Chapter 4 - The Billionaire's Father Was Never Buried

“ARE YOU TELLING ME MY FATHER IS STILL ALIVE?”
Alexander stood beside Evelyn's hospital bed, his hands trembling with an anger he could barely control.

The room felt suddenly too small.

For twenty-two years, he had lived with the memory of his father's funeral.

He remembered the rain.

The black umbrellas.

The enormous mahogany coffin carried into the family mausoleum.

He remembered standing beside his mother, a frightened thirteen-year-old boy who couldn't understand why the strongest man he knew had disappeared forever.

Now everything he believed was beginning to collapse.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Alexander…”

“Please, Mother. Tell me the truth.”

Maria stood near the window, watching the elderly woman's face.

She had never seen Alexander like this.

In the ballroom, he had appeared untouchable.

During the confrontation with Victoria, his anger had been cold and controlled.

But now he looked like a son who had been waiting decades for an answer.

Evelyn slowly reached toward him.

“Your father… discovered something.”

Alexander knelt.

“What?”

“Money… hidden accounts… people he trusted.”

Alexander frowned.

“Financial fraud?”

Evelyn nodded weakly.

“He wanted… to expose them.”

Maria moved closer.

“Did someone threaten him?”

Evelyn looked at her.

“Yes.”

Alexander's voice trembled.

“Who?”

Evelyn hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Richard Sterling.”

Maria's stomach tightened.

Victoria's father.

The man whose family had nearly joined the Vance dynasty through marriage.

Alexander stood.

“Richard Sterling knew my father?”

Evelyn nodded.

“They were business partners.”

Alexander stared.

He knew Richard Sterling had worked with Vance Global in recent years.

But he had never heard that Sterling had been connected to his father before the supposed accident.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Evelyn began crying.

“Because… they threatened you.”

Alexander went still.

“Me?”

“You were… a child.”

The words hung between them.

Maria felt tears rising in her eyes.

Evelyn had spent twenty-two years carrying a secret while watching her son grow into one of the most powerful men in America.

And despite his wealth, she had still believed he was in danger.

Alexander gently took her hand.

“Mother, nobody is going to hurt you for telling the truth.”

Evelyn looked toward Maria.

Then she whispered:

“Thomas… planned… to disappear.”

Alexander froze.

“What?”

“He said… it was temporary.”

“Then why didn't he come back?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Alexander stared at the floor.

His father hadn't simply vanished.

He had planned to disappear.

But something had gone wrong.

And someone had made certain the world believed he was dead.

Marcus entered quietly.

“Sir, we located Peter Lawson's vehicle.”

Alexander turned.

“Where?”

“Abandoned near a private airfield outside the city.”

“Any sign of him?”

“No. But we recovered a security badge and several documents.”

Marcus placed a folder on the table.

Inside were copies of old financial records.

At the top of one page appeared the words:

VANCE FAMILY BLUE TRUST — RESTRICTED ACCESS.

Alexander stared.

“This trust isn't listed in our current corporate records.”

Marcus nodded.

“That's what concerns us.”

The documents referred to a separate family-controlled reserve established decades earlier.

Unlike the publicly reported assets of Vance Global, the blue trust appeared to hold ownership interests and records connected to several international companies.

Maria looked toward the diamond ring.

“Is that why Victoria wanted to marry you?”

Alexander considered the possibility.

“The ring may be connected to the trust's authentication process.”

Marcus opened another file.

“We're having the documents examined by independent counsel. We don't know yet which provisions remain valid.”

Alexander nodded.

“Keep everything preserved.”

Then he turned toward Maria.

“You should go home and rest.”

Maria stared at him.

“Your mother is frightened. Someone is threatening your family. And you think I'm going to leave her alone?”

Alexander's expression softened.

“You've already done more than anyone could ask.”

Maria shook her head.

“Mrs. Vance treated me like a person when I was invisible to everyone else. I'm not abandoning her now.”

Evelyn smiled faintly.

Alexander looked at Maria for several seconds.

Then he said quietly:

“Thank you.”

Later that evening, the estate grew silent.

Most guests had left.

Victoria's belongings were being removed from the private wing.

Security officers patrolled the grounds.

Maria sat beside Evelyn, reading from an old novel.

Alexander stood in his father's former study.

The room had remained almost unchanged since Thomas Vance disappeared.

Dark wooden bookshelves covered the walls.

A massive desk stood beneath an oil portrait of the family patriarch.

Alexander approached the portrait.

His father looked exactly as he remembered him.

Strong.

Confident.

Smiling faintly.

Alexander whispered:

“Where did you go?”

He opened the desk drawers.

Most contained ordinary documents.

But inside the lowest drawer, he discovered a small brass key taped beneath the wooden frame.

Attached to it was a faded label.

FOR ALEXANDER — WHEN HE IS READY.

His heart pounded.

He examined the key.

It appeared old.

The metal was scratched, and the label had yellowed with age.

Alexander searched the room.

Then he noticed a narrow cabinet beside the fireplace.

Its lock matched the key.

He inserted it.

The cabinet opened.

Inside was a small wooden box.

Alexander lifted the lid.

There were photographs.

A leather notebook.

And a sealed envelope addressed in his father's handwriting.

He opened it.

The first sentence made his hands tremble.

My son, if you are reading this, it means someone has finally told you that my death was not what it seemed.

Alexander sank into the chair.

He continued reading.

I discovered that men I trusted were using our family businesses to conceal criminal transactions. I intended to bring the evidence to the authorities, but I learned that the people involved had access to our home and knew your daily routine.

Alexander swallowed.

The letter continued.

I arranged a disappearance to protect you and your mother while the investigation proceeded. But I fear someone has discovered the plan. If I cannot return, remember that the blue trust contains records that must never fall into the wrong hands.

Alexander's eyes burned.

At the bottom of the page was a final warning.

Do not trust anyone who claims to act in my name without proof.

Alexander slowly lowered the letter.

A sound came from the doorway.

He looked up.

Maria stood there.

“Alexander?”

He held out the letter.

“My father wrote this.”

Maria approached.

She read the first lines.

Then looked at him.

“He knew he might never come home.”

Alexander nodded.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then the telephone on the desk rang.

Alexander stared at it.

The old landline had not been used in years.

He answered.

“Hello?”

A man's voice spoke.

“Alexander.”

Alexander froze.

The voice was older.

Rougher.

But unmistakably familiar.

“Who is this?”

The man breathed slowly.

“You found my letter.”

Alexander's heart slammed against his ribs.

“Father?”

Silence.

Then the man replied:

May you like

“YES, SON. AND IF YOU WANT TO KEEP MARIA ALIVE, YOU MUST LISTEN VERY CAREFULLY.”
