Chapter 10 - The Secret Daughter of the Vance Empire

“ARE YOU SAYING MY FATHER HAD A CHILD WITH MARIA'S MOTHER?”
Alexander's voice echoed through the chapel.
Elena Santos stood motionless beneath the stained-glass window.
Maria stared at her aunt, struggling to breathe.
Thomas Vance.
The billionaire patriarch whose portrait hung above Alexander's fireplace.
The man who had supposedly died twenty-two years earlier.
The man whose voice had called Alexander only hours ago.
And now Elena was claiming he had fathered a child with Isabella Santos.
Alexander stepped forward.
“Answer me.”
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
Maria covered her mouth.
“No…”
Elena continued.
“Before Thomas disappeared, he and Isabella had a relationship. It was brief, complicated, and hidden from almost everyone.”
Alexander looked stunned.
“My father was married to Evelyn.”
“I know.”
“Then why would he—”
“Because people make mistakes, Alexander. Even the people we love.”
Maria shook her head.
“But my mother never told me.”
Elena looked toward her niece.
“She was ashamed of the secrecy, but she loved her daughter. She never stopped searching for her after the child disappeared.”
Alexander turned away.
For a moment, he stared at the wooden cross above the altar.
His father had taught him about loyalty.
About responsibility.
About protecting family.
And now Alexander was being forced to confront the possibility that Thomas had hidden a daughter from his wife and son.
But there was something more important than his anger.
A child had been taken.
And someone had spent decades hiding her existence.
Alexander turned back.
“Where is she now?”
Elena shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Maria stepped closer.
“What's her name?”
Elena hesitated.
“Isabella named her Grace.”
Maria whispered the name.
“Grace.”
She imagined a little girl growing up somewhere in the world, perhaps never knowing her real parents.
Perhaps believing she had been abandoned.
Perhaps searching for answers just as Maria was now.
“Was she adopted?” Maria asked.
Elena nodded.
“Richard Sterling arranged for the child to be placed with another family. Isabella was told she had died, but later discovered the death certificate was false.”
Alexander's jaw tightened.
“Why would Richard take her?”
Elena looked toward the diamond ring.
“Because Grace was Thomas Vance's biological daughter.”
Alexander frowned.
“And?”
“Because Thomas had created provisions in the blue trust for all of his biological children.”
The room went silent.
Maria stared.
“You mean Grace had a claim to the trust?”
Elena nodded.
“Potentially. Depending on the original documents and whether they were legally valid.”
Alexander slowly looked toward the altar.
The ring.
The pendant.
The hidden records.
The missing child.
Suddenly, the conspiracy seemed less like ordinary theft.
It looked like an attempt to control the Vance family's inheritance.
Maria stepped toward Alexander.
“Does this mean Grace is your sister?”
Alexander looked at her.
“If Elena is telling the truth, yes.”
Maria's eyes filled with tears.
“And she would be my sister through our mother.”
Alexander nodded slowly.
“We would share a half-sister.”
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Maria asked the question that had been haunting her.
“Does this mean you're my brother too?”
Alexander shook his head gently.
“Not based on what we've learned. Grace would be connected to both of us, but through different parents.”
Maria nodded.
The distinction mattered.
In a world where almost every family record had been manipulated, she needed at least one truth she could understand.
Detective Bennett approached.
“We need to establish what can be verified. Elena's account is important, but we'll need original records and independent DNA testing before treating any parentage claim as fact.”
Alexander nodded.
“Agreed.”
Marcus's radio crackled.
“Mr. Vance, the forensic team is ready to examine the altar.”
Alexander turned.
“Proceed.”
The technicians carefully photographed the metal plate.
Then one of them examined the recesses.
“The mechanism appears to be an older mechanical authentication system,” he explained. “It may open a compartment, but we need to confirm there are no modifications.”
Alexander handed over the diamond ring after it was documented.
Maria reluctantly removed her pendant.
The technician examined both objects.
Then looked up.
“The shapes appear compatible.”
Maria's heart pounded.
“Can you open it?”
“We can attempt to, once the scene is cleared and the mechanism is assessed.”
Bennett ordered everyone except the technicians to move toward the rear pews.
Several tense minutes passed.
Then a quiet metallic click echoed through the chapel.
A narrow compartment opened beneath the altar.
Inside was a sealed metal container.
Alexander stepped forward.
“Is that it?”
The technician nodded.
“We'll preserve the container and document the opening.”
Bennett watched closely as the lid was lifted.
Inside were several folders, a small ledger, and a bundle of photographs wrapped in protective material.
One folder bore the words:
VANCE FAMILY BLUE TRUST — ORIGINAL BENEFICIARY RECORDS.
Alexander stared.
“That's what my father wanted us to find.”
Bennett carefully opened the folder.
She scanned the first page.
Then stopped.
Her expression changed.
“What is it?” Alexander asked.
Bennett looked toward Elena.
“These documents identify several beneficiaries.”
Maria stepped closer.
“Is Grace listed?”
Bennett nodded.
“Yes.”
Maria felt tears gathering.
Alexander leaned forward.
“Then we have proof she existed.”
“Evidence,” Bennett corrected gently. “We'll still need to authenticate it.”
She turned another page.
Then froze.
Alexander noticed.
“What?”
Bennett looked up.
“There are two additional names.”
Maria frowned.
