Chapter 33 - THE MOTHER WHO HIRED HER REAL SON UNDER A FALSE NAME“MY MOTHER KNEW.”

Alexander stared at Michael Ward’s employment record.

There was no anger in his voice anymore.

That frightened Maria more than shouting would have.

Marcus checked the authorization again.

“There’s no mistake. Evelyn approved the security clearance personally.”

Alexander called the estate.

Evelyn answered by video from her medical suite.

The moment she saw Michael’s photograph on Alexander’s screen, her face collapsed.

“Mother.”

Evelyn began crying.

Alexander held up the photograph.

“Who is this?”

She looked away.

“LOOK AT ME.”

Evelyn flinched.

Maria gently touched Alexander’s arm.

He lowered his voice.

“Please.”

Evelyn stared at the photograph.

Then whispered one word.

“My… son.”

Alexander closed his eyes.

The answer hurt even though he expected it.

“You knew.”

Evelyn nodded.

“For how long?”

“Three… years.”

Alexander stared.

“You found your biological son three years ago.”

“Yes.”

“And you brought him into my company.”

“Yes.”

“But you never told me.”

Evelyn began sobbing.

Alexander stepped away from the screen.

Marcus took over.

“Mrs. Vance, why was Michael hired?”

Evelyn struggled to speak.

“He… contacted… me.”

Alexander turned.

“He knew who he was?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.”

That stopped everyone.

Maria moved closer.

“Then why did he contact you?”

Evelyn swallowed.

“He had… memories.”

Alexander understood.

Just like him.

Fragments.

Images without names.

A house.

A mother.

A childhood stolen and replaced.

Evelyn continued.

“He remembered… the estate.”

Alexander’s eyes filled with tears.

“He came home.”

Evelyn nodded.

“He stood… outside gate.”

Her voice broke.

“I recognized him.”

Alexander looked away.

For twenty-two years, Evelyn had raised him as her son.

Then one day the child she had actually given birth to had returned.

And she had hidden him again.

“Why didn’t you tell him?”

Evelyn cried harder.

“Edward.”

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“What did Edward threaten?”

Evelyn looked directly at Alexander.

“You.”

Alexander froze.

“He told me… if Michael learned truth… you would die.”

Maria felt cold.

Edward had controlled every generation through the same weapon.

Fear.

Alexander returned to the screen.

“Where is Michael now?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“Gone.”

“When?”

“Two years.”

“Why?”

“He discovered… something.”

“What?”

Evelyn whispered:

“Your file.”

Alexander’s breathing stopped.

Michael Ward had entered Vance Global without knowing he was the original Alexander.

Then somewhere inside the company, he had found records belonging to the man using his identity.

Marcus opened archived security reports.

“There was an incident.”

Alexander looked over.

“What incident?”

“Three years ago, Michael accessed the executive records floor after midnight.”

“Was he arrested?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Marcus looked toward Evelyn.

“Your mother intervened.”

Alexander laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

The report showed that Michael had copied one file before leaving.

Alexander’s childhood medical records.

Bennett leaned forward.

“He must have realized the records matched his memories.”

Gabriel whispered, “Then Edward found him.”

Marcus searched deeper.

Michael resigned seven days later.

No forwarding address.

No employment history for eighteen months.

Then a new record appeared.

He had joined a nonprofit organization.

THE SECOND NAME FOUNDATION.

Maria frowned.

“What is that?”

Bennett searched.

“A support organization for adults who experienced childhood identity fraud, illegal adoption, or falsified records.”

Alexander stared at the name.

“He built a life around finding people like himself.”

Marcus nodded.

Then a recent photograph appeared.

Michael stood beside a group of young adults.

Behind him was a banner:

YOUR NAME IS YOURS.

Alexander could not look away.

He had spent his life building skyscrapers.

Michael had spent his rebuilding identities.

Maria watched Alexander’s face.

“You need to meet him.”

Alexander shook his head.

“What do I say?”

“The truth.”

“What truth?”

He turned toward her.

“That I lived in his house? Called his mother Mom? Inherited his name?”

Maria stepped closer.

“That neither of you chose what happened.”

Alexander looked at the photograph again.

Bennett’s phone rang.

She answered.

