Bennett studied the photograph.
“Do you have a birth certificate?”
“No.”
“Hospital records?”
“They were altered.”
Bennett nodded slowly.
“We'll need to verify the original records.”
Maria stared at Elena.
“Was the baby my brother or sister?”
Elena's voice broke.
“A girl.”
Maria felt tears gathering.
She had grown up believing her family consisted of her mother, the man who raised her, and Sofia.
Now she was learning that another child might have been taken before she was born.
A child whose existence had been hidden.
A child who might still be alive.
Alexander gently guided Maria toward a pew.
“Sit down.”
She shook her head.
“I can't.”
“Maria.”
“No. Every time I ask a question, someone tells me another piece of my life was a lie.”
Alexander looked at her with quiet sympathy.
He understood.
His own father had been declared dead for twenty-two years.
His mother had hidden secrets to protect him.
And the woman he nearly married had apparently been part of a scheme to steal his family's legacy.
Their lives had been manipulated by people who treated families like pieces on a chessboard.
Maria looked toward Elena.
“Did my mother love that baby?”
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
“More than anything.”
“Then why did she let them take her?”
Elena shook her head.
“She didn't.”
Maria froze.
Elena continued.
“She fought. She begged. She threatened to expose everyone involved.”
“What happened?”
Elena stared at the floor.
“They told her the child had died.”
Maria covered her mouth.
The same cruel lie that had been used to explain Isabella's own disappearance.
Alexander turned toward Detective Bennett.
“We need every birth and adoption record connected to Isabella Santos.”
Bennett nodded.
“I'll request them through the proper channels.”
Marcus's radio crackled.
“Sir, security at the rehabilitation center confirms police have arrived. Sofia is safe.”
Maria exhaled.
“Thank God.”
But Marcus wasn't finished.
“The man who entered Sofia's room was captured on hallway surveillance.”
Alexander turned.
“Send the image.”
Marcus opened his tablet.
A grainy photograph appeared.
The man wore a dark jacket and carried a black leather bag.
His face was partially obscured by a baseball cap.
But the angle revealed a distinctive scar running along his jaw.
Elena gasped.
Alexander looked at her.
“You know him?”
Elena nodded slowly.
“Peter Lawson.”
Marcus stared.
“The missing maintenance technician?”
Elena looked terrified.
“He used another name when I knew him.”
Maria stepped closer.
“What name?”
Elena swallowed.
“David Cross.”
Alexander frowned.
“Who is David Cross?”
Elena looked toward the chapel's rear door.
“Richard Sterling's fixer.”
Bennett immediately ordered officers to search for him.
Alexander's expression hardened.
“Peter Lawson has been working inside my house for three years. If he's connected to Richard, he could have been gathering information the entire time.”
Marcus nodded.
“We're reviewing every access log.”
Maria stared at the photograph.
“Why would he go after Sofia?”
Elena looked toward the pendant.
“Because the box contained proof of the missing child.”
Maria's voice trembled.
“Who is she?”
Elena shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Alexander looked toward the altar.
“Maybe the original records can tell us.”
Bennett nodded.
“The evidence technicians are almost here.”
The chapel grew quiet.
Then Maria noticed something.
The woman in the photograph was holding the baby close to her chest.
But behind Isabella stood another person.
Only part of the figure was visible.
A man's hand rested on Isabella's shoulder.
On his finger was a large ring.
Maria enlarged the image.
Her heart pounded.
The ring looked familiar.
A heavy gold signet ring engraved with a lion.
Alexander stared.
“That's my father's ring.”
Maria looked up.
“Thomas Vance?”
Alexander nodded.
“He wore it for years.”
Elena's expression changed.
Maria turned toward her.
“Why was Thomas standing beside my mother when she held that baby?”
Elena didn't answer.
Alexander looked at her.
“Elena.”
She closed her eyes.
Maria stepped closer.
“Tell me.”
Elena whispered:
“Because Thomas was there when the child was born.”
Maria froze.
Alexander stared.
“What?”
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
“And because he knew exactly who the child's father was.”
Maria could barely breathe.
“WHO?”
Elena slowly opened her eyes.
Then she looked directly at Alexander.
“YOUR FATHER.”
The chapel fell silent.
Alexander stared at her.
Maria's hand flew to her mouth.
May you like
And for the first time, both understood that the missing child might connect their families by blood.