“Who?”
The detective hesitated.
“Maria Santos.”
Maria stopped breathing.
Alexander stared.
“And Sofia Santos.”
The chapel fell silent.
Maria shook her head.
“That doesn't make sense. My mother never told us about a trust.”
Elena lowered her eyes.
Alexander studied the document.
“Why would Thomas include Maria and Sofia?”
Bennett examined the language.
“It appears Isabella was designated as a custodian for certain assets, with contingent provisions for her daughters.”
Maria stared at the paper.
“Daughters?”
Bennett nodded.
“According to this document, all three girls were included in the protective arrangement.”
Maria's eyes filled with tears.
Grace.
Maria.
Sofia.
Three daughters connected to the same secret.
But only two had grown up together.
Alexander turned toward Elena.
“Did Isabella know?”
Elena nodded.
“She wanted to protect all of them.”
Maria's voice trembled.
“Then why didn't she come home?”
Elena began crying.
“Because she believed Richard Sterling would kill you if she did.”
Suddenly, Marcus's phone vibrated.
He glanced at the screen.
His expression darkened.
“Sir.”
Alexander turned.
“What?”
“Victoria Sterling has contacted the press.”
Alexander frowned.
“About what?”
Marcus hesitated.
“She claims you kidnapped her father.”
Alexander stared.
“That's absurd.”
Marcus continued.
“She's also released a statement accusing Maria of stealing valuable family property.”
Maria felt cold.
“The pendant.”
Marcus nodded.
Alexander's expression hardened.
“Get our attorneys involved. Preserve the surveillance footage and every message she sent.”
Bennett looked toward Marcus.
“Has Richard Sterling been located?”
“Not yet.”
The detective nodded.
“Then we need to find him before he destroys more evidence.”
Maria stared at the beneficiary records.
Somewhere, Grace might still be alive.
Somewhere, Isabella might be waiting.
And Richard Sterling was still moving pieces around them.
Then a technician opened the final envelope inside the metal container.
A single photograph slipped onto the table.
Alexander leaned closer.
It showed a young girl standing outside a large white mansion.
She appeared to be about seven years old.
Her dark hair fell across her shoulders.
Around her neck hung a small silver pendant.
Maria's heart pounded.
“Grace?”
Elena gasped.
Alexander looked at the back of the photograph.
A name had been written in black ink.
GRACE VANCE — AGE SEVEN.
Beneath it was another line.
CURRENT IDENTITY: VICTORIA STERLING.
Alexander went completely still.
Maria stared at the photograph.
“No…”
Elena covered her mouth.
Detective Bennett immediately took the image for examination.
Alexander slowly looked toward the chapel doors.
Victoria.
The woman he had nearly married.
The woman who had humiliated his mother.
The woman who had threatened Maria.
Could she possibly be the missing child?
Or had someone deliberately placed her name in the records to manipulate the investigation?
Alexander's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A familiar female voice spoke.
“Hello, darling.”
Alexander's blood ran cold.
“Victoria.”
She laughed softly.
“I hear you've finally found the chapel.”
Alexander gripped the phone.
“What do you know about Grace Vance?”
Silence.
Then Victoria whispered:
“MORE THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE.”
Alexander stared at the photograph.
“Are you Grace?”
Victoria laughed again.
Then her voice turned cold.
“Ask Maria what happened to her mother. And ask your father why he kept my real name hidden.”
Alexander's heart pounded.
“Where are you?”
Victoria ignored the question.
“Tell Maria I have something she wants.”
Maria stepped closer.
“What?”
Victoria's next words made the entire chapel fall silent.
“ISABELLA SANTOS IS WITH ME.”
Maria grabbed the phone.
“LET ME SPEAK TO HER!”
A faint voice sounded in the background.
“Maria?”
Maria stopped breathing.
She knew that voice.
Older.
Weaker.
But unmistakable.
“Mom?”
The woman began crying.
“My baby…”
Maria's knees buckled.
Alexander caught her.
Then Victoria returned to the line.
“If you want your mother alive, bring the ring, the pendant, and the original trust records to the Sterling estate tomorrow night.”
Alexander's expression turned cold.
“And if we refuse?”
Victoria paused.
Then whispered:
“THEN MARIA WILL LOSE HER MOTHER FOR THE SECOND TIME.”
The line went dead.
Maria stared at the phone.
Tears streamed down her face.
Alexander looked toward Detective Bennett.
“We have a location.”
Bennett nodded.
“And now we have a possible hostage situation.”
Alexander slowly closed his fist.
For twenty-two years, his family had lived under the shadow of a lie.
For seventeen years, Maria had mourned a mother who might still be alive.
And the woman who had started everything with a cruel gesture in the ballroom was now holding the answers.
But as Bennett examined the recovered photograph more closely, she noticed something nobody else had seen.
The handwriting identifying Victoria as Grace was not old.
It had been added recently.
And beneath the fresh ink, faint impressions revealed a different name.
The detective held the photograph beneath a forensic light.
Her expression changed.
“Alexander,” she whispered, “you need to see this.”
He turned.
“What?”
Bennett pointed toward the original writing.
“The name beneath Victoria Sterling isn't Grace Vance.”
Maria stepped closer.
“Then who is it?”
The detective looked up.
Her face had gone pale.
May you like
“IT'S SOFIA SANTOS.”