“This is Bennett.”

Her expression changed.

“Where?”

Everyone watched her.

“When?”

She ended the call.

“Michael Ward entered Manhattan forty minutes ago.”

Alexander froze.

“Where is he?”

Bennett hesitated.

“Vance Estate.”

Evelyn gasped on the video.

Alexander grabbed his coat.

They drove back immediately.

The rain had stopped by the time they reached the estate.

Security officers surrounded the front courtyard.

A black motorcycle stood near the steps.

Alexander entered the mansion.

The ballroom was empty now.

No champagne.

No orchestra.

No three hundred guests.

Only silence.

The place where Maria’s slap had started everything now felt like a cathedral after a war.

A man stood beneath the chandelier.

Michael Ward.

He turned.

Alexander stopped.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

They were the same age.

One carried the Vance name.

The other carried Vance blood.

Michael’s eyes moved across Alexander’s face.

“So.”

His voice was calm.

“You’re him.”

Alexander swallowed.

“Yes.”

Michael looked toward Maria.

“You’re Maria Santos.”

She nodded.

“How do you know me?”

Michael’s expression softened.

“Isabella told me.”

Maria stopped breathing.

“You know my mother?”

“Yes.”

“Where is she?”

Michael looked toward Alexander.

“That depends.”

Alexander’s jaw tightened.

“On what?”

“Whether you’re willing to hear why she disappeared.”

Maria stepped forward.

“I’ve spent seventeen years waiting.”

Michael nodded.

“Then you deserve the truth.”

Alexander stared at him.

“Why did you come here?”

Michael looked toward the staircase.

“Because Evelyn asked me to.”

Alexander’s expression hardened.

“She contacted you?”

“Yesterday.”

Michael removed a small recording device.

“She told me Edward was coming back.”

Marcus stepped closer.

“What’s on that?”

Michael looked at Alexander.

“Your first memory.”

Alexander frowned.

“What?”

Michael pressed PLAY.

A child’s frightened voice filled the ballroom.

“Where’s my mommy?”

Alexander froze.

He knew that voice.

Not because it sounded familiar.

Because it was his.

Another voice answered.

Isabella Santos.

“You’re safe. I promise.”

The boy cried.

“My name is…”

Static swallowed the next words.

Alexander rushed toward Michael.

“What did I say?”

Michael looked at him.

“The original recording is damaged.”

“Then why bring it?”

“Because Isabella made another copy.”

Maria’s heart pounded.

“Where?”

Michael looked toward the ballroom entrance.

“Someone else has it.”

A woman stepped from the shadows.

Older.

Thinner.

Her dark hair streaked with gray.

Maria stopped breathing.

The world disappeared around her.

The woman’s eyes filled with tears.

“My baby.”

Maria whispered:

“Mom?”

Isabella Santos opened her arms.

Maria ran.

Seventeen years of grief shattered in one embrace.

She buried her face against her mother’s shoulder and screamed.

Not from fear.

Not from anger.

From the unbearable pain of finally touching someone she had mourned for half her life.

Isabella held her.

“I’m sorry.”

Maria sobbed.

“You left us.”

“I know.”

“You left me with Sofia.”

“I know.”

“I needed you.”

Isabella cried harder.

“I know.”

Across the ballroom, Alexander looked away.

Then Isabella slowly released Maria.

She turned toward him.

Her expression changed.

“Alexander.”

He stared.

“You know who I am.”

“Yes.”

“My real name.”

Isabella closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Alexander stepped closer.

“Tell me.”

Maria turned toward her mother.

Isabella trembled.

Michael watched silently.

Finally Isabella whispered:

“Your name was never Alexander.”

“I know.”

“Your mother gave you another name.”

Alexander’s heart hammered.

“What was it?”

Isabella opened her eyes.

“ETHAN.”

Alexander stopped breathing.

Then she added:

“ETHAN SANTOS.”

Maria stared at her mother.

The surname hit harder than the first name.

“Santos?”

Isabella began crying again.

Maria whispered:

“Mom… why did he have our name?”

Isabella looked from Maria to Alexander.

And answered:

May you like

“BECAUSE BEFORE YOU EVER MET HIM, HE WAS ALREADY PART OF OUR FAMILY.”
